Death and Migration: Perspectives from the Post-Soviet Space
This dossier of Revue européenne des migrations internationales proposes to take up a research theme that has undergone a strong renewal of interest in recent years, that of death and migration. This dossier aims to shed light on an area which has been little studied from this angle (the post-Soviet space) and to develop an approach which focuses on the management of bodies 'dead in the distance' (deaths in migration, deaths due to migration). This dossier also focuses on the effects of a certain proximity to death on the practices of foresight and mutual aid (when they exist) in the migratory context, as well as their impacts on migration as a whole. Two thematic axes will guide the contributions: the first concerns the practical modalities of the management of dead bodies abroad; the second concerns mitigating and solidarity practices in relation to the proximity of death in migration.

Les tortues des Îles Galapagos, les têtes réduites de Jivaro, les neiges éternelles du Chimborazo, les chapeaux Panama… Autant de symboles mondialement connus qui ont pour point commun de venir d'Équateur. Ils interrogent les dynamiques de circulations internationales des idées, des personnes, des objets, questionnent l'exportation de la culture équatorienne à travers le monde et les processus de construction d'imaginaires sur l'Équateur dans le monde. À l'inverse, ils invitent également à s'intéresser à la manière dont ils sont perçus en Équateur, loin des arènes internationales. Ces dynamiques seront l'objet de la journée d'étude consacrée à l'Équateur et le monde. Comment l'Équateur s'expose sur la scène internationale ? Comment des mouvements internationaux ou transnationaux sont-ils appropriés, traduits, adaptés en Équateur ? Comment circulent les objets et les personnes équatorien.nes à travers le monde ? Afin de répondre à ces questions, nous proposons d'organiser la journée en trois tables rondes.

Ce dossier pour la revue franco-brésilienne Confins cherche à mettre en évidence la manière dont les débats en cours au sujet de la construction de l’espace et de concepts tels que « territoire » et « territorialité » peut contribuer à approfondir la compréhension des réalités territoriales des peuples autochtones au Brésil. Au travers de travaux fondés sur des situations territoriales variées, et ancrés dans des champs thématiques et théoriques divers, tant de la géographie que de disciplines connexes, nous souhaitons permettre un rapprochement et un dialogue fertile autour d’analyses comparatives amenant à mieux comprendre les géographies autochtones au Brésil.

Communication and digital technology in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa
The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

Mexican perspectives of France and the United States, 1821-1950
Le colloque programmé vise à analyser les représentations des voyageurs mexicains sur l'autre monde, la France et les États-Unis, pays visités par d'innombrables personnalités politiques et intellectuelles, ainsi que par des témoins anonymes, depuis l'indépendance du Mexique au milieu du XXe siècle. Nous tenterons de déchiffrer ces témoignages mexicains à caractère privé et intime (épistolaires, mémoires, journaux intimes...) sans exclure les chroniques et documents publiés dans la presse sur le monde français et américain entre 1821 et 1950. Comment ces voyageurs, touristes cosmopolites, exilés politiques, artistes en herbe, diplomates ont-ils transcrit leur vision de l'autre, français ou américain ?

Sustainable development and indigenous knowledge, climatic change, the role of museums, and artistic practices as a tool for protest
À une époque que certains qualifient d’Anthropocène, en raison de l’impact sans précédent que les activités humaines ont sur l’équilibre planétaire, les questions de développement durable n’ont jamais été si pressantes. Les communautés autochtones du monde entier apparaissent à la fois comme particulièrement vulnérables et comme des acteurs majeurs des combats contre la surexploitation des ressources, la pollution des territoires et les effets du changement climatique. Au premier rang de ces batailles les habitants du Pacifique, en particulier les artistes, redoublent d’inventivité pour dire au monde les menaces qui pèsent sur leurs îles et sur l’incroyable diversité culturelle qu’elles abritent. Etroitement liées, la perception des territoires, le dynamisme et les facultés d’adaptation des sociétés du Pacifique s’exposent dans les musées du monde ; mais souvent sans que les voix autochtones y soient suffisamment audibles.

Comment l’acquisition des savoirs devient le lieu de mise en place de stratégies d’exploitation des signes culturels locaux dans des langages globaux ? Comment la couleur, dans ses dimensions symbolique, culturelle, politique, sociale, temporelle et pratique peut se révéler un outil d’approche des problématiques d’appropriation des savoirs ?

Diasporic consciences in the Americas
Entre le lieu des origines, réel ou imaginé, et celui de l’ancrage actuel et historicisé, le discours sur l’identité diasporique se déploie dans un entre-deux culturel et sociétal qu’il s’agit d’étudier à l’aune de paradigmes scientifiques et d’expériences palpables. L’objet de ce séminaire international consiste à faire émerger de nouvelles socialités et formes d’agentivité fondées sur la conscience diasporique reliant les communautés des Amériques. Les contributions s’enrichiront d’une rencontre interdisciplinaire conciliant des domaines variés : arts et science de l’art, linguistique et littérature, anthropologie, archéologie, ethnologie, sociologie, histoire et géographie ; toute démarche relevant du champ des sciences sociales et humaines est la bienvenue.

Peoples and cultures of the world
In this interdisciplinary conference we aim to study different peoples and cultures of the world by taking into account the various ways peoples and cultures define themselves and others, thus shaping their identies. We aim to explore the complex relationships being established between cultural dynamics and identites in their spatial and/or chronological dimensions. We would like to focus on the variety of cultures in the world, on their diversity comparatively studied, but we are also specially inclined to discuss top-down or externally imposed politics and the types of resistance used by natives to escape these hegemonic strategies. We invite papers that analyse peoples and cultures (social communities, ethnic groups, indigenous minorities, etc.) considering their specific features and differences, possibly taking into account the theorizations underlying the construction and deconstruction of colllective identities. In this sense, we are interested in the role played by the scholar analyzing different cultures and their spatial dynamics, often fluid and somewhat controversial according to a political perspective.

La « transition » existe-t-elle lorsqu’on vit, séjourne ou travaille de part et d’autre d’une frontière ? Les usages de ce terme ne sont-ils que rhétoriques, se résumant à une formule oratoire ayant l’art d’agir sur les représentations ? Qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour les territoires concernés et pour ceux qui les traversent ? Que dit-on de la « transition » dans ces milieux parcourus par les mobilités transfrontalières ? Quels sont les différents enjeux, les politiques et les contradictions qui traversent ces déplacements aux interstices ? Quel(s) défi(s) posent ces formes d’habiter multiples et mobiles ? Comment ces pratiques et les réseaux translocaux qui les portent mettent-ils à l’épreuve les démarches de « transition » ? Accélérateurs, inhibiteurs, quel(s) rôle(s) sont portés par les projets transfrontaliers ? En quoi peuvent-ils catalyser un devenir commun des territoires de proximité ?

Nouvelles Dynamiques Africaines (NDA) est une revue pluridisciplinaire axée sur l’expertise et disponible sur le site des éditions L'Harmattan. Nous sollicitons votre collaboration pour la parution du quatrième numéro de la revue, prévue en avril 2019. Consacré à la santé mentale en Afrique et dans la diaspora, il fera état des spécificités de la pratique récente et actualisée des disciplines de la santé mentale dans le contexte socio-anthropologique du continent africain et de sa diaspora. Le deuxième volet proposera des essais d'élaborations analytiques des répercussions du climat socio-politico-économique africain sur la santé mentale des populations.

L’idéologie de la virilité, qui n’est pas propre aux pays du monde arabe, existant dans plusieurs cultures du monde, impose le plus souvent un comportement standardisé, contraignant et limitant. Le plus souvent, ce comportement se façonne en rapport avec l’autre sexe, dans la mesure où il pose des limites aux relations, mais aussi en rapport avec les représentants du même sexe, car il engendre une nécessité de reconnaissance et d’intégration. Par ailleurs, l’émergence du sujet ou de l’individu ne va pas de soi dans des sociétés qui sont plutôt enclines à privilégier la collectivité, l’appartenance communautaire. Il est donc intéressant de poser la question de la manière dont les concepts de virilité et de féminité agissent sur les individus/collectivités. On parle souvent du manque de liberté des femmes dans les pays arabo-musulmans, en raison du poids de la tutelle masculine. Mais pourrait-il y avoir une véritable liberté masculine dans un tel contexte qui cultive une dérisoire supériorité des « mâles » ?

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

La journée d’études « Cultures, arts et littératures périphériques dans le Brésil contemporain » se propose, par une approche interdisciplinaire, d’interroger les notions de périphérie / centre, marges, frontières dans ses modalités artistiques variées dans le Brésil hyper contemporain. Il s’agit notamment d’identifier, de comparer et de croiser ce phénomène et ces productions artistiques périphériques dans d’autres villes / espaces brésiliens.
