Frontier(s) and Frontier-zone(s) in the English-speaking world
Call for papers
It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

Imagined Identities and Communities in the Late Middle Ages
On December 9 and 10 of this year, the “Cultures i Societats de l'Edat Mitjana” (CiSEM) research group, led by Dr. Antoni Furió, professor of medieval history at the University of Valencia, will hold a conference with the title: Imagined Identities and Imagined Communities in the Late Middle Ages. Far from being strictly contemporary creations, nations, the most elaborated product of imagined communities, had their relevance throughout the medieval centuries. The most recent historiography has tried to establish the mechanisms that contributed to building this type of imaginary in which, according to some anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists, collective identities are taking an increasingly prominent role in international geopolitics. For this reason, this process is presented as a great opportunity to discuss the most recent historiographical contributions, and to try to shed more light on a transcendental historical phenomenon on the evolution of human societies.

Approches historiques et perspectives actuelles
Ce colloque international et transdisciplinaire est sponsorisé par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du projet DIGITENS H2020 (H2020-MSCA-RISE 2018) et a pour objectif de s’interroger sur l’évolution des espaces de sociabilité du long dix-huitième siècle et sur leur persistance à travers les époques. L’analyse de l’interaction entre la sociabilité et l’espace ainsi que des modes de construction des espaces de sociabilité de l’époque moderne à l’époque contemporaine/actuelle permettra une relecture de l’histoire des sociétés européennes et impériales. Cette approche fournira un prisme original et diachronique, permettant une meilleure compréhension de leur héritage, dans la mesure où la sociabilité a contribué à donner un cadre aux interactions sociales des temps modernes et à redéfinir l’organisation spatiale des siècles à venir.

Revue « Études Médiévales Anglaises »
Though space is by no means a medieval concept (in 14th century use, the word referred primarily to time, or to an interval between two objects, rather than to the abstract idea of an extended area that can be filled or crossed), the concept in its complexity has over the last decades gained considerable critical importance in medieval studies. Medievalists have always paid attention to spatial questions, namely in the shape of inquiries into the location of national or religious communities, into medieval practices of pilgrimages, processions and travels, or into the symbolic associations of various places (the forest, the garden, the castle…).

How can one assess the adhesion of individuals and social groups to the multi-ethnic and multicultural British nation of our times? Where should their identity be inscribed on the canvas of composite identities, some of which might either be regarded as tokens of tolerance and inclusion, or be considered (by others) as potential threats for the cohesion of the nation? To penetrate the deepest strata of British identity, we propose to combine the methods of research in civilization with a multi-disciplinary approach...

Transnational Networks and the British Empire (Ca. 18-20th centuries)
This workshop intends to bring together research scholars of history and affiliated fields working on transnational networks fostered through the British Empire. We wish to focus on how certain forms of the “empire”, the “colony”, and the “outside” mutually constituted each other. Such an approach, we believe, could illumine the dense transnational convergences that shape the political, the economic, the social, and the cultural in various locations simultaneously.

France and New Zealand during the Great War: the Centenary Conference 1918-2018
Le 4 novembre 1918, les troupes néo-zélandaises libérèrent la ville fortifiée du Quesnoy après une bataille décisive qui fut leur dernière offensive de la Grande Guerre. Des liens d’amitié se formèrent par la suite entre les soldats et les civils libérés et, jusqu’à ce jour, de nombreux Néo-Zélandais visitent le Quesnoy, la seule ville française à être jumelée avec une ville en Nouvelle-Zélande, la ville de Cambridge dans la région du Waipa.

Radiohead’s musical, cultural, and political legacies
Following a symposium held at Rennes 2 University last may, further contributions (in English or French) are now sought in order to publish a wide-ranging, peer-reviewed collection of articles appraising OK Computer’s musical, cultural and political legacy twenty years after its release. The aim of this publication is to bring together contributions from scholars who wish to confront Radiohead’s work with their own disciplinary methodologies, including (but not limited to) musicology, sociology, art history, political science, literature, cultural studies or even economics.

Dissonance, eclecticism and the fusion of genres in modern and contemporary English-speaking culture
L’objet de cette journée d’études est d’interroger les possibilités ouvertes par la sociologie culturelle - notamment les concepts d'omnivorisme, d'éclectisme, de dissonance - aux autres disciplines, notamment celles (civilisation, littérature, histoire) traditionnellement attachées à des aires culturelles (anglophone notamment) et plus ouvertes au syncrétisme théorique que la sociologie. La problématique du mélange des genres constitue-elle une approche permettant d’appréhender la culture dans son ensemble ? C’est ce que nous nous proposons de déplier pendant cette journée d’études, en s’attachant à la fois au point de vue des consommateurs, des créateurs et des créations culturelles.

Women in the public space, 1800-1939
Great Britain, Ireland, Empire and Commonwealth
“The Angel in the House” is the image most commonly retained of British women in the nineteenth century. This reductive and repressive ideal, emerging from values propagated by the literary, religious, medical political discourses of the time, still persists today in the collective unconscious. Although this model has increasingly been questioned by researchers in the humanities, the focus has tended to be on the beginning of the 20th century. This one-day conference aims to pursue this still neglected area, bringing the Victorian and Edwardian woman further out of her “cloister” or “sphere”, and exploring the destinies of those women who occupied the public space in Great Britain, Ireland and, by extension, the Empire: activists, explorers, artists, writers and sportswomen to name but a few.

Cette journée d'étude portera sur l’histoire transnationale des relations et échanges franco-britanniques au XVIIIe siècle. Nous aborderons les thèmes des échanges culturels, intellectuels, politiques et économiques entre la France et la Grande-Bretagne, dans le but de dresser un bilan des nouvelles approches historiographiques, tout en tentant de contribuer à l’élargissement de ce champ florissant de recherches. L’atelier sera transnational en pratique aussi : il réunira en effet des spécialistes d’Amérique du Nord et de la Grande Bretagne, ainsi que des historiens français.

Le Royaume-Uni offre depuis longtemps un terreau fertile pour les utopies et expérimentations urbaines. De Utopia de Thomas More en 1516 aux New Towns des années 1950 et 1960 en passant par News from Nowhere de William Morris en 1890, la société britannique a fourni l’inspiration à nombre de visionnaires critiques de la société contemporaine afin de formuler des projets sociétaux autres. Cette journée d'études s’intéressera aux projets mis en œuvre en milieu urbain depuis le XIXe siècle pour transformer celui-ci et parfois, au-delà, la société britannique dans son ensemble.

Whether one thinks of environment as context, setting, climate change, green spaces or sounds, today’s epistemology invites us to rethink man’s relation to the external world to the extent that the “inside” and “outside” coalesce, nature and culture merge, man and animal are reconfigured. How have British artists responded to these shifting perceptions of the world around them, of this great swirling circle of life and non life in which they found – or imagined – themselves diversely positioned, for a long time at the centre, then in a more undefined place – at the margin even? How has art itself positioned itself in this newly defined environment?

Congrès 2017 de la Société Française Shakespeare
En ces temps de violences économiques, d’angoisses écologiques, de migrations forcées, de guerres et de terrorismes, il apparaît pertinent d’examiner les manières dont les scènes élisabéthaine et jacobéenne ont thématisé et utilisé la peur, et de réfléchir aux résonances qu’elles continuent de susciter aujourd’hui. On citera à cet égard le livre de Robert Appelbaum, qui n’hésite pas à nommer « terrorisme » la violence qui a secoué la société anglaise de la première modernité, du massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy aux complots et aux révoltes populaires. Le rapport entre Shakespeare et la peur passe notamment par les réappropriations des pièces dans le contexte des crises que nous traversons aujourd’hui. Comment se sert-on ou s’est-on appuyé sur Shakespeare pour conjurer la peur, ou pour déconstruire les mécanismes de la terreur, tant celle de la dictature que celle des attentats aveugles.

The circulation of popular culture between Ireland and the USA (18th-21st centuries)
Dans le système de culture mondialisée qui caractérise les sociétés contemporaines, l'organisation d'un colloque international invite à concentrer l’attention sur un cas d’étude, la circulation des diverses formes de culture populaire entre Irlande et États-Unis. L’ancienneté, la constance et de l’intensité des échanges culturels entre les deux nations sont en effet largement antérieurs à la mondialisation culturelle ultra-contemporaine. Cette singularité inscrite dans la longue durée permet de mettre en perspective les phénomènes contemporains tout en les interrogeant.
