La diversité de leurs formes, la pluralité de leurs fonctions et leur potentiel métaphorique seront au cœur de la réflexion.

  Mystic, language and image - showing the invisible

  Montrer l'invisible

  Une première journée d’étude promue par le Centre d’Études Médiévales (CEM) de l’université de Genève le 15 avril 2016 investiguait les multiples rapports entre les langages musicaux et l’indicible. Le colloque interdisciplinaire Mystique, langage, image : montrer l’invisible (18/19 oct. 2019) qui se veux sa suite, déplace la perspective aux langages visuels. Que peut apporter l’analyse des représentations littéraires et imagées données dans les récits et dans la littérature mystiques à l’étude des représentations verbales et iconographiques du divin et de l’expérience qui en est faite ?  La réponse viendra de l’analyse concrète d’un matériel à rechercher tant dans le patrimoine littéraire que visuel, occidental et oriental. Un premier volet du colloque sera consacré à l'époque médiévale et renaissante, un second aux XVI^e et XVII^e siècles.

  Behind the wall and beyond the walls

  Travelogues, a privileged mode of narration in historical graphic novels (from Antiquity to the Renaissance)

  La bande-dessinée historique est l'un des genres majeurs développés dès les années 1950, et qui intéresse de plus en plus lecteurs et chercheurs. Il s'agira dans ce colloque d'étudier cette forme de narration particulière qui permet aux auteurs de recréer un univers qui n'existe plus, et d'y faire vivre une aventure — qu'elle soit destinée aux enfants ou aux adultes. La figure du barbare en mouvement, simple voyageur, commerçant, envahisseur, explorateur, captif, et le traitement narratif de son passage offrent un sujet d’étude propice à une meilleure compréhension du récit dessiné et de notre regard contemporain sur l’Antiquité, le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance.

  State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

  From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

  Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context

  A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

L’étude des tableaux vivants permet de réfléchir sur le caractère reproductible et la diffusion des œuvres d’art, sur l’apparition du terme dans la critique, sur les effets de réel et de présence, ou encore sur les relations entre image et performativité.
