Epidemics, History and the Environment: Crossing Academic Boundaries
European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference (2019)
This panel - epidemics, climate and history – for the European Society for Environmental History 10th Biennial Conference in Tallinn (2019) aims to explore specific climatic/environmental and institutional factors that shaped both the way in which plagues lato sensu and other epidemics, including cholera, yellow fever, typhus, typhoid fever, leprosy, syphilis, etc., originated and spread as well as the consecutive significant demographic and socio-economic consequences at a local or regional scale throughout history (without geographical limitation). A particular attention will be given to original interdisciplinary approaches linking natural proxy archives and written documentary sources.

Railways and History conference

Panel for the 2nd International Conference on Food History and Cultures
Street food significantly developed over the last decade and cannot anymore be assimilated to junk and fast food -that would be the result of the frenetic pace of modern urban life- nor even to something new. This panel seeks papers that consider the many ways in which street food developed throughout history. This call for papers doesn’t aim to resume a lost world but to examine urban cultures in practice, into which street food provides and exceptional insight able to shed a new light on our present foodways.

This international scientific conference is organized as part of the Excellence Laboratory (LABex) project called Writing a new history of Europe, supported by Irice UMR 8138, the "Identities, international relations and civilizations of Europe" unit (Paris 1 and Paris 4 Universities, National Centre for Scientific Research as CNRS), with a support from the History Committee at the French Ministry of Territorial Equality and Housing and the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy. The conference will be held in June 19th-20th 2014, at Paris, France, Grande Arche de La Défense.

The environmental and social impacts of territorial planning: historical perspectives
Bien que souvent liée aux formes de planification développées depuis le XIXe siècle, la notion d'aménagement du territoire est une réalité beaucoup plus ancienne qui renvoie aussi bien aux efforts de planification urbaine que de cadastration, de « commodification » et d’équipement des territoires ruraux ou urbains : on peut en suivre les développements depuis l’Antiquité (fondations et transformations de villes, implantation d’activités artisanales et industrielles, aménagements hydrauliques, bonifications, créations de réseaux de transport…). L’objectif de ce colloque est de mesurer l’impact de ces travaux sur le milieu et sur les populations, et d’analyser la façon dont ont été perçus les enjeux environnementaux à différentes échelles de temps et d’espace. Une attention particulière sera donnée aux acteurs des aménagements et aux réactions sociales et politiques des populations concernées.

Description and representation techniques from ancient and medieval times onwards provide an opportunity to initiate a comparison between different cities and contexts, seeking different ways of perceiving the urban whole in its full complexity. -

De la Jamais contente de 1899 à l'Autolib' ou du métro de 1900 au tramway contemporain, l'électricité a été utilisée depuis longtemps comme source d'énergie pour différentes formes de mobilité. Toutefois, alors que l'électricité est ultradominante dans les usages domestiques, les déplacements offrent un champ où elle peut paraître encore marginale. C'est donc une exploration historique des relations entre électricité et mobilité que propose ce colloque, aux échos contemporains assumés. -

Rencontre interdisciplinaire entre les chercheurs de trois équipes associées : le programme « Débordements des activités industrielles dans la cité. Études de conflits et d’interventions publiques aux XIXe et XXe siècles » (Cdhte - Cnam Paris), le Département des sites industriels du Centre d’histoire des sciences et techniques de l’Université de Liège (CHST - Liège) et le pôle « Histoire de l’environnement » des Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix à Namur. Cette rencontre entreprend de confronter les interrogations, les approches et les méthodes d’une histoire des nuisances industrielles d’hier pour une compréhension de leurs impacts économiques et sociaux d’aujourd’hui.
