Rouge d'abords! Plural readings
A multidisciplinary conference and exhibition examining the symbolism of the colour red across disciplines in the past and present
Le projet « Rouge : études diachroniques » (RED) ambitionne de documenter l’attachement à la couleur rouge dans les productions symboliques du passé à l’actuel. Le projet vise à rassembler différents spécialistes autour de cette question et d’engager le dialogue avec des spécialistes de la couleur: scientifiques (sciences humaines et sciences dures), artistes contemporains, conservateurs et producteurs de couleur. Pour cette table-ronde, la mobilisation croisée des compétences, des recherches et des créations des spécialistes de champs largement différents constitue l’un des principaux horizons susceptibles de faire progresser une réflexion autour de la couleur rouge et d’apporter une dynamique nouvelle dans la compréhension des productions symboliques artistiques du passé.

Inhabiting immersive territories in the Anthropocene
Habiter les territoires immersifs : perspectives écologiques, neuroscientifiques et esthétiques sur la littérature, les arts et le jeu vidéo à l’ère de l’Anthropocène. Alors que les habitats naturels se dégradent, les arts nous proposent des expériences immersives, qui ouvrent vers des modes nouveaux de l’habiter. Le jeu vidéo, la littérature, le cinéma, le théâtre, l’art contemporain créent des territoires qui nous invitent à l’exploration et au vagabondage, à la flânerie et à la contemplation. Que peuvent nous apprendre écologie, neuroscience et esthétique sur ces activités dont les enjeux éthiques et esthétiques – agencés au sein d’œuvres spécifiques – s’étendent à la manière dont habitons notre environnement planétaire ?

Ce prochain numéro de la revue Interfaces Numériques ambitionne de théoriser les rapports qui unissent l’attention, la présence et l’engagement. Cela situe d’emblée l’investigation au niveau des modalités d’implication générées tant par les médias interactifs, que par les situations vécues et les objets informatisés ou connectés qui les véhiculent. Notamment autour de l’image et des écrans, les efforts de théorisation pour cerner les caractéristiques de ces formes particulières et propres ont bien souvent rejoint les connaissances pratiques des concepteurs, inventeurs et designers investis dans l’expérimentation et l’exploitation…

Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology in Soviet Film and Culture
By maintaining the tension between artists’ imaginative approaches to technology in the Soviet Union (Meyerhold’s Biomechanics), film directors’ use of science such as physiology (Eisenstein’s Expressive Movement), and scientists’ own theorization of art history (Lev Vygotsky’s The Psychology of Art), this workshop aims at unpacking the historical and political forces behind Soviet film theory, film practice, and art history in relation to science and technology. While examining the juncture between art, science, and technology in post-Revolutionary Russia, with a focus on the avant-garde period until the death of Joseph Stalin, cinema is thus considered as a device beyond its medium of film (Francois Albera, Maria Tortajada: Cinema Beyond Film) and the medium-specificity of the arts is called into question.

Knowledge of the body between aesthetics and neurosciences
Les nombreuses recherches regroupées depuis vingt ans sous l’appellation de « neuroesthétique » représentent de manière emblématique, bien que controversée, une quête majeure de notre époque : celle de la compréhension du pouvoir cognitif du corps humain. La neuroesthétique a pu apparaître comme l’avant-garde d’un matérialisme renouvelé par les techniques d’imagerie cérébrale. Néanmoins, au-delà de son apport empirique, elle peut contribuer au développement d’un savoir théorique. Outre une interrogation critico-historique de la neuroesthétique, « Le sensible à l'œuvre » se propose d’aborder le corps comme un « a priori matériel » exprimé par les arts, notamment performatifs. Il rappellera ainsi que l’esthétique ne peut jouer son rôle dans la philosophie qu’en soulignant le lien inhérent entre le vécu et le corps vivant.

This symposium is organized in the context of the research activities of ésam Caen/Cherbourg and led by Jean-Baptiste Levée, in partnership with the Arts Graphiques festival of the University of Caen Basse-Normandie (ARG3).

Il se consacre aux illusions des sens (surtout du sens visuel) dans la littérature et les textes scientifiques du XVIIIème siècle (1690-1830). Des contributions d'historiens et d'historiennes de l'art sont également les bienvenues.

Approaches to the history of vision in the modern period, 19th-20th century
The CSC (Centro Interuniversitario di Storia Culturale) is looking for discussants for its fore-coming international conference on "The Gazing Society. Approaches to the history of vision in the modern period (19th-20th century)", that will take place in Padova, Italy at the beginning of 2012. The conference aims to be a stimulating opportunity for approaching the study of "the gazing society" between the 19th and the 20th centuries. Each historical period can be said to be characterized by its own “visual structures“, and, thus, by perceptive experiences, practices and languages which are culturally determined. History, and in particular modern history, can therefore offer a broad scope of research. The aim of the conference is precisely to build a comprehensive picture of the state of the art as well as to foster an international debate on the topic. The conference will be held in Italian and English.
