The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)
Actors, stakes and methods
The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

The persistance of the ephemeral: perspectives on evanescent literary objects
Par le biais d’une réflexion sur ses marges, cette journée sera l’occasion de réfléchir à la valeur du canon littéraire, dans la mesure où celles-ci ne s’inscrivent pas nécessairement dans les axiologies par lesquelles on valorise la grande littérature, en particulier en ce qui concerne le rapport entre l’émulation et la postérité. Qu’il s’agisse des pratiques de lecture qu’elles incitent, des modes de fabrication, de circulation et de diffusion, des types d’écriture ou des enjeux sociaux qu’elles soulèvent, ces littératures éphémères invitent à penser différemment le « littéraire ». Ces décalages axiologiques entrent en résonnance avec l’actualité : le caractère éphémère des blogues, par exemple, les discrimine comme source de savoir, tandis que le rapport différent à l’auctorialité qu’implique ce mode de diffusion des textes peut remettre en cause leur qualité esthétique.

Apprehending zoological categories in past societies - sources, methods and uses
Les relations entre humains et animaux ont, tout au long de l’Histoire, été marquées par la volonté récurrente des premiers d’organiser la diversité et la pluralité des seconds dans des catégories plus ou moins vastes aux contours plus ou moins bien définis. Ces classifications ont bien souvent vocation à ordonner l’apparent chaos de la faune environnante, voire à permettre à l’humain d’affirmer un statut à part face aux non-humains. L’objectif de cette journée sera de tenter de comprendre la variété de ces hiérarchies et d’interroger quelques méthodes et pistes de recherche permettant de contourner les difficultés liées à la disparité des sources, aux problèmes de conservation, aux barrières linguistiques et cognitives et à l’impossibilité de reposer sur des informateurs systématiques.

The origins and foundation of works and institutions in the Middle Ages
East-East, 6th-15th centuries
Le thème retenu, Origines et fondations des œuvres et des institutions au Moyen Âge. Orient-Occident, VIe-XVe siècle (histoire, histoire de l'art, littérature, musicologie), invite à s'intéresser à la création des institutions (fondation d'une institution religieuse, d'une ville, d'une université, d'un gouvernement communal...) et des œuvres (architecturales, artistiques, littéraires, musicales, liturgiques) médiévales. D'abord en recherchant les motivations, les intérêts, les objectifs poursuivis : pourquoi faire naître quelque chose de nouveau ? Ensuite en examinant les modalités concrètes : qui sont les acteurs ? Qui sont les commanditaires ? Comment la réalisation est-elle financée ? Quels sont les choix techniques (au sens large, techniques rhétoriques, littéraires et stylistiques comprises) opérés pour donner sa forme à l'œuvre ? Et quelles sont les conséquences, quel est l'impact de l'œuvre ou de l'institution au moment de sa réalisation ?

Il s'inscrit aussi bien dans une approche intellectuelle, culturelle que sociale de l'histoire de la médecine et de la santé, de l'histoire des savoirs et des pratiques. Les sources de l'enquête peuvent aussi bien concerner l'histoire des textes et des livres (histoire des doctrines, approches philologique et codicologique, édition numérique) que celle des pratiques individuelles et collectives à travers des sources archivistiques.

15th Annual Conference of the International Medieval Society-Paris (IMS)
In the wake of the US presidential election and the Brexit referendum, the Oxford English Dictionary chose the expression “post-truth” as its word of the year. This expression underlines the growing tendency to dismiss objective facts in favor of impulsive—and often prejudicial—feelings, frequently supported by “alternative facts.” The contentious relationship between the truth and lies, or truth and fiction, which is currently playing out in the public arena has, in fact, a long-standing legacy—one which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. For this reason, this year’s IMS conference seeks to investigate the variety of different approaches to truth and fiction that existed in the Middle Ages.

L'historiographie de la mesure du temps se caractérise traditionnellement par une dichotomie entre des recherches consacrées à l'évolution des dispositifs techniques et d'autres qui concernent les cultures et les usages du temps. Une des conséquences majeures de cette dichotomie est la rareté d'études prenant en compte l'influence de facteurs sociaux et culturels sur la configuration des dispositifs techniques, ou interrogeant à l'inverse les cultures et les pratiques de la mesure du temps à partir de l'analyse des objets mécaniques. Ce colloque entend contribuer à réunir ces deux approches pour explorer les histoires matérielles du temps entre le XIVe et le XVIIIe siècle à travers la relation entre objets et pratiques.

En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques. L’atelier sera ainsi le terrain d’expérimentation pour une archéologie matérielle, visuelle et intellectuelle de l’art. Le séminaire proposera des études de cas, menées à partir de travaux en cours, qui seront mises en perspective tout au long d’une enquête historiographique sur la notion d’atelier et les conditions de l’innovation, entre arts et savoirs.

Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye a constitué, du XIIe au XVe siècle, un foyer artistique des plus dynamiques aux portes des Alpes. Le chantier de construction de l’église abbatiale s’est notamment avéré propice à l’expression d’une architecture et d’un décor gothiques aux sources multiples. Au XVIIIe siècle, c’est aussi à proximité immédiate de l’édifice que se situait un cabinet de curiosités, dont les collections d’histoire naturelle reflétaient alors l’ouverture des Antonins aux sciences.

The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance
Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale
Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.
