Moi(s) Montaigne conference series 2019
L’université Bordeaux Montaigne invite à aller à la rencontre de Michel de Montaigne et de son œuvre à travers le regard d’un chercheur invité pour un mois de résidence. Cette année, le Moi(s) Montaigne accueille Sanjay Subrahmanyam (Collège de France-université de Californie à L. A.). Cet historien spécialiste de la première mondialisation, celle du temps de Montaigne, se propose de dépasser les récits nationaux au profit d’« histoires en conversation » ou « histoires connectées ».

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

The flower, the pig, the flask and the corpse - ecofacts and artifacts in funerary scenography
En archéologie, les rituels funéraires sont toujours complexes à appréhender, à restituer et à comprendre. Les travaux engagés sur cette thématique depuis quelques décennies ont mis en évidence la complexité des cérémonies au sein desquelles la création de la sépulture n’est qu’une étape. Les autres phases du rituel, comme la préparation du corps, le traitement des restes du bûcher en cas de crémation, les rituels funéraires et commémoratifs, sont souvent mal documentés tandis que les substances organiques ont rarement survécu à l’épreuve du temps. Parmi celles-ci, les offrandes biologiques (végétales / florales, alimentaires, cosmétiques, aromatiques, médicinales et magico-thérapeutiques…) posent de nombreux problèmes d’identification et d’interprétation dans le cadre des funérailles ou des commémorations.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History
2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network
The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

Que nous apprennent les artéfacts probatoires produits pour régler les litiges commerciaux au sujet de la configuration juridique de la Méditerranée entre les XVe et XIXe siècles ? Depuis 2012, le programme européen ConfigMed s’attache à étudier les litiges commerciaux, le pluralisme juridique et le commerce interculturel en Méditerranée, à la croisée de traditions, de régimes et de référents juridiques divers dont il s’agit d’étudier les rencontres, les compromis et les éventuelles contaminations à partir des conflits impliquant des acteurs économiques venus d’Europe, de l’empire ottoman et du Maghreb. Cette rencontre ambitionne de poursuivre ces travaux et ces réflexions en mettant tout particulièrement l’accent sur la production et la circulation des éléments de preuve en Méditerranée. En partant de l’examen des certificats, des attestations et des déclarations, on tâchera d’examiner leurs effets, tant sur le monde des affaires que sur des systèmes juridiques souvent pensés comme étanches.

The Ottoman Empire is one of the multi-ethnic, multi-confessional and transcontinental empires that, for centuries, shaped the history of Europe and the world. Despite their collapses, their effects can be felt up to the present day. The Ottoman Empire’s history is usually divided into two phases: its construction and consolidation from the 14th to the 17th century, and its decay and collapse from the 18th to the 20th century.

Autobiographical accounts in questions: forms, spaces, and temporalities
L’objectif de cette journée d’études est de mettre à l’épreuve un regard pluridisciplinaire sur des sources croisées, du texte à l’image, de la mise en scène des corps à celle d’un environnement d’objets, pour entamer un dialogue sur la multiplicité, la singularité et l'historicité des formes du récit de soi. Comment le soi est-il différemment configuré dans des modes d’expression diversifiés, marqués par des degrés de compétences inégaux et toujours socialement inscrits ? Pour ne céder ni à l’évolution historiciste vers une prétendue réalisation de l’individu, ni à l’enfermement culturaliste d’aires géographiques cloisonnées, cette journée d’étude mobilise une démarche comparative, connectée à une « histoire-monde », seule capable de faire émerger le récit de soi comme un outil heuristique, transdisciplinaire et transhistorique, permettant d’interroger les modes d’être potentiellement différenciés de la dignité humaine et de la constitution de l’acteur en sujet de son action. -

Cette journée d’études a pour objet d’engager une réflexion sur la nature des récits génétiques, en tant que configurations narratives de l’identité des acteurs sociaux, du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine et dans une perspective comparatiste entre l’Europe méditerranéenne et l’Afrique. Le terme générique de « récit génétique » permet ici de rendre compte du lien fondamental qui existe entre récits d’origine collectifs (religieux et / ou ethnogénétiques) et généalogies familiales dont nous nous proposons de mettre en lumière les interactions. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi. -

Daily Life in Ottoman Towns
What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
