  The author – Wanted, dead or alive

  New perspectives on the concept of authorship, 1700-1900

  The goal of this conference is to reassess, challenge, and enlarge the concept of authorship, by giving the author a post-mortem of sorts. To do this, we want to bring together fresh and critical historiographical perspectives on the concept of authorship, and challenge participants to think in comparative and transnational frameworks. Ideally, we seek to draw together work from a wide variety of sub-disciplines, creating a dialogue which connects often-separated fields such as book history and literary history.

  Ottoman Urban Studies Seminar 2008-2009

  Daily Life in Ottoman Towns

  What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.

  Police et empires coloniaux, 1700-1900

  Cinquième journées d’études du Programme CIRSAP (Circulation et construction des savoirs policiers en Europe, 1650-1850)

  Cette rencontre a pour objet la « police », les dispositifs et les forces au service de l’idéal classique de « l’État bien policé » des Lumières comme les pratiques régulatrices et sécuritaires qui s’imposent à partir du XIXe siècle. La police – sous des formes diverses – a joué un rôle crucial dans l’histoire des empires, mais elle reste un secteur mal connu de l’État colonial. Cette rencontre vise à rapprocher l’histoire impériale et celle du fait policier et réévaluer le poids des expériences coloniales dans l’histoire longue des polices nationales et dans celle des modèles d’action étatique et de gestion des populations. L’histoire de la police doit être ainsi envisagée dans une perspective d’histoire « globale », sans séparer les transformations coloniales de celles qui se jouent dans la métropole ou dans d’autres secteurs de l’Empire. Une hypothèse féconde serait de considérer les polices coloniales comme des terrains d’expériences (humaines) et d’expérimentations (techniques), qui ont fécondé à leur tour les polices métropolitaines. Ces journées d’étude ont ainsi l’ambition de rassembler les historiens des empires coloniaux et de la police du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècle intéressés par ces perspectives.
