The logics of the inventory: classifying archives, books, objects (Middle Ages - 19th century)
The conference will investigate all sorts of practices related to any document that can non-restrictivly be regarded as an inventory, catalog, index, etc. Inventories are indeed established and used in particular contexts. Each proposes its own particular classification and order, though not always explicitly, so that any ordering and structuring of archives, books or objects deserves to be considered as an innovative and creative action.

“Afriques. Historical debates, methods and fields” journal
In this special issue, for the journal Afriques. Historical debates, methods and fields,we wish to ask ourselves how ancient societies represented their own past, or at least the past states of societies which came before them. In other words: what perception, collections, inventories, archaeology, denials, or even destructions, did they perform on their previous pasts? Which continuities or breaks did they believe they had perceived? What did they believe their own elders or ancestors had passed on to them? We are seeking papers which specifically explore the relationships between a past which is doubly past, a present which no longer exists, and our own present.

Spaces, material cultures, and scenographies in Africa before the 20th century
This special issue on continental and insular Africa (including North Africa) aims to discuss relations between urban territoriality and the exercise of power before the 20th century – excluding European-built cities – from an interdisciplinary standpoint, with particular reference to material culture and symbolic systems. It will be published on the journal Afriques. Débats, méthodes et terrains d’histoire.

On administrative and legal documents in Africa
Historians, anthropologists, linguists and specialists from other relevant disciplines are invited to submit proposals for articles in French or English devoted to the production, transmission and conservation of administrative and legal documents in Africa to the exclusion of texts from Western colonial administrations. The purpose is to establish a state-of-the-art account of African practices related to administrative and legal documents. Attention should be paid to documents that, often said to be “performative” and/or normative, are intended to have an effect, for instance: grants of donation, contracts, charters, funeral inscriptions, correspondence, inventories or any other “archived” documents. This special issue seeks to update the study of administrative and legal texts in Africa thanks to the advances made in research on “literacy” since the 1970s.

Perspectives on the transmission and use of the Koranic text
Cette journée d’étude est destinée à présenter et discuter les usages que différentes communautés musulmanes ont fait du Coran dans des régions et à des moments divers, depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu’au XIXe, d’al-Andalus à l’Asie centrale. Le but est de voir si certains passages se répètent de manière systématique dans les exemples qui seront analysés, si d’autres ne s’utilisent jamais et s’il serait possible de parler, en se fondant sur les sélections qui pourraient être identifiées, de « religiosités populaires ». Les matériaux qui servent de point de départ dans cette journée sont divers : extraits coraniques transmis par des manuscrits, exégèse, hadith, inscriptions des mosquées et monnaies, sans oublier des textes d’autres traditions qui ont pu marquer l’islam.

The materials of the "ancient" history of African societies
L’objectif de ce séminaire de recherche est de créer un nouveau lieu de rendez-vous et de discussion autour des travaux des chercheurs spécialisés dans le champ de l’histoire « ancienne » de l’Afrique. Centré sur les recherches actuelles du groupe de chercheurs, de doctorants et d’étudiants en master constitué ces dernières années au CEMAf-Paris, son objectif est de partager les expériences de chacun relatives aux sources de l’histoire de l’Afrique « ancienne », et de faire émerger de nouvelles questions et de nouvelles dynamiques de recherche.

Encounters and Crossroads. A History of African Societies in the Globalization, 15th-20th c.
L’objectif de ce séminaire mensuel, proposé par les doctorants en histoire du CEMAf, est de réévaluer la place et le rôle des sociétés africaines dans l’histoire de la mondialisation, et de remettre en question la tendance de l’histoire globale à concevoir les sociétés africaines comme de simples réceptacles de ce processus. Il s’appuie sur la diversité géographique, chronologique et thématique des doctorants. Chaque séance, construite autour d’interventions de jeunes chercheurs et de chercheurs confirmés, privilégiera l’analyse des modes d’interaction entre le local, le régional et le global, et permettra d’interroger les modalités d’action des sociétés africaines dans le processus de mondialisation.
