History of measuring and calculations in archaeology
In archaeology, quantitative approaches have a long tradition and belong to the very core of the discipline. However, the history of quantitative archaeological reasoning might be not as straight forward as suggested by the disciplinary history commonlys hared among archaeologists. Taken into account different social interests and traditions we doubt the narrative of linear methodological and technical progress, especially considering to a certain extent alternative developments of quantitative approaches inblocks of countries somewhat separated by language barriers. Different communities assign different roles and functions to quantitative procedures applied in archaeology. This session aims to explore the multitude of factors that determine the development ofquantitative archaeology.

La revue Histoire, médecine et santé lance un appel à contributions pour un dossier thématique portant sur les données médicales. Le big data s’est aujourd’hui imposé dans le champ de la santé : les données en grand nombre sont mobilisées dans la recherche biomédicale, pour diagnostiquer la maladie ou bien envisager un traitement. Nous aimerions que ce numéro thématique questionne la notion de données médicales dans un temps long, en partant du principe qu’elles constituent tous les éléments mobilisés par les soignant·e·s et les chercheurs·euses pour appréhender l’état de santé des individus et leurs éventuelles pathologies. Il s’agit notamment de réfléchir aux mécanismes de pouvoir sur les corps produits par un regard médical fondé sur l’élaboration de données sérielles et d’investiguer la manière dont elle façonne les savoirs médicaux et la définition même des pathologies.

Searching for places, places of knowledge
Identifying and indexing research grounds in scientific texts
This day focuses on the challenges, methods and research questions associated with the recognition of geographical entities in the texts of scientific publications. The first session looks back at land-related research. Overgrazed lands, remote science, visibility of research sites and the local dimension of some sites will be discussed. The second session will present the methodologies for automatically detecting research fields in scientific texts. The third session will show the interest of these methods and the challenge of applying them to large corpora of scientific texts, taking the example of the ISTEX and OpenEdition corpora. The fourth session will present projects proposing interactive keyword and toponym exploration solutions for archaeology and geography journals.

The entrepreneurs of knowledge. From Paul Otlet to the new digital utopias
Imaginé au XIXe siècle, le projet de Paul Otlet et Henri La Fontaine visait à rassembler et classer tous les savoirs du monde. L’année 2019 marque à la fois le 75e anniversaire de la mort de Paul Otlet et le 30e anniversaire de la création du web. L’Institut national des sciences et techniques de la documentation (INTD) du CNAM fêtera en 2020 son 70e anniversaire. La matinée de cette journée d'études sera consacrée à un volet historique sur la mise en perspective des projets d’Otlet avec des interventions belges et françaises. L’après-midi s’attachera à projeter l’œuvre d’Otlet dans la société numérique avec une session sur la gestion contemporaine des savoirs au sein de communautés scientifiques et une table ronde sur le thème « Savoirs, pouvoir, politique », en résonnance avec le projet pacifiste de Paul Otlet.

The aim of the conference is to structure a conversation on both the fundamental and practical issues on legal data mining and machine learning between scientists and professionals from artificial Intelligence, data science, law, and logic. The Legal Data Mining, Machine Learning and Visualization conference will explore the specific technical challenges from data mining and machine learning technique addressing together practical and legal theoretical issues. It is an opportunity for computer scientists to showcase and explore in conversation with lawyers further developments in AI and data-mining applied to the legal domains. Legal academics specializing in the interface of law and AI are given the opportunity to articulate the challenges of automated functions in law including in natural language processing applied to law, information extraction from legal databases and texts and data mining applied for legal analytics.

Les recherches émanant du Web de données conduisent aujourd'hui à penser que l’indexation des productions scientifiques et leurs (inter)connexions sémantiques pourraient permettre d’interagir au-delà des frontières disciplinaires. Mais pour ce faire, il est essentiel de déterminer quels pourraient être ces « connecteurs interdisciplinaires », en tant que supports de coordination et d’intégration des savoirs et des pratiques. Cette question a fait l’objet de travaux fondateurs dans le dernier quart du XXe siècle, au moment de l’essor des grands projets de recherche interdisciplinaire et inter-acteurs ; récemment, elle a donné lieu à la configuration d’un domaine de recherche informatique à part entière, l’alignement d’ontologies. Au jour de ces expériences et au-delà, quels systèmes d’interrelations construire, avec quelles méthodologies ? Comment co-construire avec les sciences du numérique des systèmes de modélisation, voire d’automatisation ? Selon quelles limites ?

Ce colloque a pour vocation d’explorer le « travail des données » (mesure, quantification, évaluation, etc.), ses évolutions à l’ère de l’informatique connectée et ses effets potentiels dans les différents champs de l’espace social (éducation, santé, travail, consommations, relations, etc.). Il s’agira également d’interroger les conséquences méthodologiques et épistémologiques de cette « culture de la mesure » pour les sciences sociales, notamment en matière de recueil, de traitement, de mobilisation et d’analyse des données.

Dans le cadre de son séminaire scientifique, le Laboratoire Innovation formes architecture milieux (LIFAM), unité de recherche de l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Montpellier (ENSAM), organise une journée sur les thématiques du programme de recherche HUman at home projecT (HUT) auquel le LIFAM est associé en tant que membre du consortium. La « maison intelligente », l’espace architectural « connecté », l’« habiter », « augmenté », qui font actuellement l’objet d’une expérimentation « grandeur nature » au sein de l’appartement observatoire du projet HUT, nourrissent de nombreux espoirs, tout autant qu’ils alimentent de nombreuses angoisses. Rêve d’un lieu de vie qui obéirait au doigt et à l’œil (et à la parole) de son habitant, ou nouvelle aliénation, nouvelles addictions aux objets connectés ? L’Internet of things (IOT) connecte-t-il les personnes aux marques afin que les marques répondent aux besoins des personnes, ou pour que les personnes se plient aux besoins des marques ? Nouvelles libertés ou Big Brother 3.0 ?

La banque d’enquêtes qualitatives en sciences sociales (beQuali) est un outil à vocation nationale développé au sein du Centre de données socio-politiques (CDSP). beQuali propose, sous réserve d’autorisation, un accès à des matériaux d’enquêtes de sciences sociales menées à partir de méthodes qualitatives (observations, entretiens, focus groups, etc.) et à une documentation restituant le contexte de leur production. beQuali lance du 1er juin au 18 septembre 2016 un appel à propositions d'enquêtes, ouvert aux chercheurs, aux professionnels de l'information scientifique et technique et aux institutions ayant produit ou conservant des enquêtes qualitatives en sciences sociales. Il vise à recueillir des propositions d'enquêtes en vue de leur dépôt sur beQuali.fr.

Research, pedagogic sessions and tools for controversy mapping
FORCCAST Summer School 2015
In 2014, we started the FORCCAST summer school with a provocative question: “What is a good controversy?”. We began by lining up case studies selected by participants which were then discussed by participants in small groups. We would like to continue this exercise by inviting scholars working on controversies to present their case study and situate the notion of “controversies” in relation to more established and used social sciences concepts. It is not unfair to detect a somewhat casual use of “controversies” as an analytical resource. Against this trend, we encourage scholars to present research that falls within this area, and also to refine the coarse nature of the very term “controversy”. Over the years, we will build a repository of case studies that should help all of us to analyze the diversity behind the use of the term “controversies”, to identify some patterns, and hopefully to build a common typology.

Can we identify barriers which currently prevent Digital Humanities from developing their full potential, leaving little room for iteration, comparison or failure? The conference itself is conceived as an experimental set-up with labs, data experiments and round tables.

This conference follows up the Future of Historical Network Research (HNR) Conference 2013 and aims to bring together scholars from all historical disciplines, sociologists, other social scientists, geographers and computer scientists to discuss the emerging field of historical Social Network Analysis. The concepts and methods of social network analysis in historical research are no longer merely used as metaphors but are increasingly applied in practice. With the increasing availability of both structured and unstructured digital data, we should be able to analyze complex phenomena. Historical SNA can help us to cope with the organization of this information and the reduction of complexity.
