Montaigne et l'empire portugais
Moi(s) Montaigne 2019
L’université Bordeaux Montaigne invite à aller à la rencontre de Michel de Montaigne et de son œuvre à travers le regard d’un chercheur invité pour un mois de résidence. Cette année, le Moi(s) Montaigne accueille Sanjay Subrahmanyam (Collège de France-université de Californie à L. A.). Cet historien spécialiste de la première mondialisation, celle du temps de Montaigne, se propose de dépasser les récits nationaux au profit d’« histoires en conversation » ou « histoires connectées ».

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

Guerre et mouvements de populations dans l’Empire ottoman (XIVe-XVIIIe siècle)
L’Empire ottoman fait partie des empires multi-ethniques, multiconfessionnels et transcontinentaux qui, pendant des siècles, ont façonné l’histoire de l’Europe et du monde. Les traces qu’il a laissées dans l’histoire de l’Europe sont encore visibles de nos jours. L’histoire de l’Empire ottoman est traditionnellement divisée en deux phases : celle de sa consolidation et de sa structuration du XIVe au XVIIe siècle et celle de sa décadence et sa dissolution du XVIIIe au XXe siècle.

Jarres et grands contenants entre Moyen Âge et époque moderne
1er congrès international thématique de l’AIECM3
Le thème retenu pour ce premier congrès thématique de l'AIECM3, co-organisé avec le LA3M, concerne les jarres, les grands contenants, les grands vases de jardin et d’industrie, entre Moyen Âge et époque moderne dans l’ensemble du bassin méditerranéen, le Proche et le Moyen-Orient, le Caucase et l’Asie Centrale. Seront pris en compte tous les contenants de stockage, de conservation, de préparation et d’emballage, fixes ou utilisés pour le transport (à l’exception des amphores). Les communications portent sur la typologie, les techniques de fabrication et/ou sur la destination fonctionnelle de ces objets, au travers des sources écrites, de l’archéologie et de l’ethnographie.

La première rencontre du programme « Schisme et frontières d’Églises (XVIe –XVIIIe siècle) » se tiendra à Rome les 4 et 5 juillet 2013. Ces journées, organisées par l'École française de Rome et le Centre d'études et de recherche en histoire culturelle (université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne) sont intitulées « Réflexions sur le schisme moderne: usages et critères ».

Les recueils de fables enchâssées avant les « Mille et Une Nuits »
« Calila et Dimna », « Barlaam et Josaphat » et le « Roman des Sept Sages » ont marqué toute l’histoire de la littérature orientale avant de connaître un essor impressionnant dans l’ensemble du domaine occidental ; quant à la « Disciplina Clericalis » de Pierre Alphonse, elle constitue l’un des recueils de contes les plus importants que le Moyen Âge nous a transmis, comme en témoigne son extraordinaire diffusion du «Roman de Renart » au « Décaméron » de Boccace. Le colloque se donne pour objectif d’enrichir l’état actuel des recherches sur ces recueils, afin de faire apparaître le potentiel herméneutique et épistémologique d’un courant littéraire naguère fort prisé et aujourd’hui méconnu. -

Religions et politique dans les Orients d'Europe (XIVe-XXe siècle)
The goal of this conference is to explore a number of aspects of the relationship between the religious phenomenon and politics through the historical framework of political developments in what progressively will become, through interaction, the Orients of Europe, i.e. Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, an area so unorthodox and difficult to examine in terms of essentialist definitions. It is no accident that Samuel Huntington believed that what we call the ‘Orthodox East’ does not form a part of the West, but rather a sui generis encounter between Christianity and Islam at the borders of Europe. This theoretical scheme is not overturned by drawing the borders of Europe a little further to the East, as many believe, but by historicizing the issue of the relationship between religion and politics in the given geographical region through the comparative prism of what was occurring during the same period in Western Europe. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi. -

Vingt-cinq siècles de bain collectif (Proche-Orient, Égypte et Péninsule arabique)
Le troisième colloque international Balnéorient se déroulera à Damas, du 2 au 6 novembre 2009, en étroite coordination avec la Direction générale des Antiquités et des musées de Syrie et l'Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo). Après les approches diachroniques et régionales des colloques Balnéorient d'Alexandrie (dec. 2006) et d'Amman (mai 2008), cette troisième rencontre sur l'histoire du bain collectif depuis l'Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours favorisera les approches thématiques et comparatistes, dans une même démarche pluridisciplinaire. Daily Life in Ottoman Towns
What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
