Call for papers - Early modern
À partir d’un corpus de livres de fête conservés dans les collections Jacques Doucet de la bibliothèque de l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (mais qui ne doit pas s’y limiter), ces journées d’études chercheront à saisir les enjeux de la notation du ballet équestre dans les premières décennies du XVIIe siècle et ses prolongements jusqu’à la fin du siècle suivant, dans une relation à l’histoire de la danse, mais aussi à l’histoire des sciences et à l’histoire politique. Articulant représentations figurées des cavaliers et des motifs dessinés par leurs déplacements, et représentations abstraites (lignes, points, schémas) déployés sur la page, ces planches présentent un réel intérêt pour la recherche sur les formes notationnelles de la danse.

Revue Voltaire journal no.21 (2021) – varia
La Revue Voltaire, annuelle, publie des études traitant de la connaissance et de la diffusion des écrits de Voltaire, de ses réseaux, de sa trajectoire et de sa réception. Sa section Varia est ouverte à toutes contributions, publiées après expertise anonyme. 2020 marque l’achèvement des œuvres complètes publiées par la Voltaire Foundation à Oxford : Les Questions sur l’Encyclopédie, l’Essai sur les mœurs et l’esprit des nations, le Siècle de Louis XIV, le Précis du Siècle de Louis XV, la Lettre sur les Anglais, viennent ainsi d’être réédités et susciteront de nouvelles dynamiques de recherche. Quelles nouvelles lectures ces rééditions peuvent-elles susciter ? La posture du philosophe cherchant à rendre raison de l’ensemble des données liant l’homme à son histoire et à son engagement dans le présent est-elle encore lisible ? Le procès intenté aux Lumières, par la voie des débats suscités par les théories décoloniales ou de la cancel culture, influe-t-il sur notre perception de la pensée voltairienne ?

73rd congress of the Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française (IHAF)
Pour son 73e congrès, qui aura lieu à Orford en Estrie les 15, 16 et 17 octobre 2020, l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française sollicite des communications qui mobilisent la notion d’événement, mais également qui la mettent à l’épreuve et la questionnent, des communications qui cherchent à révéler des aspects méconnus d’événements bien enracinés dans les récits historiques, mais également qui mettent ou remettent en scène des événements oubliés de l’historiographie ou de la mémoire collective, des communications qui réfléchissent à la manière dont l’événement est fabriqué, historicisé. Au final, nous n’avons pas à choisir entre l’événement et la longue durée, mais il y a certainement une nécessité de réfléchir à la place de l’événement dans la longue durée.

The televisual spaces of medicine and health in the 20th Century
Medical television programmes, across their history, have had specific relationships to places and spaces. On the one level, they have represented medical and health places: consulting rooms, hospitals, the home, community spaces, public health infrastructures and the rest. As television-producers have represented these places, there has been an interaction with the developing capabilities of television technologies and grammars. Moreover, producers have borrowed their imaginaries of medical and health places from other media (film, photographs, museum displays etc.) and integrated, adjusted and reformulated them into their work.

Enhancing human in Europe: dream and nightmare of the interwar period
Number of historians and philosophers consider in general that transhumanism and its aim at enhancing the human through applied science and technology have their roots in the inter-war period: Julian Huxley, Jean Coutrot, John B.S. Haldane or John D. Bernal are indeed massively considered as the precursors of such ideas. But are they the sole references to mention when considering the inter-war origins of transhumanism, or are they just the tip of the iceberg of a broader current of thought emerging at that time? Such question immediately raises another one, which requires clarification : can current transhumanism(s) really be linked to the ideas emerging in the inter-war period ? The aim of the workshop will be first to check whether and how the idea of an enhanced human through technology intervention may have circulated in Europe during that time. Secondly, space will be given to look for pertinent criteria for the identification of a « transhumanism » of the inter-war period, by evaluating the nature of the indices which may be studied: mobilizing ideas, currents of thoughts, schools of thoughts, sociotechnical imaginaries, etc. Within these perspectives, the workshop will make possible comparisons between the different European contexts (England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, etc.), and the several papers will help us to better understand the circulation of ideas, networks and human exchanges which contributed to forge the cradle of transhumanist ideas. Communications will be in French or in English.

Health and medicine at the French court (Middle Ages-19th century)
Ce colloque international est consacré aux questions relevant de la santé et de la médecine à la cour de France, du Moyen Âge au XIXe siècle. Il a pour but d’approfondir l’étude du rôle des médecins, chirurgiens et apothicaires dans la vie quotidienne des espaces et des personnes de l’entourage royal ainsi que dans la mise en place de stratégies collectives pour éviter, fuir ou combattre les épidémies.

Depuis longtemps, la recherche sur Alexander von Humboldt s’est surtout intéressée aux différents aspects scientifiques de ses voyages et de ses recherches. Elle a par exemple analysé leurs apports aux évolutions des différents champs des « sciences romantiques » et de la philosophie, ou encore les relations avec les autres voyageurs et scientifiques, en discutant ainsi les effets de transferts et de circulations des savoirs entre Amérique latine et Europe – voire d’autres parties du monde. Si la recherche historique a ainsi pu faire découvrir au public de nombreuses facettes des œuvres d’Alexander von Humboldt et d’Aimé Bonpland dans leurs liens avec le monde scientifique de leur temps, plus rares ont été les chercheurs qui se sont penchés sur les aspects politiques de leur travail.

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Experts and Expertise in the League of Nations Mandates
Figures, Fields and Tools
Our vantage point is to consider the growing in importance of expertise during the twentieth century within the management of the colonial world and hence to study the emergence of the international sphere as a level of decision making. The purpose of this conference is to investigate the influence of early international agendas, advanced across the colonial world by experts operating in the orbit of international organizations. The investigation should also focus on the procedures and framework of international recognition of expertise at the intersection of the colonial and the international spheres. A first line of enquiry tackles the relations between the epistemologies that underpinned scientific knowledge in the colony and the metropolis. Another one looks into the sites of production of Mandatory expertise. Finally, we want to investigate the explicitly evolutionary conceptual framework for the mandates and its influence on the work of experts. We invite contributions dealing with the figure of the expert, whether official or not, and the various fields and tools of Mandatory expertise. Part and parcel of our reflexion is also a study of the limits and scope of expertise.

Knowledges, Sciences, Techniques and State building in Iberian America, 1790-1870
Over the last few decades the renewal of the history of the sciences has been marked by an opening towards non-European spaces, especially the Iberian Americas, and by the study of the relations between knowledges and power. We now have at our disposal a growing body of work on the imperial sciences, the contribution of the colonies to the advancement of knowledge, more particularly the natural sciences, and on the Enlightenment and the links between sciences, revolutions and independence in the colonial territories. However it is the opposite hypothesis that we seek to explore, highlighting both the modalities by which the legacy of the imperial, colonial Enlightenment was passed on and transformed, and the processes which meant that late 19th century Ibero-American societies, including Brazil and the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, were ready to take full advantage of the new scientistic paradigm with a rapidity that ought to strike us as surprising.

Court Medicine Healthcare Personnel and Sanitary Politics in Europe, 15c-18c
Court medical practitioners changed in numbers, occupations and functions during the Renaissance and early modern period (15c-18c) practitioners focused on different specialities within body-care, and took on different roles in the government of Europe’s states. Building on recent work that has concentrated on the history of body care at courts, this workshop will explores changes in court medical politics, practices and practitioners and the consequences they had for, firstly, medical thought, regulation and practice and, secondly, the activities, management and evolution of early modern states. -

À partir d’une question très générale sur la connaissance empirique, lettrée et sensible qu’ont les Européens du Maghreb, sur sa place dans les imaginaires contemporains et sur la situation de la recherche savante qui le prend comme objet – ou comme cadre d’étude, on cherchera à comprendre les modes et les processus de constitution de ces savoirs et les œuvres qui les ont fixés. -

Savoir et pouvoir dans la péninsule Ibérique au Moyen Âge
Séminaire de recherche consacré à l’histoire culturelle de la Péninsule ibérique, chrétienne, islamique et juive du Moyen Âge. En 2008-2009, le séminaire porte sur les traducteurs et les traductions dans l’Espagne médiévale, et aborde au passage le problème des langues, savantes et vernaculaires, et de leur signification. Le séminaire ouvre en outre ses portes à une série de spécialistes qui présentent leurs recherches actuelles dans le domaine de l'histoire culturelle en Péninsule ibérique médiévale. -

Les voyages du savoir - échanges avec l'« autre Méditerranée »
Au sein de la Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée, les chercheurs du GREMMO travaillent sur cet « Orient trop proche » des pays arabes et de leurs voisins. À l’heure où la mondialisation fabrique de nouvelles frontières aussi bien physiques qu’immatérielles, ils pensent que des réponses peuvent être données aux tensions, aux incompréhensions, aux menaces réelles de conflit. En effet, d’incessantes circulations dessinent, aujourd’hui comme hier, un territoire mouvant de l’échange avec cette « autre Méditerranée ». Des savoirs s’y échangent, selon des circulations complexes où les emprunts réciproques deviennent facilement des héritages continuellement réinventés. -

L'État et les savoirs : institutionnalisations, résistances, alternatives (1808-milieu XIXe siècle)
L'objectif de cette journée d’étude est d’analyser les formes de production et de diffusion des connaissances à l’œuvre au cours de la période impériale, longtemps délaissée par l’histoire sociale et culturelle des sciences. À travers l'analyse des transformations qui traversent certains champs de savoirs particulier (la chimie, l'histoire, la philosophie ou le droit...), il s’agira notamment d’évaluer la place de cet héritage impérial et de s’interroger sur les processus de redéfinition des relations qui lient l'État au monde des savoirs. Il conviendra de s'interroger précisément sur les « effets » de ces transformations des systèmes de représentation, des pratiques et des logiques de publications qui caractérisent le monde des sciences de la première XIXe siècle.
