APAD Conference
After the Roskilde conference in 2018, devoted to mobility and migration, the Association for the Anthropology of Social Change and Development (APAD) proposes for its 2020 edition, co-organized with the Department of Anthropology and African Studies of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FSHS) of the University of Lomé (Togo), to focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries' circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome.

15th Association for the anthropology of social change and development (APAD) Conference
The 2020 edition of the Association for the anthropology of social change and development (APAD) conference will focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries’ circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome. We also invite visual anthropologists and filmmakers to propose panels or submit films for public screenings.

Locating negative affects in post-reform China
This panel takes the prevalence of positivity in post-reform China as an invitation to investigate its opposites: the variety of negative ordinary affects that can be viewed as ensuing from state-induced “situations of restricted agency”. What can we learn from the various forms of negativity that morph out of the socio-political circumstances of post-reform China, and how to tread a fine line between the risk of romanticization and analytical dismissal? Under what conditions do the expression and performance of negative affects constitute “a manifestation of autonomy from state directives” in the context of pervasive “happiness” campaigns? Or is their work ambivalent, if not problematic, especially when they come to be associated with specific marginalized groups?

We are looking for a doctoral student to be part of the research project “Visions of the Social: The Transformation of State Planning in Postcolonial India” which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The PhD student will examine local implications of financialized forms of social service provision in North India. Instituted violences and terrors
The world terrorism is all over the media. Yet, it covers many different forms of violence and is difficult to define either on legal, political or sociological bases. Terror may be defined and claimed as a mode of action whereas designating opponents as terrorists has become a common way for many rulers to disqualify them. The intentions of perpetrators of violences are often confusing: it increases the populations’ fears and allows States to establish a governance of crisis on the basis of security purposes. How can anthropology help to analyze such configurations?

The processes of politico-religious assignation in the Syrian conflict
Cette journée d'étude sera consacrée à la violence des processus d’assignation politico-religieux dans le conflit syrien. L’État syrien, ainsi que différentes factions du camp de l’opposition ont dès le début de la révolte en 2011 entrepris de mobiliser les individus sur la base de leurs identités confessionnelles et/ou ethniques. Observable chez les « minoritaires » alaouites, druzes et chrétiens sommés de soutenir le régime de Bashar al-Assad, cette politique a également des conséquences délétères au sein de la « majorité » sunnite. Ne se cantonnant pas au domaine de la mobilisation politico-militaire, elle s’accompagne de la tentative d’imposer par la contrainte une réforme morale de chaque individu, ainsi qu’une homogénéisation des croyances, des pratiques et des manières d’être « citoyen », « musulman », « alaouite », etc.

Modes of authority and aesthetic channels in South Asia and Insulindia

L’art, dans ses manifestations matérielles et immatérielles, est souvent associé à des modes d’autorité variés, d’ordre politique, religieux ou autres. De l’Asie du Sud à l’Insulinde, les formes et les conduites esthétiques, qu’elles soient graphiques, plastiques, musicales, chorégraphiques, théâtrales, narratives ou le plus souvent combinées, contribuent à établir différents types de légitimité. Au cours du temps, elles ont fait l’objet de nombreux processus de circulation, valorisation, dévalorisation, interdiction, invention, réinvention, réappropriation, émulation. Quelquefois censurées, elles ont aussi suscité résistances et contrepouvoirs. Le séminaire convoque plusieurs disciplines des sciences sociales pour penser la relation entre le fait esthétique et l’autorité de l’Asie du Sud à l’Insulinde.

En croisant approches historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques, géographiques et économiques, ce séminaire s’attachera à mettre en évidence les permanences dans les différentes manières de faire société en Asie du Sud-Est. Cette nouvelle édition des Journées doctorales du CHSIM, dans la continuité des travaux tel que le dossier de l’Année du Maghreb 2008 sur « La fabrique de la mémoire », questionnera avec de nouvelles perspectives les thèmes itératifs de mémoire, tradition et identité. En s’intéressant aux processus de construction, ces Journées doctorales prétendent discuter des problématiques actuelles de la recherche sur le Maghreb et les pays arabes.L’aire géographique est volontairement vaste : le Nord de l'Afrique, la péninsule Arabique et le Proche-Orient. Il s’agira de mettre en regard des pays dont les contextes historiques, politiques et sociaux sont différents mais dont les questionnements sont souvent liés à la notion polysémique « arabe ».
