  "Fast life". The 19th century faced with the acceleration of time and history

  9th congress of the Société des études romantiques et dix-neuviémistes

  Du 25 au 27 janvier se tiendra à Paris, à la Fondation Singer-Polignac, le IX^e congrès de la Société des études romantiques et dix-neuviémistes, sur le thème suivant : « Vivre vite ». Le XIX^e siècle face à l'accélération du temps et de l'histoire. L’appel à communications est ouvert à des propositions relevant de la littérature française, de la littérature comparée, de l’histoire, de la philosophie, de l’histoire des arts et de la musicologie. Dans un souci d’analyse globale des phénomènes, on privilégiera des approches transversales, plutôt que des études monographiques.

  The Italians in Lyon: urban space, national identities and representations

  Pendant un siècle (1860-1960), l’immigration italienne a constitué, une part majeure des flux migratoires vers l’agglomération lyonnaise. Aussi, son histoire, qui est encore largement à écrire, peut offrir de multiples points de vue pour mieux comprendre la place assignée aux immigrants dans l’espace urbain de l’agglomération lyonnaise et au sein du monde ouvrier, pour se pencher sur l’émergence et la construction des réactions de rejet et de violence qu’ils ont pu subir, et étudier les représentations multiformes dont ils ont été l’objet au cours de la période.

  Persistent Spaces

  Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city

  This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18^th and the 19^th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

  Urban mysteries in the 19th century: circulations, transfers, appropriations

  Littérature, histoire, médias

  Entre le 19 juin 1842 et le 15 octobre 1843, la France vit avec la parution des Mystères de Paris d’Eugène Sue dans le Journal des débats une véritable déflagration médiatique. Le romancier saisi par l’abondant courrier des lecteurs qu’il reçoit, pris par le succès de son œuvre, fait considérablement évoluer son récit et enrichit le roman des bas-fonds urbains et de la pègre destiné à la bourgeoisie d’une véritable réflexion sociale et politique. Le roman est publié en de multiples éditions, adapté sur scène et décliné en produits dérivés. Mais ce premier succès de masse de la littérature n’est pas seulement le phénomène médiatique le plus important que la France ait jamais connu à cette époque, c’est aussi un premier phénomène de globalisation culturelle.

  Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City

  Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.
