Summer School - Representation
XIXe école de printemps en histoire de l’art
La dix-neuvième école de printemps du réseau international de formation à l’histoire de l’art est organisée par l’université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne du 21 au 25 juin 2021. Elle réunira (si les conditions le permettent) dans la ville et ses environs une cinquantaine d’étudiantes et d’étudiants, d’enseignantes et d’enseignants pour une semaine de formation à la recherche internationale autour du thème de l’art et de l’alimentation. Elle accueillera deux sessions de la dix-huitième école (« Art and Text ») qui aurait dû avoir lieu à Cambridge en mai 2020. Selon l’évolution de la situation sanitaire, une hybridation numérique maintiendrait le caractère pleinement international de cette édition.

Virtuosities. The ethics and aesthetics of manual skills from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
Le présent colloque vise à provoquer la rencontre et le dialogue de différentes approches du geste technique, à partir d’une catégorie de gestes que l’on nomme virtuoses. On entend par là l’attitude qui consiste à imposer indiscrètement à l’attention l’acte de produire ; la virtuosité étant considérée comme la primauté accordée à une métatechnique. Outre une analyse des concepts et références à l’œuvre dans les usages du terme « virtuosité », sur la longue durée, le colloque reviendra sur la pratique du « chef-d’œuvre » comme démonstration obligée de la virtuosité, sur les enjeux sociaux d’un tel geste, dans ses modalités de réception ou comme marqueur de distinction, sur le rôle du modèle musical ainsi que sur les formes de l’écriture et de la réécriture de la virtuosité : manuels techniques, citations, copies, emprunts. Une attention particulière sera accordée à l’approche matérielle des objets et des savoir-faire à partir de plusieurs études de cas.

This call for paper asks the question of what it means to inhabit : to inhabit a space, a territory, one’s home or one’s body, whether we are dealing with far away frontiers, or the outlines of intimacy ; to inhabit one’s life, one’s society/ies, one’s epoch, in what inhabiting means in terms of being present in one’s world, for and with one another, to face circumstances as they stand. In a time when, across the globe, entire populations are confined to their homes, Perspective issues an invitation to revisit the visual and imaginary plasticity of inhabiting : “to occupy a place of settled residence or habitat,” so states the dictionary, suggesting habit, repetition, regularity ; but also occupying persons, inhabiting them, animating them, moving them.

Le colloque interdisciplinaire et international « Mise en scène des territoires et stratégie de marques : essor et pratique innovante » a pour objectif d’amener à une connaissance plus fine et plus approfondie des représentations des territoires et des marques territoriales, de leur articulation, de leur fonctionnement. Il s’agit également de mieux comprendre leur utilisation par les parties-prenantes, publiques ou privées, à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur du territoire, qui les mobilisent sciemment ou non dans le cadre d’une production touristique, artistique ou même politique ; et ainsi de faire émerger des pratiques innovantes autour des trois axes suivants : les stratégies de marques, un enjeu politique et économique ; les stratégies de marques, un enjeu politique et économique ; le territoire, un outil créatif.

Poetics, Politics and the Ruin in Cinema and Theatre since 1945
References to Ancient times have been made in Europe between the two World Wars and the Classical served the idea of “a return to order” considered by some as necessary after the heresies of the avant-gardes. Indeed, the Classical has been manipulated by Fascist and Nazi ideologies in orchestrating the Second World War and the Holocaust. This conference intends to study how artistic processes as well as works of theatre and cinema record the historical and artistic consequences of this trauma in Europe by reinventing Antiquity, in particular, by working with ruins both politically and poetically. While this research is initially rooted in classical reception and theatre and cinema studies, the conference intends to dialogue with other fields including archaeology, aesthetic philosophy, political sciences, anthropology, and media theory.

BOA publica artículos originales e inéditos en los que se expongan avances y resultados de investigaciones sobre la historia del arte, los estudios visuales y las artes comparadas. La revista está dirigida a profesionales, investigadores, docentes, becarios y estudiantes de posgrado y se edita en español, inglés, francés y portugués.

In a series of articles from the early 1900s, American Architect and Buildings News, Architectural Record, and The Artist introduced their readers to a recent development in Europe: the emergence of a “so-called ‘new art’” – Art Nouveau – in design, its products ranging from buildings to decorative objects. Though the origins, formal characteristics, and future direction of the "new art" were ambiguous, it represented a deliberate effort to break with historicist conventions in design. The periodicals described developments overseas which did not generally affect North American practice. Historicism, whether in the form of the Beaux-Arts, the Colonial Revival or other revivals, and the Arts and Crafts remained dominant in upper-class interiors. The purpose of this session is to examine exceptions to these general trends – commissions, clients, decorators, artists, architects, networks and exchanges with the contemporary European developments or traditions outside Europe, with areas of influence outside the prevalent sources of design.

The aesthetics and politics of the archive in art

Ce numéro portera sur les enjeux politiques de l’archive dans le monde de la création artistique. Nous nous intéresserons au rôle de l’artiste tant dans la création d’archives (réelles ou fictives) que dans leur réactivation et leur transmission. L’affectivité qui peut insuffler ou s’injecter dans ses pratiques pourra être mise en discussion, de même qu’il s’agira de nous interroger sur les processus artistiques par lesquels l’archive peut révéler sa dimension politique. Le regard de l’artiste porté sur les images convoquées dialectise une histoire du regard où les manières de percevoir les images deviennent critiques. La question de l’artification de l’archive se pose alors et les conditions comme les perspectives offertes par celle-ci pourront être interrogées. Il sera aussi possible de poser un regard épistémologique sur le sujet en réfléchissant à la place du document d’archive dans les corpus des chercheur·ses en art.

Contributions of articles for electronic journal Verbum et Lingua
The electronic magazine Verbum et Lingua: Didáctica, lengua y cultura will dedicate its 16th edition (July-December 2020) to the topic of Chican@s studies. Grosso modo, for Ornelas, Ramírez and Padilla (1975), the Chican@s studies have made a great effort to integrate four main constructs: race, class, culture and gender/sexuality. These constructs are present in the work of different artists who express their ideology in order to politicize and lead their community(ies) to change. According to Macias (2018), the Chican@s field of study seeks to make research holistic and multidisciplinary, as well as inclusive, comparative, grounded, up-to-date and critical. At the same time, it seeks to apply the results to social justice, education, as well as to the change of the global Chican@ communities.

Après 35 ans d’absence des congrès de l’Association internationale de la couleur, la France accueillera le XVIe colloque international de l’AIC organisé par le Centre français de la couleur. Le développement de l’économie numérique à l’échelle mondiale conduit à replacer la couleur dans d’autres dimensions « virtuelles » et surtout à associer différentes disciplines telles que l’histoire, l’art et l’architecture, vidéo, impression 2D et 3D, informatique graphique, imagerie numérique, etc. Couleurs des milieux naturels, couleurs et lumières du ciel, couleurs extraites des matières de l’environnement, couleurs végétales, minérales, animales, etc. dialoguent et rencontrent les couleurs numériques sous toutes leurs formes : Atlas, nuanciers, diagrammes CIE, espaces colorimétriques, réalité virtuelle et augmentée, analyse et synthèse d’image, patrimoine reconstruit et restauration, écrans et visualisation, photographie et vidéo, création artistique, design de formes et de matières, langages, etc.

Art Markets : An Integrated Perspective 2020
International Summer School - Antwerp-Brussels July 6-10, 2020
Inspired by the success of the first Art Markets Summer School held in Lyon in June 2019, a second edition of this unique research, training and networking experience will take place in July 2020 in Belgium. A team of international experts from relevant fields such art history, economics, sociology, finance and digital humanities will engage with participants with an academic or professional interest in the global art market. An exciting program combining lectures, workshops and field trips will familiarize the participants with the nature and structure of the art market system. Attention will be given to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the various actors in the art market and the available methodological tools to study this fascinating yet complex phenomenon. This immersive experience will inspire and shape new interdisciplinary thinking about the emergence, history and dynamics of art markets around the world.

Le prochain numéro de Perspective: actualité en histoire de l’art sera consacré aux transferts culturels entre le Portugal et les pays lusophones (Angola, Brésil, Cap-Vert, Guinée-Bissau, Guinée équatoriale, Macao, Mozambique, Sao Tomé-et-Principe, Timor oriental). Il s’agit, dans ce numéro, de reconsidérer de manière critique les discours de l’histoire de l’art ancrés dans la perspective de l’État-nation, en examinant l’étendue et les spécificités du territoire en tant que constructions culturelles et historiques. Se détournant ainsi des approches endogènes ou essentialistes, nous proposons d’envisager le sujet au-delà des stéréotypes, tels que la mythologie des grandes découvertes et le luso-tropicalisme, les représentations identitaires, la dichotomie entre beaux-arts et arts populaires ou encore la division entre centre et périphérie.

We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

Art and the book between 15th and 18th centuries for a transdisciplinary approach
Quand image et objet-livre interagissent, cela intéresse tout autant l'histoire du livre que l'histoire de l’art et d’autres disciplines telles que les littéraires, chacune travaillant avec ses propres méthodes. Les relations entre les deux types de discours que sont l’écrit et le visuel, verbal and non verbal texts, et les voies relevant de la problématique du ut pictura poesis et des modes de transposition du texte en image et inversement ont déjà fait l'objet d'études fournies. C'est donc une nouvelle approche que nous souhaitons développer grâce aux regards croisés des spécialistes venus d'horizon divers, au profit d’un dialogue méthodologique et d’une recherche épistémologique questionnant la polysémie de l’objet-livre et se demandant comment différents champs disciplinaires étudient un même objet, suivant quelles modalités et dans quelles perspectives. Le champ d’analyse est vaste. Pour cette raison, nous avons choisi de le circonscrire au livre imprimé et à l’image ante-industrielle.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 Public History Summer School that was to be held in Wrocław, Poland, is moved to being online-only event and will take place as previously planned, June 1-5. The workshops and sessions will be organised with the use of new technologies.
