Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology

Domestic accumulation, decluttering, and the stuff of kinship in anthropological perspective

We invite submissions of abstracts considering the following sorts of questions: What is the relationship between storage and the labor of kinship? What kinds of possessions are sources of obligation? Which are experienced as social or animate beings? What social practices and spatial processes surround waste, excess, and the riddance of objects from the home? How might local ethnographic concepts like hau orbrol inform the anthropological understanding of attachment to possessions, recycling, or the circulation of second-hand objects? When is accumulation a valued social practice, and when is it morally suspect? How is the space of storage constructed in relationship to the social space of the home, and how might this reflect on the local category of stored things? We invite authors to consider how practices such as storage, stockpiling, and purging of belongings can be approached anthropologically in order to provide both nuanced ethnographic depth and broader cross-cultural and historical perspective. Interdisciplinary perspectives are also welcome.

The event is part of the activities of the Research Committees (CI) of the Spanish Federation of Sociology (FES), which includes the Sociology of Food Research Committee. This group brings together researchers into food and eating at the intersection of health, culture, consumption, policy, and agricultural systems.

The three-day conference aims to investigate how television programmes in their multiplicity approached issues like medical progress and its limits, healthy behaviour or new forms of exercise by adapting them to TV formats and programming...The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats expressed and staged bodies, health and fitness from local, regional, national and international perspectives. How spectators were invited not only to be TV consuming audiences, but how shows and TV set-ups integrated and sometimes pretended to transform the viewer into a participant of the show. TV programmes spread the conviction that subjects had the ability to shape their own body.

The European Research Council advanced grant programme “The healthy self as body capital: individuals, market-based societies and body politics in visual twentieth century Europe (BodyCapital)” led by Christian Bonah (université de Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (MPIHD, Berlin) on the understanding of body capital and its history, through the twentieth century history of visual mass media (film, TV, Internet) and inédits (amateur, family and private visuals) is now accepting applications for a post-doctoral researcher position for a project related to post-1945 Great Britain.

How do contemporary family eat? European comparisons

From provision to culinary practices

Dans ce colloque, nous proposons de mettre en perspectives les pratiques alimentaires familiales, et les normes sociales qui les régissent, avec des approches macro, mezzo et micro-sociales des réseaux d’approvisionnement pour comprendre les logiques d’action à l’œuvre dans différentes situations d’alimentation quotidiennes et éventuellement festives. Les communications comportant une dimension comparatiste seront particulièrement bienvenues. Le terme de famille sera entendu ici au sens large qui va du couple sans enfants aux personnes dont les enfants ont quitté le domicile familial en passant par toutes les formes de composition, typologie et recomposition familiale.

Food Security and the Contemporary World

In view of the interpretations suggested by all these studies, the special issue of Contemporanea aims to engage in a reflection on food security in the widest sense of the term, which includes the political and economic choices made by institutions, relations between states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, the connection between the availability of food and international stability. We also intend to look at the circulation of cultures and practices within the transnational space that historically defines the relationship between food, health, individual and collective well-being.

L'élevage est aujourd'hui à la croisée des chemins. Privé de subventions, le modèle industriel breton s'effondre ; les défenseurs des animaux revendiquent pour les animaux un statut incompatible avec l'élevage ; les industriels des biotechnologies investissent dans la production de viandes in-vitro. L'élevage pourra-t-il survivre à ces bouleversements ? Comment peut-il témoigner de sa différence ? Comment expliquer la place de la mort des animaux dans le travail ? Comment défendre d'autres systèmes d'élevage ? C'est à ces questions que nous essaierons de répondre lors de ce colloque.

La santé en chiffres (XXe siècle) : des sciences sociales aux politiques sociales

Cette journée d'étude s'inscrit dans le séminaire annuel de l'équipe « Santé et société » du laboratoire FRAMESPA, UMR 5136, CNRS-Univ. Toulouse II. Son objectif est d'explorer quelques facettes des liens entre la construction d'un savoir statistique en matière de santé et la (re)définition des politiques sociales et sanitaires au XXe siècle. Les questions abordées porteront notamment sur la configuration sociale de la production des statistiques sanitaires au cours du siècle, le rôle et l'attitude des médecins (France et Espagne) après la Seconde Guerre mondiale vis à vis d'une approche chiffrée de la santé, les circulations entre outils de connaissance et outil de gestion institutionnelle ou de crise en matière sanitaire. Des exposés généraux seront complétés par plusieurs études de cas.
