The conference aims at carrying on the international debate on the archaeological investigation of rock-cut spaces and stone quarries, considered as aspects of the same mining phenomenon: places in which specific empirical and handcrafted knowledge related to stone working is expressed and conveyed. The conference envisages a diachronic approach and therefore all case studies are welcome, without chronological limits.

Approaches to the history of berber
Perspectives on a language through the ages
Berber, a living language spoken throughout North Africa, has been the subject of significant linguistic research. However, relative to present-day Berber, earlier states of the language have received much less attention, and a global approach to its history has yet to be synthesized. In order to rebalance the situation and help fill in this gap, we propose to organize two international scientific meetings which will make it possible to draw up a survey of the available resources and to fix analytical priorities regarding documentary sources and historical linguistics, while creating a context for fruitful debate among researchers. We hope that this alliance of archaeologists, population geneticists, philologists, anthropologists, historians and linguists (descriptive, comparative, etc.) will be able to attain some of the goals identified.

The flower, the pig, the flask and the corpse - ecofacts and artifacts in funerary scenography
En archéologie, les rituels funéraires sont toujours complexes à appréhender, à restituer et à comprendre. Les travaux engagés sur cette thématique depuis quelques décennies ont mis en évidence la complexité des cérémonies au sein desquelles la création de la sépulture n’est qu’une étape. Les autres phases du rituel, comme la préparation du corps, le traitement des restes du bûcher en cas de crémation, les rituels funéraires et commémoratifs, sont souvent mal documentés tandis que les substances organiques ont rarement survécu à l’épreuve du temps. Parmi celles-ci, les offrandes biologiques (végétales / florales, alimentaires, cosmétiques, aromatiques, médicinales et magico-thérapeutiques…) posent de nombreux problèmes d’identification et d’interprétation dans le cadre des funérailles ou des commémorations.

In this special issue, for the journal Afriques. Historical debates, methods and fields,we wish to ask ourselves how ancient societies represented their own past, or at least the past states of societies which came before them. In other words: what perception, collections, inventories, archaeology, denials, or even destructions, did they perform on their previous pasts? Which continuities or breaks did they believe they had perceived? What did they believe their own elders or ancestors had passed on to them? We are seeking papers which specifically explore the relationships between a past which is doubly past, a present which no longer exists, and our own present.

The integraion of North Africa in the Islamic world (7th-10th centuries)
Dans le cadre des travaux initiés en 2013 par le Labex Les passés dans le présent (université Paris Nanterre), historiens de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge ont entrepris d’explorer, en se fondant sur des données textuelles et archéologiques, les étapes et modalités de l’intégration du Nord de l’Afrique au monde islamique, depuis la conquête arabo-musulmane jusqu’à la révolution fatimide. À l’issue d’un important travail de traduction des textes arabes qu’il conviendra de présenter, et dans la perspective d’un renouveau ininterrompu des sources disponibles dont on rendra compte, nous nous proposons de réunir dans ce colloque différents spécialistes internationaux de ce champ, spécialistes de plusieurs disciplines (archéologie, papyrologie, histoire…) afin d’explorer l’histoire de l’insertion de l’Afrique du Nord, et plus particulièrementde sa partie orientale, l’Ifrīqiya, dans le monde islamique entre le VIIe et le Xe siècle.

Work in progress on North Africa - from Antiquity to the present day
Ces dernières années, les recherches sur l’Afrique du Nord ont fait l’objet d’un dynamisme certain, toutes périodes historiques confondues. Le nombre d’études en cours, la variété des sujets et la diversité des approches sont importants et porteurs de renouvellements historiographiques. Malgré ce mouvement général, force est de constater une tendance au maintien des césures chronologiques classiques des grandes périodes historiques dans les sujets de recherche et dans les évènements scientifiques eux-mêmes. Partant de ce constat, l’université de Rouen et le Groupe de recherche histoire organisent le 22 mars 2017 une journée d’étude dont la finalité est la rencontre entre jeunes chercheurs de toutes périodes dont les travaux en cours portent sur l’Afrique du Nord.

Depuis 2014, le programme « Pouvoir politique et conversion religieuse (Antiquité – période moderne) – POCRAM travaille sur les variations du regard et de l’attitude du pouvoir politique face aux conversions religieuses de la fin de l’Antiquité à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Le colloque de 2018, inspiré par les questionnements qui ont émergé de nos travaux précédents, conservant la perspective de la longue durée, élargit les terrains d’enquête et ajoute à la rencontre des trois grands monothéismes d’autres configurations habituellement moins travaillées et des horizons géographiques et culturels plus larges.

11th international conference, "History and archaeology of North Africa"
Source de nourriture et matière première autant que porteur de symboles et de mythes, inspirant l'artiste et l'écrivain, l'animal tient une place essentielle dans les sociétés humaines. L'Afrique du Nord est un espace d'investigation très riche et encore peu exploité en ce domaine. On tentera donc d'y appréhender les relations complexes animal / homme. Le colloque s'articulera autour des rapports de l'homme avec l'animal, et vice-versa, de la préhistoire au Moyen Âge. Les animaux sont par essence sauvages : comment l'homme s'en est-il accommodé ? Des forêts de la Tunisie à l'Atlas, des rivages méditerranéens et atlantiques aux zones présahariennes, pullulaient diverses catégories d'animaux sauvages et fauves. Entre peur et volonté de les chasser, les populations rurales durent lutter pour se protéger de ces animaux. On interrogera tout autant l'archéologie que les sources autour de trois thématiques principales : l'animal utile : une ressource, des utilisations, des systèmes économiques ; l'animal nuisible ; l'animal en représentation : symboles, iconographies, croyances.

Penser le temps et écrire l’histoire de l’Afrique
Ordonner le temps, telle semble être la tâche qui incombe à l’historien. Qu’il s’agisse de la construction d’une chronologie, de ses efforts pour dater ses sources ou de son positionnement dans l’historiographie, le rapport de l’historien au temps est constant. Ce rapport et cette recomposition du temps revêtent des formes complexes et variées. La question du temps relève d’une obsession, comme le souligne Ousmane Sembène, qui qualifie les historiens de « chronophages ». Les historiens « mangent le temps en le disciplinant ; ils réduisent la multiplicité des discours et le chevauchement multiple, bigarré et tout en zigzag des évènements. Par cet aplatissement, ils rendent, paradoxalement, le temps et l’évènement sans importance ». C’est sur la question du rapport au temps complexe et intrinsèque à la discipline historique que ce séminaire souhaite se consacrer, en apportant une réflexion centrée sur l’histoire de l’Afrique. En effet, la question des usages de la temporalité dans l’élaboration de l’histoire des sociétés africaines soulève des problèmes spécifiques que ce séminaire cherchera à approfondir.
