  Oriental monarchisms from the Nile to the Mediterranean

  Organising monastic life in East Africa from late Antiquity to the Middle Ages (Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, 4th-16th century)

  Ce séminaire organisé par l’École française de Rome et le Pontificio Istituto Orientale depuis 2018 est dédié à l’étude du monachisme en Afrique orientale de l’Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge. Cette deuxième session est consacrée à la question de l’organisation de la vie monastique en Égypte, Nubie et Éthiopie et privilégie les études de cas. Les rencontres mensuelles entendent mieux identifier et saisir les  normes et les modalités pratiques qui régissent l’administration, la gestion, le contrôle et l’aménagement des institutions monastiques. Une attention particulière sera accordée à la vie quotidienne des moines et des moniales en Afrique orientale dont certains aspects demeurent largement méconnus.

  Water Management in the Mediterranean during the 1st Millennium BC

  IIIe symposium international HYDRΩMED

  The aim of the meeting is to compare the different modes of adaptation of the Ancient Mediterranean populations to the environmental resources, especially their hydric resources. In a climate marked by unequal distribution of water, the ancient societies, whether Phoenician-Punic, Greek or Etruscan, responded in different ways to the various situations, let alone the hydric crises which may have affected them. The meeting will associate systemic theoretical reflections as well as case studies on ancient sites, to outline the mutations and the permanencies, the possible technological transfers from one society to another. Here, as in other fields of human activity, we shall query the existence of an ancient Mediterranean koine around the knowledge and the technical practices, around the cultural and cultural traditions. The chronology considered runs from the 8^th to the 1^st century BC, i.e. before the diffusion of the Roman models and techniques.

  Meet the New Gods, Same as the Old Gods? Formulary, Ritual and Status in Hellenistic Ruler Cult

  Panel to be held at the Eighth Celtic Conference in Classics

  Despite recent and widespread interest in Greek hero and ruler cult, evaluating the processes that lead to the bestowal of cultic honours on Hellenistic sovereigns still remains a controversial matter. Political readings of such honours within the framework of contemporary international diplomacy and euergetic discourse have picked up on polarities widely discussed by previous bibliography, such as "dynastic vs. civic", "living vs. posthumous", etc. Yet the main focus is still limited to a "top-down" perspective, which leaves aside the fascinating dialectics between "private" and "public", or to perhaps phrase this more accurately, between "institutional" and "non-institutional" actors.

  Crossed perspectives on religious minorities (Middle Ages / Modern Era)

  ARC seminar 2012-2013

  Le Séminaire Regards croisés sur les minorités clôture le projet ARC (Action de recherche concertée) du Centre interdisciplinaire d’étude des Religions et de la laïcité (CIERL), intitulé « La Religion de l’Autre. Lecture et interprétation de l’altérité religieuse dans l’islam, le christianisme et le judaïsme, de l’Antiquité tardive à nos jours », entamé en 2008. Se concentrant sur le Moyen Âge et le début de l’époque moderne, ce séminaire s’interrogera sur les regards que des penseurs, chroniqueurs, ou voyageurs juifs, chrétiens ou musulmans, ont pu poser sur les pratiques politiques, sociales et religieuses en usage dans les civilisations relevant des autres religions, ou dans les minorités religieuses. L’objectif est surtout de procéder à des études de cas, qui permettront, sur des exemples précis, de mieux comprendre les réalités et les mentalités de l’époque.

  James Zebedee, the "translatio" and the Jacobean pilgrimages

  7th International Colloquium Compostela

  The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages.  As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella.

  Fourth annual conference

  Le seul traité antique d’onirocritique préservé dans sa totalité est celui d’Artémidore de Daldis, auteur grec de la fin du IIe siècle de notre ère. Depuis septembre 2007, le Groupe Artémidore en a entrepris une nouvelle édition et traduction annotée. En mars 2009, il a organisé une première journée d’études autour de cette œuvre et de l’interprétation des rêves dans les civilisations du passé. Celle-ci sera la quatrième.
