Policing port cities during the colonial era : Tianjin and Shanghai interaction between Western and Oriental police forces, 1860-1945

Limits of the western police model in China

In the past 20 years, the Research Center on Shanghai History (ECNU) and the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) have established close cooperative relations : joint projects, joint publications, joints conferences, as well as the co-training of graduate students have become significant and regular markers of increasingly close relationships. On this basis we hope to further co-promote Shanghai and Tianjin as centers of new urban history and social order. This project will avail new archival materials (municipalities archives), memoirs of policemen, photography, illustrated journals, correspondances, police reports etc…

Building a history of public health

Le séminaire se consacre à la construction de la santé publique du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle dans une perspective historienne. Il prend pour objet les processus politiques – de la police médicale à l’hygiène publique et à la gouvernance sanitaire contemporaine – et les dynamiques sociales à l’œuvre dans l’élaboration d’un ensemble de savoirs, de pratiques, d’institutions et de dispositifs de santé publique. Il s’intéresse à l’élaboration des catégories d’analyse qui en rendent compte et aux débats historiographiques qui en relèvent.

“Medicalized” Childbirth as a Public Problem

Risk Culture(s), Gender Politics, Techno-Reflexivities

Obstetrical knowledge, technologies and practices have dramatically transformed women’s reproductive experiences worldwide. Medicalization of childbirth was accelerated in the XX^th century by the displacement of childbirth from home to the hospital, and by the generalization of surgical techniques and pharmaceutical products. Medical interventionism took multiple, situated forms. Relying on cross-cultural investigations and field data from diverse national contexts (France, USA, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada…), this international workshop investigates how “technological” birth came into being, and how it is produced, problematized, framed, and negotiated in the XXI^st century.

This doctoral workshop will explore to what extent the notion of “mobility” in current cultural and social theory (eg. Stephen Greenblatt, John Urry) can be fruitfully applied in historical research. Mobilities can be seen as cross-border movements of persons, objects, texts and ideas.

Worker's environments in the 20th century

Between work environment and lived environment: what common ground for environmental history and the history of work?

Au cours de la dernière décennie, l'histoire environnementale a connu un fort développement dans les universités francophones, et l'histoire du travail connaît actuellement un profond renouvellement. Pourtant, peu de travaux lient encore ces deux champs historiographiques. Cette journée vise donc à rassembler des jeunes chercheurs, dont les travaux entendent contribuer à nourrir une réflexion historique sur les liens entre travail et environnement. Elle sera l'occasion de faire un bilan historiographique des travaux récents et des recherches en cours, afin d'esquisser des interrogations communes pour les recherches à venir.

The European beaver (Castor fiber). The history of an animal and its protection

L'objectif de cette journée d'étude est de remettre en perspective historique la protection du castor d'Europe en explorant, par une démarche relevant de l'histoire environnementale, les interactions entre l'animal et les sociétés humaines, en croisant les approches zoologiste, technicienne et historiennes.
