As part of the 65th anniversary of the law of 6 August 1955 on the status of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, the National Archives and the French Southern and Antarctic Lands Authority [TAAF] are organising a two-day conference at the headquarters of the National Archives in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine (France - 93), on 14 and 15 December 2020. The call for papers is open to all.

The generative uses of architectural forms
La notion de château englobe de multiples réalités formelles bien souvent difficiles à classer ou échelonner avec précision dans le temps et l’espace. Le château incarne un système politique complexe : la féodalité. Il revêt des fonctions multiples, lieu de pouvoir, habitat familial, lieu de protection de quelques occupants ou refuge de la population etc. Castrum, castellum, fortia, quelles réalités bâties l’homme du Moyen Âge désigne-t-il derrière ces termes ? Nous nous questionnerons plus spécifiquement sur comment les usages et les fonctions se manifestent à travers les formes architecturales du château ? Les formes désignent ici l’ensemble des éléments architecturaux, qu’il s’agisse de la silhouette de l’édifice ou du détail d’un élément fonctionnel ou décoratif. Il s’agira donc de mettre en lumière des formes architecturales du château récurrentes ou non, qui caractérisent des coutumes propres au système féodal.

Occupying Space during Bronze and Iron Ages: From site to landscape
6th Doctoral Meetings of the European School of Protohistory of Bibracte
Archaeology and Space have always been intrinsically connected. On one hand, different attributes of the environment affected human beings forcing them to adapt their behaviour in order to succeed, while on the other, in doing so, communities have influenced their surrounding spaces by transforming them, in some cases irreversibly. As all human actions are by definition immersed in space, for this year’s meeting we have decided to approach the questions of understanding and interpreting these complex processes looking through the prism of scale on which they happen. The extent of these ranges from the processes that occur on the small levels in the spaces of archaeological sites extending to the larger levels when dealing with the narrative of cultural landscapes. Sessions will provide reflection on the social and spatial aspects of archaeological sites and landscapes and will incorporate themes related to subsistence, economy, social behaviour and ideology within the timespan of the European Bronze and Iron Ages.

Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

Fondée sur un site pittoresque, l’abbaye de l’Île-Barbe à Lyon est longtemps restée une énigme dans l’historiographie lyonnaise, baignant dans les légendes locales ou nationales. Pourtant, il s’agit du plus ancien monastère connu pour la ville de Lyon, et s’il s’inscrit dans les réseaux monastiques du quart sud-est de la Gaule, il rayonne également à une plus large échelle puisqu’on en trouve des échos jusqu’en Touraine au Ve siècle. Implantée sur une petite île fluviale du val de Saône, aux portes de la ville, elle attire voyageurs et pèlerins par le prestige de ses reliques et une statue miraculeuse de la Vierge.

Tribal societies in North Africa - 9th North African study days
IXème journée d’études nord-africaines
Les tribus africaines sont aujourd’hui pensées moins comme un groupe unitaire en opposition aux Romains que comme une réalité complexe, protéiforme, saisissable dans un cadre souple qui tient compte des découpages sociaux-économiques comme du rôle des sociétés provinciales dans l’intégration des élites tribales. Cette journée d'étude s'attachera aux découpages sociaux-économiques, ce qui permettra de réévaluer le rôle des élites tribales dans leur rapport avec les pouvoirs dominants. Il sera aussi intéressant d’étudier, les dynamiques internes des sociétés tribales à partir de leur relation aux systèmes politiques et administratifs ; les interactions avec les communautés politiques et les modalités d’intégration culturelle et religieuse aux cultures dominantes ; les usages linguistiques et onomastiques encore mal appréciés ; les figures politiques porteuses d’affirmations identitaires contemporaines (Jugurtha, Tacfarinas...).

The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium
Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

Les Journées lotharingiennes, organisées tous les deux ans à Luxembourg depuis 1980, sont consacrées à l’étude d’une thématique d’histoire médiévale dans le cadre de la Lotharingie, c'est-à-dire l’espace situé entre la Meuse et le Rhin d'une part, les Vosges et la Mer du Nord de l'autre. La prochaine session, qui aura lieu les 30 et 31 octobre 2014, aura pour thème La forêt dans la Lotharingie médiévale et traitera de la place de la forêt en Lotharingie, de l’époque carolingienne au début des Temps modernes, dans une perspective multidisciplinaire et comparative.

La question du vin et du lieu peut entremêler en effet des notions complexes, parfois contradictoires ou confuses en faisant jouer tout à la fois et de manière non exhaustive : le lien à l’origine, l’authenticité, le respect de la nature et des traditions par les bonnes pratiques, les normes de qualité par les appellations, le patrimoine et son identité etc.

The very quick recent development of archaeological and epigraphic work in Saudi Arabia brought deep changes in our knowledge of the Arabian Peninsula — which until the middle of the 2000's was only based on research on the periphery: Kuwait, Bahrayn, Qatar, The Emirates, Oman, and Yemen. That development reveals how wide the gaps are, of the interpretative frame in particular, for broad geo-historical segments. That is true especially for what is generally called Late Antiquity (4th- early 7th centuries AD), and here "Late Pre-Islamic" or even in local religious terms jâhîliyah, "ignorance" — a term which actually reflects correctly the state of knowledge. The amount of data collected within less than ten years within a large North-Western half of the Peninsula makes possible to see that except for the extreme North (current Joradanian border and Jawf Oasis) the Christianity does not penetrate and Byzantiums unifying power is absent. One is even unable to name what the field teams are dealing with. The proposed doctoral work must produce the state of that question, for which there if a rich evidence in stratigraphy, architecture, objects, and even epigraphy due to the recent demonstration of the Nabataean-Arabic continuum. The comparison with the Byzantine and christianized areas of the extreme North must be one of the leading strands but no way the only one, since the heart of the subject lyes, on the contrary, in the currently unnamed culture(s) of the Peninsula itself.

For the last decades, the studies carried out along the Italian coasts have been a favoured field of research, concerning some specific aspects of the antique and mediaeval society, its links with the sea, and with other men beyond the sea. Within that context, the coasts of Lazio and Tuscany reveal themselves to be particularly interesting: they are the witnesses of a wealthy business network, along the coast lines, centred on the via Aurelia, and the numerous harbours and mooring areas, used since ancient days. This colloquium is dedicated to reopening a debate among experts, thanks to the contributions of various research approaches, and with a particular attention to the Tuscia area.

Les recherches épigraphiques et archéologiques de terrain ont progressé depuis plusieurs décennies, aussi bien en Grèce, qu’en Asie Mineure ou au Proche-Orient, qu’il s’agisse d’Antioche de Pisidie, de Dion, de Philippes, de Patras ou de Bérytos, pour les plus fameuses d’entre elles. En vue de mieux connaître l’histoire des colonies romaines d’Orient, une approche territoriale de la vie des communautés est primordiale en raison de la nature socio-politique de ces entités imposées à une échelle régionale par un pouvoir central. Plusieurs perspectives peuvent être proposées afin de questionner leur histoire.

La journée d'études sur les fouilles de Famars, près de Valenciennes (département du Nord), s'inscrit dans le contexte d'un chantier de fouilles mené depuis novembre 2011 à l'occasion de nouveaux aménagements sur le campus de l'université de Valenciennes et du Hainaut-Cambrésis. Elle est l'occasion de faire un bilan sur les connaissances archéologiques au sujet du vicus Fanum Martis, que les fouilles archéologiques récentes présentent de plus en plus comme une agglomération gallo-romaine importante, et qui était étudié depuis le début du XIXe siècle.

2nd Rural History Summer School
“Rural Archaeology and Rural History – Middle Ages – Modern era” The theme chosen for this 2013 edition of the Rural History Summer School will allow us to consider the relationship between rural archeology and history. More than the oppositions, it seems it is the relationships, the combinations and the intertwining of disciplines, that need to be questioned through the different scientific traditions in Europe (England, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy). This European overview will be the major focus of this 2013 summer school. The emphasis will also be put on the recent development of post-medieval archaeology, practiced in England and Italy for example, but still embryonic in several European countries. The interrogations will dwell on rescue and commercial Archeology and on its methods and results.
