Frontier(s) and Frontier-zone(s) in the English-speaking world
Call for papers
It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

Importance of Minority Issues and Construction of Identity in the UK
Socio-Political Discourses in Art as a Tool and Framework for Institutions
Les présentations des participants inviteront à réfléchir à l’intersection entre l’intégration des minorités au sein de la société britannique sous le prisme de l’art, qu’ils soient populaires ou impulsés par les pouvoirs publics et à nous interroger sur l’analyse filmique des minorités en compagnie de spécialistes tels que Rosalind Galt et Karl Schoonover. Nous nous efforcerons de comprendre dans quelle mesure la culture et les arts peuvent servir un processus social d’intégration et d’inclusion des minorités, ou au contraire essentialisent les différences de l’autre. Les propositions pourront éventuellement s’intéresser aux dimensions culturelles, socio-économiques et politiques de cette intersection complexe.

How can one assess the adhesion of individuals and social groups to the multi-ethnic and multicultural British nation of our times? Where should their identity be inscribed on the canvas of composite identities, some of which might either be regarded as tokens of tolerance and inclusion, or be considered (by others) as potential threats for the cohesion of the nation? Transnational Networks and the British Empire (Ca. 18-20th centuries)
This workshop intends to bring together research scholars of history and affiliated fields working on transnational networks fostered through the British Empire. We wish to focus on how certain forms of the “empire”, the “colony”, and the “outside” mutually constituted each other. Such an approach, we believe, could illumine the dense transnational convergences that shape the political, the economic, the social, and the cultural in various locations simultaneously.

Radiohead’s musical, cultural, and political legacies
Following a symposium held at Rennes 2 University last may, further contributions (in English or French) are now sought in order to publish a wide-ranging, peer-reviewed collection of articles appraising OK Computer’s musical, cultural and political legacy twenty years after its release. The aim of this publication is to bring together contributions from scholars who wish to confront Radiohead’s work with their own disciplinary methodologies, including (but not limited to) musicology, sociology, art history, political science, literature, cultural studies or even economics.

Literature, arts and societies in the British Isles, 19th, 20th, 21st centuries
Ce colloque prolonge les travaux de deux séminaires communs aux laboratoires « Cultures anglo-saxonnes » (CAS, université Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès) et Études montpelliéraines du monde anglophone (EMMA, université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3), portant respectivement sur la littérature et les arts, et sur la civilisation britannique. Son objectif sera de balayer le champ thématique ouvert par l’articulation des notions de singularité et de solidarité, de mobiliser les outils critique et théoriques nécessaires pour l’explorer, et d’affiner notre compréhension de la littérature, des arts et des sociétés des îles britanniques aux XIX-XX-XXIe siècles.

Women in the public space, 1800-1939
Great Britain, Ireland, Empire and Commonwealth
“The Angel in the House” is the image most commonly retained of British women in the nineteenth century. This reductive and repressive ideal, emerging from values propagated by the literary, religious, medical political discourses of the time, still persists today in the collective unconscious. Although this model has increasingly been questioned by researchers in the humanities, the focus has tended to be on the beginning of the 20th century. This one-day conference aims to pursue this still neglected area, bringing the Victorian and Edwardian woman further out of her “cloister” or “sphere”, and exploring the destinies of those women who occupied the public space in Great Britain, Ireland and, by extension, the Empire: activists, explorers, artists, writers and sportswomen to name but a few.

Cette journée d'étude portera sur l’histoire transnationale des relations et échanges franco-britanniques au XVIIIe siècle. Nous aborderons les thèmes des échanges culturels, intellectuels, politiques et économiques entre la France et la Grande-Bretagne, dans le but de dresser un bilan des nouvelles approches historiographiques, tout en tentant de contribuer à l’élargissement de ce champ florissant de recherches. L’atelier sera transnational en pratique aussi : il réunira en effet des spécialistes d’Amérique du Nord et de la Grande Bretagne, ainsi que des historiens français.

Changing the world - urban experimentation in the United Kingdom (19th-21st centuries)
Le Royaume-Uni offre depuis longtemps un terreau fertile pour les utopies et expérimentations urbaines. De Utopia de Thomas More en 1516 aux New Towns des années 1950 et 1960 en passant par News from Nowhere de William Morris en 1890, la société britannique a fourni l’inspiration à nombre de visionnaires critiques de la société contemporaine afin de formuler des projets sociétaux autres. Cette journée d'études s’intéressera aux projets mis en œuvre en milieu urbain depuis le XIXe siècle pour transformer celui-ci et parfois, au-delà, la société britannique dans son ensemble.

As a band who has garnered critical and commercial success without forsaking their taste for musical experimentation and subversive, yet poetic, lyrics, Radiohead offer multiple facets to their listeners and to popular music scholars alike. Nevertheless, only a handful of academic studies have, to this day, been devoted their work, including The Music and Art of Radiohead (Tate, 2005).

On 18 September 2014, precisely seventeen years after agreeing by a very considerable majority (74.3%) to the British Government’s proposal to set up in Edinburgh a Parliament with legislative powers in areas such as education and health care, Scottish voters said "No" by a majority of 55,3% to the question posed by the Scottish Government, namely “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

La matinée sera consacrée à l’étude du cadre historique et social des années 1960 en Grande-Bretagne ; l’après-midi, les interventions porteront sur les aspects spécifiquement musicaux (influences, techniques d’enregistrement et de composition, etc.). Des prestations musicales des étudiants du département de musique alterneront avec les communications des intervenants.

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?
Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Rencontre annuelle régulière le Festival international de géographie se veut un évènement à la fois scientifiquement très rigoureux et accessible au plus large public possible. Au cours de ses trois journées, plus de 10.000 personnes assistent aux conférences, tables-rondes, expositions, démonstrations, etc. Les contributions émanant de tous les champs des sciences sociales sont les bienvenues. Elles peuvent traiter soit du thème de l'année (Habiter la terre) soit du pays invité (les Îles britanniques) et prendre diverses formes : conférence personnelle, présentation d'un ouvrage, d'un film documentaire, de posters scientifiques, d'un programme informatique, d'une dégustation commentée au salon de la gastronomie. Le FIG se déroulera du 3 au 5 octobre 2014.

Franco-British history seminar (2012-2013)
Le séminaire franco-britannique d’histoire est organisé depuis 2000 à l’Université Paris IV, maintenant en partenariat avec l’Institute of Historical Research de Londres (qui propose les communications en podcasts sur son site web) et le Groupe d’histoire intellectuelle de l’université Paris VIII. Il accueille tous les ans une série de chercheurs britanniques et français pour une présentation de leurs travaux récents sur l’histoire générale du monde britannique en histoire médiévale, moderne et contemporaine. Passe ! Mot d'enfance qui renvoie aux premiers échanges d'un temps perdu chéri par l'art, mot ludique entre tous qui rappelle que la création artistique ne va pas sans jeu, « Passe ! » s’inscrit dans notre questionnement sur les déclencheurs inattendus de l’acte créatif. Cette nouvelle journée d'études d'e-LLA s'intéressera aux influences non réciproques qui passent inaperçues, soit qu'elles appartiennent à des genres mineurs, soit que leur furtivité ne leur permette pas de s'inscrire dans la postérité, soit que les créateurs et les penseurs eux-mêmes n'en aient pas conscience. Notre réflexion s'attachera à observer comment la création peut naître de ces influences fugaces, comment ce qui semble inconséquent peut se révéler indispensable dans le processus créatif.
