Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era

International PhD Contract 2020-2023

Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

La journée d’études « Tuer les pères : Femmes derrière la caméra dans les films de famille » propose une réflexion collective autour des images d’amateur tournées en famille. En affirmant et en perpétuant l’institution familiale dans sa configuration patriarcale, nucléaire et hétérosexuelle, le film de famille a contribué à reproduire les codes et les hiérarchies de genre et de sexualité de la société bourgeoise. En concevant le cinéma d’amateur comme une « technologie de genre », les communications porteront sur les images réalisées par des femmes-amatrices afin de découvrir et décortiquer leur propre « regard familial ».

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

Femininity and masculinity in Spanish series

Cultural industries and assignations of gender

La fiction sérielle en Espagne a déjà une longue histoire. Elle commence dans la deuxième moitié du XIX^e siècle avec les romans feuilletons publiés dans la presse, dont le lectorat était aussi bien masculin que féminin. Les premières fictions sérielles espagnoles datent de la fin des années 1950 et leur identité est étroitement liée à ce contexte historique. TVE, la télévision nationale franquiste, est fondée en 1956 ; elle apparaît très vite au régime comme un formidable outil de propagande. Ainsi, Jaime de Armiñan crée les séries Galería de maridos en 1959 puis, devant le succès de cette première galerie de portraits de jeunes mariés, Galería de esposas en 1960 qui met en scène des modèles féminins en accord avec une idéologie national-catholique qui promeut la domesticité (modèle de « el ángel del hogar », ou la fée du logis).

Contemporary developments in the increasingly intertwined fields of philosophy and performance call for a renewed inquiry into the question of repetition. With its unique critique of ideology arising from a synthesis of German Idealism and Lacanian psychoanalysis, the Ljubljana School (Dolar, Zupančič, Žižek et al.) continues to furnish important theorisations of repetition and performance as they pertain to subjectivity and the political. One of the primary aims of “Repetition/s” will be to investigate and develop the usefulness of the Ljubljana School’s theorisations for the emerging field of Performance Philosophy.

Facts and Values in Aesthetics: Contemporary Stakes and Approaches

In a text entitled The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays (2004), Hilary Putnam argues convincingly against a classic opposition which does not serve philosophical reflection positively. Putnam’s analysis mostly focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge, but one can legitimately extend it to other fields, starting with that of aesthetics, which sooner or later is confronted with the question of whether one defends or rejects the dichotomy. Keeping or rejecting it implies reasons to do so, but often these reasons remain implicit, most especially in aesthetics.

Le but de cette nouvelle problématique du séminaire, sera de s’interroger à la fois sur les créations et sur leurs auteur-e-s, ce dans une perspective genrée : seront donc envisagées les constructions proposées du masculin et du féminin, mais également les différentes formes par lesquelles s’ébauchent, s’affirment ou s’opposent les conceptions des deux sexes ainsi que les variations du désir. Outre le texte, le rôle de l’image et des illustrations dans la construction des identités genrées et la pérennisation des stéréotypes seront envisagés.
