Narrative folklore in becoming: persistance and innovations
In a comparative perspective on the very long distance, the conference invites specialists in the field of Alpine narrative, western, central and eastern, to discuss with their colleagues who work on the Pyrenees and the Himalayas, via the Corsica, the Apennines or the Balkans. The main aim is to draw up new reflections on the evolution of these narrative practices and to understand their changing, profoundly heterogeneous, but at the same time universal.

Artistic Activism in India (History, Practice, Paradigm and Circulation)
“Artivism” encompasses artistic actions, which tackle social and political issues, reviving agitational practises defined in resistance to the planetary ideological hegemony they refer to as neoliberalism. This resurgent awareness of the political nature of artistic creation questions consensual discourses on the neutrality of art and aesthetics, often confined in their "autonomy" and impervious to the disorders of the world. Within artistic activism a dialectic between two entities, traditionally perceived as being of a different nature, is played out: on the one hand the field of art (too often defined as autonomous, with no other functionality than its own) and on the other hand in the field of politics and social activities on the other hand (thought out as a praxis of the exercise of the power in an organized society). The central question posed by artistic activism could be stated in this way: How can we evaluate the capacity of art (visual arts, performing arts, literature, theatre, dance, video art, cinema, etc.) to function as social and political protest?

En quoi le spectacle cinématographique fait-il communauté ? Doit-il être considéré comme une instance de division ou un moteur consensuel au sein de celles-ci ? Comment se forgent les publics en situation minoritaire ? Il s’agira de questionner côte à côte, parfois d’un seul tenant, deux types de processus : les phénomènes d’homogénéisation culturelle et ceux de coexistence, forcée ou consentie, entre des groupes multiples au sein d’un même territoire en explorant le large éventail de pratiques collectives politiques et sociales émergeant au sein et en marge des espaces de projection animée.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters
The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Theories and the uses of emotions
La première journée d’étude du projet DELI sur la performance de la littérature, tenue le 15 décembre 2016, a réuni des chercheurs de différentes disciplines et aires linguistiques autour de thématiques liées aux usages politiques de la performance en Asie du Sud. Les pistes de réflexion interdisciplinaires que cette première journée a permis d’ouvrir ont notamment fait apparaître l’importance des liens entre émotion, performance et mobilisation politique, du Telangana jusqu’au Sindh. Dans le prolongement de cette première journée, nous nous proposons de poursuivre la réflexion sur la place et la fonction des émotions dans la performance littéraire en Asie du Sud, tant au niveau théorique que pratique.

Modes of authority and aesthetic channels in South Asia and Insulindia
Séminaire EHESS (CASE/CEIAS)
L’art, dans ses manifestations matérielles et immatérielles, est souvent associé à des modes d’autorité variés, d’ordre politique, religieux ou autres. De l’Asie du Sud à l’Insulinde, les formes et les conduites esthétiques, qu’elles soient graphiques, plastiques, musicales, chorégraphiques, théâtrales, narratives ou le plus souvent combinées, contribuent à établir différents types de légitimité. Au cours du temps, elles ont fait l’objet de nombreux processus de circulation, valorisation, dévalorisation, interdiction, invention, réinvention, réappropriation, émulation. Quelquefois censurées, elles ont aussi suscité résistances et contrepouvoirs. Le séminaire convoque plusieurs disciplines des sciences sociales pour penser la relation entre le fait esthétique et l’autorité de l’Asie du Sud à l’Insulinde.

Ce numéro de Géographie et cultures porte sur l’iconographie de l’Inde dans le contexte de la mondialisation. Les textes pourront aborder les représentations de l’Inde dans une perspective à la croisée de la culture, de l’économie et de la politique ou traiteront de tel ou tel aspect de la culture indienne, dans ses aspects les plus contemporains comme dans une optique géo-historique, à l’échelle nationale, régionale ou locale.

This is a call for papers from the historians of the University of La Réunion, members of the Research centre for studies on Indian Ocean societies (Centre de recherches et d’études sur les Sociétés de l’océan Indien-CRESOI) and the Indian Ocean Research Unit/Societies and Spaces (Unité de recherches Océan Indien/Espaces et sociétés) with the aim of publishing a collective work on the theme of women travellers in the Indian Ocean during the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century.

Project for an encyclopedia/dictionary of Indian literature (DELI)
La première journée d’étude du projet « Dictionnaire encyclopédique des littératures de l'Inde » (DELI) se propose de mener une réflexion commune sur ce que nous entendons par « littératures de l’Inde ». Comme cela est clairement apparu lors de précédentes discussions, l’expression pose en particulier des problèmes aigus de délimitation. Si « l’Inde » ne désigne pas une entité géographique et politique nettement et durablement définie, le critère des « langues indiennes » n’est guère moins problématique et la notion de littérature telle qu’elle a été élaborée en Occident depuis le XIXe siècle impose à la production littéraire des divisions qui lui sont largement étrangères.

Le séminaire annuel Jeunes Chercheurs de l’AJEI (Association Jeunes Études Indiennes) a pour objectifs la mise en relation de jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur l'Asie du Sud, qu'ils soient étudiants en master, doctorants ou post-doctorants, ainsi que la rencontre avec des chercheurs plus confirmés, autour de diverses thématiques. Cette année, pour la quatorzième édition, l'AJEI poursuit sa réflexion avec le thème « Normes, textes et pratiques en Asie du Sud », envisagé dans un cadre pluridisciplinaire, et qui pourra concerner à la fois les chercheurs s’intéressant à l’Asie du Sud contemporaine, et les spécialistes du monde indien « ancien ».

Second Transculturalités study day
Pourquoi mettre en scène aujourd’hui des fables animalières ? Cette journée de recherche sera consacrée à une réflexion critique sur les enjeux esthétiques et politiques de cette forme artistique contemporaine liée au théâtre, à la danse, à la musique, aux marionnettes, à la poésie, aux arts de la rue et aux pratiques performatives. Les participants sont en grande partie des enseignants chercheurs et des artistes venus spécialement de l'Inde ou travaillant en Europe sur des formes théâtrales indiennes. Il s’agira de questionner un ensemble de frontières : celles des cultures minoritaires, des politiques culturelles ou postcoloniales, et des catégories esthétiques. La mise en scène de l'animal et de son langage corporel, à partir des codes propres aux théâtres indiens permet-elle d’exprimer des problèmes actuels de société ?

Islam and Regional Cultures in Pakistan
CEIAS conference
With the hope of throwing new light on the transformations of Pakistani society, this one-day conference intends to move the focus away from two dominant discourses on Pakistan : that is, on the one hand, the security discourse of political and media circles that reduces Pakistan to a state on the fringe of failure, trying to cope with radical Islam and terrorism; and, on the other hand, Pakistan’s official nationalism, which rests on a unitary conception of the nation that disregards the cultural and religious diversity of the country, stressing instead Islam and Urdu as national unifiers while relegating regional cultures to folklore. This conference hopes to partly fill this gap by inviting participants to illustrate the complex, lived experience of Islam in Pakistan, the identity component of religious practices that do not fit in the dominant norm, and their inscription in local political and ethnic relations. Papers would ideally use first-hand observation and/or analyses of cultural productions to examine circumscribed case studies.

Censorship, Emotions and Cultural Regulation in South Asia
This workshop aims at exploring issues of literary and artistic censorship in South Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) by focusing on the way anticipated "hurt" often justifies the policing and regulation of the artistic sphere (cinema, visual arts, literature). Our point of departure is, in the words of Arjun Appadurai, the observation that culture is today the field "where fantasies of purity, authenticity, borders and security can be enacted" and that the same censors patrol the boundaries of politics and aesthetics (Coetzee). In the Indian subcontinent "hurt feelings" are often reactivated or cultivated, staged and mass-mediatised to claim recognition and legitimacy in the public sphere, to require compensation or "redressal". Many artists, writers and academics point to a politics of ultra-sensitivity and a thriving "marketplace of outrage". Our objective in this workshop is to question the vocabulary, topicality and tangibility of "hurt" in the public sphere on these issues of artistic regulation in South Asia, and to understand what it means to say that words or images wound.

Souvent présentés comme des pays du mariage arrangé, ou du mariage d’enfants, de dures pratiques envers les veuves ou, plus récemment pour l’Inde, d’un pays de la « culture du viol », ces journées de rencontres cherchent à soulever le voile sur ces réalités contrastées en Asie du Sud, et à comprendre le contexte social, anthropologique et culturel de toute l’économie de la rencontre amoureuse. Finalement, qu’en est-il réellement aujourd’hui, dans l’Inde contemporaine du XXIe siècle ? Quelles sont les normes sociales en matière de sexualité et de mariage ? Quels sont les codes amoureux, sociaux, littéraires et iconographiques ? Comment, et par qui, sont-ils transgressés ?

Love, sexuality and marriage: images, fantasies and rupture in Southern Asia in the 21st century
Lors de ces journées dédiées à l'amour, à la sexualité et au mariage en Asie du Sud, un panel sera consacré aux liens entre internet, pornographie, vie amoureuse et intime. Les transformations technologiques, telles que l'apparition des chaînes câblées, de la téléphonie mobile et d'internet influent sur l’esthétique des films certes, mais c’est également toute une économie de la rencontre amoureuse et du rapport au corps qui s’en trouve modifiée. Ces observations sont à mettre en rapport avec la consommation accrue d’images pornographiques au sein de la population et l’éroticisation toujours plus importante des corps féminin et masculin. Ce panel étudiera spécifiquement le cas des nouveaux médias (NTIC) et de leur impact sur la sphère de l'intime en Asie du sud.
