  Call for papers - History

  Transnational Biographies. Destinies at the Crossroads throughout the 20th Century

  This call for papers seeks methodological and case-study perspectives on 20^th century biographies, interpreted within a framework of cross-national/transnational connections, surpassing the nation-centered apprehension of history. The contributions should acknowledge and interpret destinies and existences as subjected to transnational spaces and structures, while considering actors as non-state (or multi-state) entities. Moreover, we seek contributions that surpass the “center-periphery” paradigm, focusing on a “horizontal” approach, while also reversing the spotlight from diplomatic and political history towards the social and cultural dimension of it. Editors welcome contributions from different fields of research: history, political science, cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, gender studies or any other related areas of interest.

  Ismaÿl Urbain, Saint-Simonians and the Arabic-Muslim world

  Petit-fils d’une esclave africaine de Guyane, saint-simonien, converti à l’islam, Ismaÿl Urbain (1812-1884) fait partie de ces personnages « improbables » qui ont joué un rôle important en dépit de l’obscurité de leurs origines et de l’ostracisme dont le frappaient les  préjugés sociaux  de leur temps. Mémorialiste de l’entreprise saint-simonienne de coopération en Égypte en  1833-1837, inspirateur, propagandiste et artisan de la politique pro-arabe de Napoléon III en Algérie, il a laissé une œuvre écrite important encore mal connue qui a été l’objet ces vingt dernières années de travaux universitaires, recherches et publications dont le colloque du bicenternaire permettra de faire le point et de montrer l’intérêt  pour l’histoire de l’Algérie de la période coloniale.
