Figures and Perspectives on the Mass and the Individual in Capitalist Modernity (19th-21st century)
How is it possible to use the notion of mass without making it collapse into a complete condemnation of collective action or into an acritical celebration of the crowd? From there on, the relationship between mass and individual can be addressed in many fashions: Are there any specific ways for the mass to organize itself as a political subject? What are means whereby artworks represent and transform the linkage between mass and individual? What are the mutations undergone by the mass qua object of the social sciences? How does capitalist modernity affect the moral and psychic autonomy of individuals?

Scientific and material support to research projects FMSH, 2020
The Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) is launching a call for projects dedicated to innovative themes in the humanities and social sciences (SHS): Digital Humanities; Philanthropy and Education; Ecological Transition and Social Justice. This call for projects is a feature of one of the main missions of the FMSH, which is to provide scientific and material support to research projects that are in the early stages of their development and can use the support of the FMSH to develop further their scientific content, methodology, and research networks.

"Finding a voice" junior laboratory study day
Le point départ de notre réflexion est le constat selon lequel certains sujets n’ont pas accès à la parole dans l’espace public. Cette exclusion de la sphère de la parole concerne une pluralité de sujets, et ne saurait être limitée au groupe de ceux et celles qui n’ont pas voix au chapitre car ne peuvent pas voter (citoyen-ne-s mineur-e-s, étranger-ère-s ou privé-e-s de droits civiques). On peut songer à l’ensemble des groupes marginalisés dans la société (sans-abris, prisonnier-ère-s, malades, migrant-e-s, minorités sexuelles…), mais aussi plus généralement à l’ensemble des groupes dominés, que cette domination se fasse au nom de critères de sexe, de genre, de race ou de classe. L’hypothèse générale qui sous-tend notre réflexion est celle selon laquelle exclusion sociale et impossibilité à parler sont corrélées : l’effacement de la voix des sujets sociaux vulnérabilisés est solidaire ou même cause de leur exclusion, de sorte que l’on peut parler d’une « vulnérabilité linguistique ».

Le parcours et l'œuvre de Friedrich Engels demeurent encore souvent dans l'ombre de Karl Marx. L'ambition de ce colloque pluridisciplinaire, organisé les 30 novembre et 1er décembre 2020 à l'université de Strasbourg à l'occasion du bicentenaire de sa naissance, est de rompre avec les idées reçues sur Engels en mobilisant les acquis de la recherche récente en sciences humaines et sociales, afin de projeter sur sa vie et ses travaux une lumière nouvelle.

Axel Honneth: the division of work, the gap in political philosophy
Keynote to the Crossroads of Critique doctoral conference
The Sciences Po Graduate Conference in Political Theory 2019 is dedicated to the thought of Axel Honneth and the 'Frankfurt School Project' of critical theory. Over the last three decades, Axel Honneth has played a crucial role in giving new life to the post-Kantian tradition. As the leading voice of the Frankfurt School after Habermas, his work has been responsible for renewed interest in critical theory. His early engagement with Foucault, his turn to Hegel's notion of recognition for a new social theory as well as, more recently, Honneth's work on the institutional conditions of a 'democratic ethical life,' and, finally, his reappraisal of 'social freedom' as the normative idea of the socialist tradition represent only some of the most remarkable contributions he has made to contemporary theorizing.

Un siècle après son assassinat, ce colloque international – le premier organisé en France à son propos – entend rendre compte de ce renouveau.

The riot - a historical, conceptual and political subject
Objet historique, conceptuel et politique
L’émeute est, pour les sciences sociales, un objet d’étude problématique. Charles Tilly soulignait que le mot appartient au répertoire de la répression, à tout cet ensemble « des paroles infamantes que ne prononcent presque jamais les acteurs eux-mêmes ». Pourtant, son constat n’est pas entièrement exact : « émeute », y compris avec la charge de violence, de désordre et d’improvisation que porte le mot, est parfois revendiqué comme désignant une forme d’action jugée légitime par certains groupes. Pour Tilly, le biais qu’il soulignait était ainsi une raison pour ne pas employer le terme comme catégorie d’analyse du politique. Pour nous, la question reste ouverte. L’émeute oblige à s’interroger sur les critères qui permettent de penser la légitimité d’une contestation violente dans un État de droit : peut-on penser l’émeute comme une modalité d’exercice du droit de résistance ? Où doit-on la situer dans la distinction entre guerre et paix ?

Counter-enlightenment, Revolution and Dissent
Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence / PJCV
Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Animal rights and the vegan movement in Germany
En février 2017, le ministère allemand de l'Environnement décidait de supprimer la viande des repas servis à ses convives. On estime que l'Allemagne compte cette même année environ 8 millions de végétariens et 1,3 millions de végans (qui refusent l'utilisation de tout produit animal). Il apparaît donc intéressant de s'interroger sur la question animale en Allemagne quatorze ans après le colloque de Marc Cluet consacré à « L'amour des animaux dans le monde germanique », et ce d'autant plus que ces questions agitent de plus en plus également la société française. Nous avons choisi une approche interdisciplinaire pour aborder ces questions – littérature, philosophie, histoire, sociologie, économie, etc. – car la question animale est par essence transversale.

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis
This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

Le séminaire, portée par la chaire « Ethique et Transhumanisme », propose cette année de conduire ses réflexions sur deux axes principaux. En premier lieu, il s'agit de penser les questions éthiques, politiques et épistémologiques que posent l'intelligence artificielle et les algorithmes. En second lieu, ce sont les oppositions et tensions existant au sein du mouvement transhumaniste qui feront l'objet de plusieurs examens.

Toward « Revolution 13/13 »
This colloquium will constitute a prolegomenon to the seminar series “Revolution 13/13” that will run at the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought (and to the reading group that will be organized at the Columbia Global Centers in Paris) during the academic year 2017-2018. The goal will be to begin to engage a multidisciplinary and polyphonic conversation at the intersection of philosophy, of political science and law, of legal history and the social sciences and humanities, on the concept and on the practices of revolution and social change, or more broadly on the different forms that critique and political resistance can take and have taken in the contemporary world.

Sociology and anthropology of bodies in transformation
L’an passé, le séminaire était consacré à la présentation de travaux de jeune·s chercheur·e·s qui thématisaient le corps comme objet d’intervention, de transformations ou de catégorisation. Dans la continuité de ces réflexions, le séminaire de cette année est orienté vers la présentation et la discussion d’enquêtes en cours qui interrogent les opérations de politisation et de dépolitisation de la matérialité du corps. Plus précisément, on s’interrogera sur la manière dont différents acteurs sociaux mobilisent ou non la matérialité de leur corps, de celui d’autrui, ou d’êtres qui ne sont pas juridiquement reconnus comme des personnes, pour défendre des positionnements politiques, mettre en cause certaines pratiques, voire certaines institutions (l’État, la famille, la médecine).

Commune and community in the writings of Tiqqun and the Comité invisible
On peut dire après-coup – sur le moment, peu s'en sont aperçu – que dans le monde intellectuel finalement assez atone de la fin du XXe siècle, la publication de deux numéros d'une revue éphémère, Tiqqun 1 et Tiqqun 2, aura constitué un événement. Les textes de cette œuvre collective ont en effet revigoré la critique sociale et la pensée politique radicale, ce qui en a fait réfléchir – ou affolé – plus d'un.
