  Reconstruction and Resettlement in the Wake of War

  This two-day workshop will examine the interlinked processes of post-war urban reconstruction and population resettlement. Extending chronologically from the American Civil War to the mid-twentieth century, and covering a broad array of geographic locations, from North America to Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, it explores how war-torn urban environments have been rebuilt and repopulated. From the mid-nineteenth century, towns and cities increasingly became the pivots of large-scale military action, and urban residents from Atlanta to Paris, Warsaw and Tokyo felt the full force of modern weaponry. But as destruction and displacement gave way to reconstruction and resettlement, the residents of these war-afflicted urban centres faced further challenges. By exploring how they returned and reconstructed their shattered homes, this workshop seeks to understand the long-term effects of conflict on the social dynamics of communities.

  Décapitalisations

  Contestations, exils, transferts, bicéphalie…des villes capitales, XIXe-XXIe siècle

  Le colloque « décapitalisations », organisé par le Centre d’histoire du XIX^e siècle et le Centre André Chastel les 16, 17 et 18 juin 2016, concerne la perte, temporaire ou durable, par une ville du statut de capitale et les capitales de substitution. Qu’advient-il de la « capitalité » en cas de transfert des pouvoirs, de construction d’ensembles politiques unitaires, fédéraux ou supranationaux ? Quelles sont les conséquences culturelles de la décapitalisation ? Comment une ville survit-elle à sa dégradation politique et administrative ? Quel est l’impact culturel de la perte de la capitalité politique ? Quel rôle jouent les capitales historiques par rapport aux créations affichant leur modernité ? Comment s’organisent concrètement les transferts ? Comment les relations internationales pèsent-elle sur la persistance, ou non, de la « capitalité » ?

  Am Centre Marc Bloch Berlin ist zum 1. November 2012 für den Zeitraum von fünf Jahren die Stelle einer/eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin/Mitarbeiters (Postdoc) im BMBF-geförderten sozialwissenschaftlichen Projekt „Herausforderung urbane Gewalträume“, einem der drei Teilprojekte von „Saisir l'Europe - Europa als Herausforderung“ zu besetzen.
