Scholarships for Doctoral Researchers

The Kollegforschungsgruppe (KFG, a DFG-funded “Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies”) „Religion and Urbanity. Reciprocal Formations” at the Max-Weber-Kolleg of the University of Erfurt invites applications for Scholarships for Doctoral Researchers starting from January 2021 at the earliest. Scholarships are granted for a period of 12 months.

Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities
Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes
The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

Saigon, an eyewitness of history through archives
À travers une histoire riche en rebondissements au cours du XXe siècle, Saigon présente de nombreuses facettes inédites qu’il convient de mettre à jour et d’analyser. Grâce aux archives, les chercheurs redécouvrent aujourd’hui celle que l’on nommait autrefois « la perle de l’Extrême-Orient » et mesurent à la fois l’évolution et l’expansion de la ville, d’une situation coloniale à la cité-province actuelle. Pour suivre pas à pas ces transformations sociales, politiques, économiques, une très riche documentation est désormais disponible principalement en France, au Viêt-Nam et aux États-Unis. Ces sources constituent en effet le matériau de base pour entreprendre une recherche historique, géographique et plus largementen sciences sociales. Archives administratives, dessins, plans etcartes, photothèque, images fixes ou animées, institutionnelles ou privées, elles sont nombreuses et souvent dispersées. Elles constitueront le coeur de cette journée d’étude sur Saigon.

Contemporary Amman and the Right to the City
A city of four million inhabitants today, Amman’s expansion has become disproportionate to its urban history. Amman has experienced an impressive urban growth over the past fifty years, driven by forced migration and market laws. Developing from a small rural settlement at the end of the 19th century, Amman evolved into a regional crossroad at the end of the 20th century, and has become today a symbol for the consolidation of Hashemite rule, and as a result, the site of its contestation. Amman’s exceptional position among other regional capitals and its recent urban history has forced its inhabitants to create narratives concerning the city’s foundation, invent urban traditions, and negotiate ways of socialization.

Limits of the western police model in China
In the past 20 years, the Research Center on Shanghai History (ECNU) and the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) have established close cooperative relations : joint projects, joint publications, joints conferences, as well as the co-training of graduate students have become significant and regular markers of increasingly close relationships. On this basis we hope to further co-promote Shanghai and Tianjin as centers of new urban history and social order. This project will avail new archival materials (municipalities archives), memoirs of policemen, photography, illustrated journals, correspondances, police reports etc…

Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond
This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

Urbanités journal
En janvier 2016, la revue Urbanités a décidé de continuer la réflexion sur les mondes urbains chinois, entamée en 2013 avec sa série d’entretiens et d’articles sur la Chine urbaine. Des propositions d’articles, de compte-rendus de lecture ou de portfolios, quels que soient les thèmes ou terrains de recherche, sont attendus. Nous considérons que les mondes urbains situés hors de Chine continentale (Hong-Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Diaspora chinoise) mais marqués par des dynamiques politiques, culturelles, économiques et sociales liées à la présence d’acteurs ou de capitaux chinois font partie intégrante du monde chinois, et ont à ce titre leur place dans ce numéro spécial.

L’échange architectural : Europe et Extrême-Orient (1550-1950)
Ce colloque international sera l’occasion d’examiner la question des échanges opérés dans le domaine architectural entre Europe et Extrême-Orient au cours de la période 1550-1950. A priori, on peut supposer que, s’agissant de deux mondes éloignés, et entrés tardivement en contact direct et régulier, l’identification de ce qui est échangé devrait s’en trouver facilitée. Pourtant, s’il semble évident de reconnaître une forteresse néerlandaise en Indonésie, des églises jésuites en Chine, une pagode chinoise en Angleterre, ou un pavillon de thé japonais en France, il est difficile d’analyser ce qui s’est passé chaque fois, ce qui a été transmis ou emprunté, et comment cet échange a pu se produire et avoir lieu. Il est donc nécessaire de procéder à une enquête portant à la fois sur les causes et le contenu de l’échange.

Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias
Second World Urbanity: Between Capitalist and Communist Utopias seeks to investigate the history of the radical reshaping of the Soviet World (in our words - the Second World), that Ada Louise Huxtable reported on in the late 1960s. This project aims to bring together scholarly contributions on the various endeavors in the Second World to conceive, build, and inhabit a socialist cityscape that was an alternative to the segregated spaces of capitalist cities and the atomized world of suburbia. Imagining and designing urban space were undeniably powerful instruments of forging socialist modernity. Second World Urbanity pays close attention to the tensions between global challenges and locally driven agendas that made architects, planners, and ordinary dwellers alter socialist modernity according to more particular interests. -

Cette journée s’inscrit dans les actions collectives de L’UMR CITERES. Elle initie la sixième action transversale « Corps, sollicitude, santé : aux carrefours de soi, de l’autre et du monde » qui associe les équipes CoST et EMAM de CITERES travaillant sur la Construction politique et sociale des territoires et le Monde arabe et méditerranéen. Y seront soulignées les notions d'attention et de sollicitude dans des pratiques et espaces sociaux divers. Lors de cette journée, il s'agira de questionner par des regards croisés, la sollicitude, sous l’angle du carrefour entre l’intérêt pour soi et l’intérêt pour l’autre. L’attention, l’accueil ou l’assistance à l’autre est duale par l’impact possible sur soi. Intérêt ou besoin qui n’est pas uniquement corporel mais social, culturel, territorial et politique. -

La revue numérique « Urbain, trop urbain — revue de ville » lance un appel à contribution d'articles et autres objets numériques dans les champs de l'urbanisme, de l'histoire urbaine, de la littérature... Cette première revue a pour objet créer une approche pluridisciplinaire : scientifique, artistique et littéraire, sur la Shanghai contemporaine. Numéro à paraître fin août 2011. -

Beirut, paradigm of a universally latent civil war
Colloque organisé par Les Halles de Schaerbeek, en collaboration avec le Département d’architecture, d’urbanisme et de planification (ASRO) de la K.U. Leuven, avec le soutien du RITS. Si la ville de Beyrouth connut une déchirante guerre civile de 1975 à 1990, elle reste le lieu de conflits latents, susceptibles de s’enflammer à tout instant. Cette latence de la guerre affecte le langage et la mémoire et crée des lignes de démarcations mentales. La production artistique en porte les traces, de même que la physionomie de la ville elle-même, la répartition de ses quartiers, l’occupation de ses espaces publics. Le colloque « Beyrouth, paradigme de la guerre civile universelle latente » invite un écrivain, des architectes et urbanistes, des anthropologues et politologues de Beyrouth à approfondir ces questions. -

The metropolises of Syria in the global processes of urbanisation
What future for city centres and new centralities?
Ce colloque se tiendra à Alep du 15 au 17 mars 2010. Il a pour but de présenter la façon dont les centres des grandes villes syriennes évoluent et se transforment tout en situant ces changements dans le processus mondialisé de l'urbanisation. L'approche comparative est privilégiée. Elle a pour ambition de répondre aux questions soulevées par les évolutions et transformations les plus récentes des métropoles syriennes et en particulier Alep. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans un programme scientifique de trois ans : « Les métropoles du Proche-Orient dans la mondialisation : entre ville « orientale » traditionnelle, modernisation à l’européenne et modèle du golfe ». Sur le plan formel, ce colloque s’intègre dans la politique de coopération décentralisée entre Lyon et Alep. Il sera l’occasion de renforcer ou de créer des partenariats entre les institutions de ces deux métropoles. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi. -

How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
