  Revisiting the Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919

  Interdisciplinary conference signaling the centennial of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic, the worst epidemic crisis on record in Portuguese and world history. The papers to be presented review the available knowledge on the subject, explore new data and point out the open questions regarding a historic event that caused dramatic effects on a global scale.

  Gender and contraception: what kind of (r)evolutions?

  This event aims to explore the “(r)evolutions” that the diffusion of contraception in the world has generated. It also intends to acknowledge the renewal of research on contraception and abortion through the integration of a gender perspective. The material and legal access to methods and knowledge on fertility control might have led to changes in power relations in different social spheres. Considering contraception today leads us to, among other things, questioning representations of procreative autonomy and gender equality.

  The intersectional approach in public health

  A new perspective for the study of the social inequalities in health?

  Les études sur les causes et les conséquences des inégalités sociales de santé (ISS) sont aujourd’hui très développées en France ; tant en épidémiologie sociale, en sociologie de la santé, en science politique ou en économie de la santé. Beaucoup de ces travaux prennent en compte la multiplicité des facteurs – sexe, origine ethnique, nationalité, classe sociale, âge, lieu de vie etc. – qui déterminent de façon positive ou négative les conditions d’accès aux soins et la santé des individus. Toutefois peu de ces études définissent leur approche comme « intersectionnelle ». Ce séminaire, par l’introduction du concept d’intersectionnalité, nous permettra ainsi en premier lieu d’interroger les catégories d’analyse, les méthodes, les concepts et objets d’étude de la recherche en santé publique. Mais ce séminaire sera aussi l’occasion de valoriser des travaux empiriques en santé publique qui prennent en compte l’imbrication des catégories de genre, d’origine ethnique, de classe sociale mais aussi d’autres variables comme l’orientation sexuelle, l’âge, la nationalité, le handicap, etc.
