Anthropologie des religions : perspectives francophones internationales
Cette série de six conférences en ligne a pour but de faire connaître des recherches récentes et en cours menées dans une perspective d'anthropologie des religions dans la recherche francophone de plusieurs pays (Canada, France, Suisse, Cameroun) dans des contextes internationaux variés (Inde, Europe, Liban, etc.).

Gnwt (Genout) est une revue annuelle publiée au mois de septembre. Elle est éditée par le Réseau des enseignants-chercheurs en égyptologie et civilisations d’Afrique noire (RECECAN). Elle publie les articles des domaines des langues, des lettres, des sciences de l’homme et de la société, qui portent de préférence sur l’histoire ancienne de l’Afrique noire. Une rubrique varia peut cependant être consacrée à la diffusion des articles inédits en rapport avec d’autres périodes de l’histoire africaine. Tous ces savoirs doivent néanmoins avoir pour grille de lecture et fil conducteur les sources essentiellement endogènes de première main pouvant contribuer à une meilleure lecture et compréhension du passé séculaire de l’Afrique noire.

Secular religiosities and the secular sacred
Ce colloque traite des métamorphoses du religieux et du sacré en contexte laïque, notamment à partir de la notion de « religion séculière » développée par Éric Voegelin et Raymond Aron, mais aussi de « religiosité séculière » forgée par Albert Piette. Pourquoi naissent ou semblent progresser, de nos jours, les religiosités séculières ? Par quels mécanismes se diffusent-elles et à quels besoins répondent-elles ? Faut-il y voir la preuve que l’homme continue d’être un « homo religiosus », et par conséquent insister sur un continuum ; ou doit-on plutôt envisager de manière disruptive la sécularité qui les sous-tend et qui semble dénaturer quelque peu le champ religieux tel qu’il se déploya pendant près de deux millénaires ?

Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)
The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

Thinking with José Casanova. Deprivatisation of the clergy
French Association for the Social Sciences of Religions
José Casanova (Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, Université de Georgetown, USA) a contribué à renouveler l’étude des religions dans la sphère publique et dans les relations internationales. Théoricien de la déprivatisation (deprivatization) du religieux, il est un des chercheurs les plus importants et les plus reconnus pour penser le « retour des religions ». Nous entendons mettre en place sur toute une journée un dialogue direct et approfondi avec lui dans le cadre d’un format original : une masterclass. Le présent appel invite donc chercheuses et chercheurs souhaitant mener une discussion avec son œuvre à proposer une intervention. L’enjeu est d’ouvrir le champ de la discussion sur son œuvre, sur les axes centraux de sa pensée (déprivatisation et transnationalisation du religieux), mais toute contribution sur un autre aspect de son oeuvre (politisation, désaffiliation, interreligieux, laïcité...) ou à partir de terrains nouveaux est bienvenue.

Fidèle à sa mission fédératrice, l’université de la Manouba annonce l’organisation de la VIIIe édition de son symposium scientifique, un événement phare au cours duquel elle invite annuellement les chercheurs de tout horizon à adopter une approche réflexive et à croiser les regards disciplinaires autour du système des catégories modales que l’on utilise pour distinguer les différents rapports de la pensée aux choses et au monde. Après la transversalité, le territoire, les représentations, le temps, l'ordre, les normes et le genre, trois catégories sont proposées pour la réflexion pluridisciplinaire de 2020 : le réel, le virtuel et l’imaginaire.

New Comparative Mythology, a peer-reviewed journal of comparative mythology with an international editorial board, issues, for its fifth volume, a call for papers on the topic “conception, birth and childhood”. In many mythologies, these three initial phases of the existence of divine, heroic, monstrous and other figures have given rise to many traditions. In addition, various beliefs and practices, which are lent legendary or mythical precedents, also rhythm this period which goes from the fertilization to the edge of the initiatory phase of the individuals. It is on the comparative study of this vast field of research that the articles submitted to our review will have to relate.

Transcultural perspectives and the anthropology of the Imagination
Notre proposition est d'explorer diverses traditions et situations actuelles pour rendre compte de cette fascination pour l’Imaginal et son caractère opératoire que nous constatons dans les sociétés initiatiques d’hier et d’aujourd’hui dans les arts, les romans (cf. le gothique, la fantasy, le fantastique, l’utopie, diverses quêtes, les arts plastiques, l’Art total,les créations numériques, Il s’agira d’étudier les « images conteuses » (Bachelard) et autres « lieux conteurs », ces ponts suprêmes situés « entre un hic et nunc prosaïque et un illudtempus mythique » (Carmigiani), en fait, un véritable inter-monde.

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages
Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

The techno-realities are seen as a threat to human relationships in “real” life, in particular when they relate to love. Such human-shaped products however multiply: domotic spouse, tactile screen’s boyfriend, holographic companion, bride for Virtual Reality glasses, interactive downloadable partner, otome games and bishôjo games characters... The purpose of this symposium is to analyze Love Simulation Devices as signals allowing users to express a variety of messages, even contradictory ones, yet to be deciphered within their specific contexts. Working on the Japanese products will provide a revealing insight of processes that still have not been analyzed and may serve as an eye-opener in the field of comparative studies in the western cultures.

Creating images and rituals - otherness
Cette journée d’études, organisée par le Centre d'études et de recherche en histoire culturelle (Cerhic-EA 2616), traitera de l’histoire complexe du rapport ambigü à l’altérité, à travers la question des images et des liens que celles-ci entretiennent avec des rituels. Les approches développées par des historiens et historiens d’art (avec la présence de conservateurs de musées) pour la période XVIe-XXe siècle traiteront de questions politiques, culturelles et religieuses, envisageront la diversité des types d’images (qui sont aussi des objets) ainsi que la pluralité des pratiques qu’elles révèlent, qui les rendent agissantes ou qu’elles visent à produire.

Percussion instruments have a renewal of interest for a few years, after being a long time poor relatives of academic research and very often relegated to the end of the catalogues of musical instruments. However, recent studies show the complexity of uses of these items which, beyond their only sonorous mechanism, are mobilized in a wide range of contexts (ceremonies, theater, funerary field, votive offerings, etc.) for numerous reasons. Special attention will be paid to idiophones, but also to membranophones when data allows it.

CéSor doctoral students seminar
Cette année, le séminaire des doctorants du CéSor sera l'occasion d'instaurer une discussion active entre doctorants et chercheurs et invités du laboratoire. Le but de ce séminaire sera de réfléchir ensemble sur plusieurs auteurs de référence en sciences sociales des religions, mais aussi de plusieurs thèmes de recherches transversaux à l’ensemble de nos travaux, reflétant ladiversité des doctorants de notre laboratoire et des thématiques liées au « fait religieux ». Dans cette optique, nous avons retenu comme principal auteurr Michel Foucault. Chaque deuxième séance sera un espace ouvert consacré à des questionnements relatifs aux itinéraires et pratiques de la recherche. Ce sera une occasion pour nous de tisser des liens entre doctorants et jeunes chercheurs du laboratoire, mais aussi de débattre des « politiques de terrain(s) » de chacun et d’échanger autour de nos difficultés rencontrées lors de la rédaction d’articles, de chapitres de thèse en cours, etc.

40th congress of the Société de mythologie française
Le XLe congrès annuel de la Société de mythologie française, organisé à Pontgibaud près de Clermont-Ferrand, du 31 août au 4 septembre 2017, se propose de réfléchir à la notion « d’espaces mythiques » et à la façon dont les techniques d’orientation les ont définis ou permettront de les définir. En effet, les récits mythiques mettent en évidence, de façon souvent explicite, la forme géométrique du territoire, mais aussi l’assignation de communautés humaines à des emplacements tels que le Nord ou le Midi, l’Ouest ou l’Est. Décrypter l’origine, la transmission et l’évolution des notions de « géographie sacrée » et « d’espaces mythiques » sera l’un des enjeux du congrès.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.
