Circulations in the global South: Ethnographic explorations of globalized exchanges

APAD Conference

After the Roskilde conference in 2018, devoted to mobility and migration, the Association for the Anthropology of Social Change and Development (APAD) proposes for its 2020 edition, co-organized with the Department of Anthropology and African Studies of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FSHS) of the University of Lomé (Togo), to focus on the multiple forms of large-scale circulation of goods, ideas, techniques, information and models that increasingly cross the global South and link it to the rest of the world. Panels or papers focusing on smaller-scale, regional or neighbouring countries' circulations, or showing the consequences of scale change in circulations, are also welcome.

Seeing Politics through Intermediation and Intermediaries

This seminar proposes to look at politics through the lens of political intermediaries and what they do, i.e. intermediation. Intermediaries can be defined as an assorted group of actors (political brokers, political parties, interest groups, movements) who acts as a hinge between two or more levels, actors or social institutions; while intermediation , as a process, encompasses all the mediations that these actors perform in order to keep the political system intact (Zaremberg, Guarneros-Meza, and Lavalle 2017; Gunther, Puhle, and Montero 2007; Kitschelt 2004; Smith 2007). The question we are interested in relates to the transformations in the roles of these agents and processes of mediation since the neo-liberal transformation has engulfed the processes of public policy formulation, contestation and enactment.

The Pillars of Rule

The Writ of Dynasties and Nation-States in the Middle East and South Asia

Max Weber famously argued that states lay claim to the monopoly of the legitimate use of violence over certain circumscribed territories. However, historical and anthropological research has challenged his ideal-typical vision by showing how the idea of the unitary state is a fiction that can only be produced through the action of interrelated but partly autonomous agents. States, and the various institutions that constitute them, face the strategic task of identifying and domesticating the social networks that are necessary for them to secure control over particular territories and their populations. Local strongmen and notables can in turn use their own local influence in order to gain recognition from higher-level, more powerful, state institutions. In this international conference, scholars from a variety of disciplines will explore the ways in which dynastic power and/or the rule of the state is asserted, negotiated and contested across both the Middle East and South Asia.

Global art? Circulation and artistic commitment in the Arab world and Europe

Cette journée d’études vise à mettre au jour les enjeux, les modalités et les conséquences de circulations artistiques engagées et globalisées. Une approche comparée y sera développée dont le premier point d’ancrage est l’étude de circulations artistiques en provenance du monde arabe vers l’Europe, circulations inscrites dans les suites des soulèvements arabes de 2011 et 2012, mais aussi dans le temps plus long des relations entre l’Europe et le monde arabe. Quels sont les effets de ces circulations sur les contenus artistiques et les parcours des artistes ? De quelle manière le registre artistique se constitue-t-il comme un répertoire d’engagement, la référence à un art politique est-elle ici centrale ? La démarche s’inscrit dans les recherches sur la globalisation au croisement d’une sociologie de l’art et d’une sociologie politique et s’appuiera méthodologiquement sur la reconstitution de parcours d’engagements d’artistes en circulations, du monde arabe vers l’Europe, et retour.

Contested Hybrid Democracy: Endorsing or Revisiting the Liberal Model in non-Western Countries

Democracy has become a worldwide reference in terms of political organization and governance. While the universal character claimed by such a model has largely been theorized from a Western point of view, the variety of uses and appropriations from non-Western countries, including emerging States, remains unexamined. Disappointed with the results brought by the transition paradigm, the hybrid regimes literature tends to assess the unequal reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries. Nevertheless, the hybrid regimes analytical frame does not exhaust the question of the inner workings of these regimes, since its scientific referential remains based on Western theories and focuses on the uncompleted democratization processes and dynamics. This panel aims at switching the analytical frame towards the reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries through an assessment of uses and reappropriations of this model by political and social actors. Non-Western countries represent an interesting reflection ground for testing appropriation-reject dialectics regarding the Western democratic model. While this model directly inspires some of these countries (India, South Africa or Turkey), it has been rejected by other countries (China and Russia). Are there emerging models of democracy or counter-democracy models in non-Western countries ? We shall address these questions related to the unequal reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries.

Contestations, Emotions! Social and artistic expressions in the Public Space

A theoretical and practical perspective from the ground

During the recent movements of contestation in Mediterranean countries different kind of aesthetic gestures using the streets and the public spaces as places for a public manifestation of some social, ordinary -or radical- critic. They proceed from an ordinary culture that is transformed, adapted then spread out upon a new form in artistic tracks taking place in public spaces. These actions have both a critical and aesthetic dimension. They rely on the environment, mobilize cognitive, memorial and cultural or ordinary patterns. They also mobilize a common culture . This is the case of rap, new uses of old music, villages against occupation, graphic art in Palestine, in Egypt or in Syria. The conference will present and analyse some forms of experimentations, and public and critical commitments. What kind of “public spaces” is in use nowadays? How it configures new spaces of critic and public space and a new environment ? The panel will adopt a trans-disciplinary perspective by bringing together social scientists and practicers or activists.

Labour movements and State violence in Turkey, 28 May-28 June 2013

Depuis le 27 mai 2013, la défense du parc Gezi à Istanbul, menacé de destruction par le pouvoir AKP, donne lieu à une vive résistance inédite, civile, pacifique, multiforme, populaire et créative. Ce vaste mouvement social a constitué durant plus de deux semaines une expérience démocratique de premier plan qui a pris fin dans la nuit du 15 juin. Cette répression, dont il faut rendre compte et qu’il faut documenter, ne parvient pas à supprimer un mouvement qui s’adapte et se renouvelle en permanence. Une manière nouvelle d’organiser la vie commune génère des formes d’expressions inédites, permettant à tout en chacun de redéfinir son appartenance à la société : une demande d’autonomie partagée se fait jour dans la rencontre des diversités, accompagné d’un rejet obstiné de toute forme de violence. Le caractère profondément novateur du mouvement social actuel, ainsi que l’ampleur de la répression policière dont il est victime appellent une analyse pluridimensionnelle des sciences sociales.

Law and property in Lebanon : empirical investigations

Longtemps ignorées par les sciences sociales, la question du droit de propriété et de sa transmission au Liban, ainsi que celle des usages de la propriété et de ses droits dans différentes arènes méritent de faire l'objet d’une réflexion pluridisciplinaire privilégiant les méthodes d'enquête empiriques. Cette journée d'études, qui a lieu dans le cadre des programmes de recherche (ANR) PROMETEE et ANDROMAQUE (http://www.cjb.ma/205-andromaque-et-prometee.html) réunira ainsi des sociologues, des anthropologues, des historiens, des politologues et des juristes pour réfléchir à travers des études de cas et des travaux en cours sur ce que peut apporter l'étude des pratiques juridiques et judiciaires liées à la propriété à l'analyse du droit, de la norme et du politique au Liban et dans les pays voisins.

Law and property in Lebanon : Empirical investigations

Longtemps ignorée par les sciences sociales non juridiques, la question du droit de propriété et de sa transmission au Liban, ainsi que celle, plus large, de l’accès à la propriété, méritent de faire l'objet d’une réflexion interdisciplinaire impliquant en particulier les approches sociologique et anthropologique. Privilégiant les méthodes empiriques, et notamment celles reposant sur l’observation directe et prolongée des interactions et des pratiques, cet appel à contributions s'ouvre cependant sur toute tentative de clarification (qu'elle soit théorique, ou qu'elle mobilise d'autres méthodes) des pratiques juridiques et judiciaires tournant autour de la propriété en contexte libanais. La journée d'étude qui en résultera permettra de réfléchir à ce qu'apporte l'étude des pratiques liées à la propriété en général, et à celle du foncier en particulier, à l'analyse du droit, de la norme et du politique au Liban.

Femmes et islam : un malentendu ?

Si les années 1920-1930 ont témoigné d’une série d’actes de « dévoilement » dans le monde musulman, les décennies 1980-1990, en revanche, ont été marquées par le « re-voilement » de nombreuses femmes musulmanes. Au-delà de ce phénomène qui nécessite une lecture plurielle, cette journée d’études discutera des statuts des femmes dans le monde musulman aussi bien d’un point de vue juridique que social et politique. Elle portera une attention particulière aux courants féministes, et plus largement aux subjectivités féminines qui voient le jour dans le monde musulman.
