Call for papers - Urban studies
Echi dell'antico nell'architettura del primo Novecento
Il Dipartimento di Storia, Disegno e Restauro dell'architettura (DSDRA) della Sapienza, Università di Roma, bandisce una call for papers per selezionare i contributi del convegno internazionale “Forme dell’abitare a Roma. Echi dell’antico nell’architettura del primo Novecento”, che si terrà il 11 e 12 Novembre 2021 a Roma. Il convegno intende focalizzare l’attenzione sul tema dell'architettura residenziale a Roma mettendo in relazione gli studi sulle tipologie e sul linguaggio architettonico dell'antichità con le esperienze dei primi decenni del Novecento, realizzate contestualmente allo sviluppo abitativo della Capitale.

Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period

The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

1969-2019 – fifty years of "Autunno caldo": between historiography, heritage and testimony
Ce colloque envisage de donner, cinquante ans après les événements, une lecture historique de ce qu'on pourrait appeler le « secondo biennio rosso italiano » (1968-1969) et d’analyser les changements profonds, aux niveaux théorique, philosophique, politique, économique et juridique, survenus grâce aux luttes de l’époque pour améliorer les conditions de vie et de travail des ouvriers. On envisagera également la question de l'« héritage » de cette époque. Que reste-t-il aujourd'hui des luttes, des revendications, desformes d'organisation qu'il a vu naître ou s'affirmer ?

De Gruyter and the team of the Art Market Dictionary (AMD) are currently looking for authors interested in contributing to their encyclopedia project. The AMD is the first reference work providing encompassing information on commercial art galleries, dealers, auction houses, fairs and advisers in Europe, the USA and Canada in the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to appear in 2020, it will be published in print and as an online searchable database. It is edited by Johannes Nathan and supported by a number of specialized institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, or the Archives of American Art.

Migrations and circulations between Italy and France from the 19th century to the present day
À l’occasion de la présentation de l’exposition « Ciao Italia. Immigration et cultures italiennes en France 1860-1960 » à l’Institut français – Centre Saint-Louis, le colloque réunira des chercheurs français et italiens de différentes disciplines afin d’examiner divers aspects des flux migratoires entre l’Italie et la France à l’époque contemporaine. Il s’agit de souligner l’importance et la grande fluidité des mouvements de populations entre les deux pays depuis un siècle et demi. Ces migrations, d’une grande diversité géographique et sociale en fonction des circonstances, contribuent à façonner un espace circulatoire transalpin, cadre d’analyse qui permet de dépasser le traditionnel couple émigration / immigration. À l’heure où la question migratoire suscite des tensions entre la France et l’Italie, une perspective inscrite dans la durée doit permettre de saisir, au-delà des enjeux démographiques et économiques, les effets politiques et culturels de ces migrations du point de vue des rapports entre Français et Italiens.

Cette journée d’étude sera consacrée principalement aux années 1980 et aux multiples facettes d'un débat qui a vu la France protagonistes du renouvellement de la scène architecturale et de la remise en cause du "paradigme moderniste". La double influence du débat anglais et italien fait de la France un cas de synthèse emblématique de ces deux courants.

Passages, passengers and crossing borders
Daniel Fabre (1947-2016) and the anthropology of heritage
La diversité des hommages qui lui ont été rendus depuis sa disparition témoignent aussi bien de la densité de la vie intellectuelle que de la diversité des implications institutionnelles caractérisant le parcours de Daniel Fabre (1947-2016). Si ce colloque entend resserrer la focale sur les années « parisiennes » de cet anthropologue, celles qui virent la création et le développement du LAHIC, aujourd’hui rattaché à l’IIAC, il ne s’emploiera pas moins à tirer les fils rouges qui traversent son œuvre, afin d’en souligner la cohérence et d’en repérer les ressorts, tant du côté des objets, des outils d’analyse que d’une sensibilité profonde aux marques du passé. Il s’agira également de mettre en évidence l’originalité d’une posture d’anthropologue, occupé à comprendre le phénomène aujourd’hui global d’institution de la culture et dans le même temps engagé dans un dialogue de longue haleine avec le ministère de la Culture, ouvrant ainsi la voie à une anthropologie du patrimoine aujourd’hui florissante.

Contemporary song of Langue d'Oc and Italy. Roots, dialect and transnational dynamics
Ces dernières décennies ont vu une diversification notable de la scène musicale occitane. La chanson d'oc s'est renouvelée dans les échanges avec des musiciens issus d'autres sphères culturelles, souvent méditerranéennes, mais pas seulement. L'étude de ces dynamiques transnationales permet de comprendre comment la chanson dialectale pose des questions essentielles : rapport entre dimensions locales, nationales et mondialisation, enracinement et multiculturalisme, face à face entre cultures dominantes et civilisations minorées. Nous consacrerons une journée aux liens entre la chanson d'oc et l'Italie. Nous étudierons les échanges entre la chanson d'oc et la culture italienne conçue comme une mosaïque de cultures régionales, dans une dynamique à double sens, sans limite dans le temps (héritage culturel lointain, choix d'instruments ancrés dans une pratique musicale ancestrale, influences récentes).

Les mutineries dans l'armée française en 1917 sont maintenant bien connues. Elles ont fait l'objet d’importants travaux depuis le travail pionnier de Guy Pedroncini en 1967, puis celui de Leonard V. Smith en 1994, et plus récemment des études renouvelées de Denis Rolland en 2005, d’André en 2010. Mais on peut se demander si le prisme français n’a pas eu tendance à isoler les mutineries françaises des autres phénomènes de refus qui ont touché d'autres armées belligérantes. C'est pourquoi, à l'occasion du centenaire de l'année 1917, ce colloque se propose de resituer le phénomène des refus collectifs dans le contexte plus large du premier conflit mondial.

Focusing on the works by Leone (1909-1944) and Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) the Summer School is dedicated to a reflection on the authors’ contribution to the 20th century Italian and European history. Besides a critical analysis of their creative and intellectual activity and their civic engagement, the participants will have the opportunity to debate the role both Leone and Natalia had in the publishing house Einaudi, and to experiment new methods of teaching literature. The Organizing Committee encourages studies that also examine minor political parties.The Organizing Committee invites scholars of different disciplines interested in the topic topropose papers on Italian political parties’ attitudes, roles, points of view, and reactions in front of:- stragismo and subversive plots against Italian Republic; origin, development, and social consensus of left-wing armed struggle; the main political changes of the period (e.g., the crisis of center-left governments, the 1974 referendum, the 1975 and 1976 elections, the governments of national solidarity, the end of the Christian-democratic centrality); the dangers of right-wing terrorism; the emergency legislation; the exit strategies from terrorism.

Italy’s Decade of War: 1935-1945 in International Perspective
From the invasion of Abyssinia to the end of World War II, Italy experienced a decade of war. This conference aims to re-evaluate the history of the Italian experience during this ten-year period with a unifying perspective that places the Italian Fascist regime and its foreign and military enterprises in an entirely internationalised framework of analysis. It will bring an international focus upon the Italian role in the break-down of the international system and appeasement, and will analyse the consequences of Italian militarism on a global scale. It will explore comparative and transnational histories of the Italian occupations of France, the Balkans, Greece, and Albania, as well as the Allied occupation of Italy following the defeat.

The roots of fascist culture, between Latinity and the Mediterranean
Dans les dernières années du XXe siècle, avec la fin des grands affrontements idéologiques et intellectuels, un relatif consensus s’est fait jour sur les grands aspects de la doctrine comme du régime fascistes. Un sujet se révèle cependant en reste et continue de susciter controverses et polémiques : la culture fasciste. Discours politiques, articles de presse, essais, œuvres littéraires, artistiques et politiques, archives politiques et diplomatiques attendent les chercheurs qui les interrogeront à travers cette approche précise. Ce colloque entend véritablement afficher une dimension pluridisciplinaire en ce qu’il fera travailler des chercheurs issus de disciplines différentes sur le même corpus.
