How to change our lifestyles?
La Méditerranée est sans doute une des régions du monde parmi les plus affectées par le réchauffement climatique et les bouleversements de notre écosystème. Ce constat est le point de départ de notre réflexion collective sur les changements de nos modes de vie. Comment vivre ? Sans doute bien différemment, dès aujourd’hui, et plus encore demain, compte tenu des fragilités de longue date du monde méditerranéen. Changer nos modes de vie ? Telle est la question qui servira de fil conducteur au cours des six séances de notre atelier de recherche, en 2020.

Make our own Walter Benjamin's “Experience and Poverty” ?
We are not in 1933, nor are we threatened, here in Europe, as Walter Benjamin was when, between two apocalypses and already in exile, in an indifference due to historical circumstances, he published his short and incisive text « Experience and Poverty » in a Prague’s newspaper with short-lived existence. However, isn’t the assessment he made of an alliance, by the great creators, between « a total disenchantment about the age » and, nevertheless, « an unlimited commitment to it » also ours ? Not still ours (the Shoah and other catastrophes have shaken up, since then, the order of the thinkable), but again ours, as if we were at the point where, undertaking our poverty today or, disarming voluntarily, would be the lifeline, the way out to escape the inertia promised by a dark future.

Le parcours et l'œuvre de Friedrich Engels demeurent encore souvent dans l'ombre de Karl Marx. L'ambition de ce colloque pluridisciplinaire, organisé les 30 novembre et 1er décembre 2020 à l'université de Strasbourg à l'occasion du bicentenaire de sa naissance, est de rompre avec les idées reçues sur Engels en mobilisant les acquis de la recherche récente en sciences humaines et sociales, afin de projeter sur sa vie et ses travaux une lumière nouvelle.

Comparisons between Japan and Europe
Ce seminaire a pour objectif d’explorer et d’interroger les philosophies, les idées et les utopies sur lesquelles reposent les mouvements de retour à la terre dans leur dimension culturelle et historique au Japon et en Europe. Les conceptions de la nature et de la vie sont au cœur de ces pensées et des mouvements sociaux écologistes. C’est pourquoi ce seminaire abordera les pensées de la nature, la notion de vie dans la pensée européenne et japonaise, et comment ces notions prennent forme, circulent, sont adaptées et participent des transformations sociales.

Tribute to Claudie Weill, reader of Rosa Luxemburg
La rencontre avec la pensée de Rosa Luxemburg a marqué en profondeur les travaux de recherche de Claudie Weill, historienne du socialisme et de la social-démocratie. Rosa Luxemburg a construit son œuvre en appliquant la méthode d’analyse de Marx aux problèmes d’un capitalisme en mutation, et notamment à l’étude des phénomènes récurrents de crise et des moyens employés par le capital pour restaurer sa rentabilité et garantir sa survie. Les problèmes qu’elle a soulevés, et dont Claudie Weill s’est fait l’interprète, s’imposent aujourd’hui à la réflexion critique, par-delà les évidentes différences de contexte. Ce numéro thématique de la revue L’homme et la société entend stimuler une réflexion afin de prolonger d’un point de vue théorique autant que pratique la pensée ainsi mise en valeur.

Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Dans quelle mesure les Lumières doivent-elles être diffusées vers les couches sociales les moins riches et les moins instruites ? Dans quelle mesure le fait de les diffuser change-t-il leur définition même ? Ainsi s'engage, au tournant du XIXe siècle, le débat qui contribue à faire des Lumières, dans les deux siècles qui suivent, un héritage multiple et complexe, qu'il est possible d'analyser au prisme des tensions entre pensée et action, idées et réalités, théorie et pratique ou encore forme de gouvernement (Regierungsform) et manière de gouverner (Regierungsart).

Animal rights and the vegan movement in Germany
En février 2017, le ministère allemand de l'Environnement décidait de supprimer la viande des repas servis à ses convives. On estime que l'Allemagne compte cette même année environ 8 millions de végétariens et 1,3 millions de végans (qui refusent l'utilisation de tout produit animal). Il apparaît donc intéressant de s'interroger sur la question animale en Allemagne quatorze ans après le colloque de Marc Cluet consacré à « L'amour des animaux dans le monde germanique », et ce d'autant plus que ces questions agitent de plus en plus également la société française. Nous avons choisi une approche interdisciplinaire pour aborder ces questions – littérature, philosophie, histoire, sociologie, économie, etc. – car la question animale est par essence transversale.

Difference, diversity, diffraction: confronting hegemonies and dispossessions
10th European Feminist Research Conference
The overall theme of the conference is “Difference, Diversity, Diffraction: Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions”, which refers to a topic central to Gender Studies: the social construction of difference and inequality on the one hand, and the recognition of marginalised experiences and subject positions on the other. In the face of growing right-wing populist movements, anti-feminist and anti-queer backlash, forced migration, austerity and climate change, these concerns take on renewed relevance. The subtitle “Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions” is a call to reflect on, challenge and defy the hierarchies, subjugations and deprivations that are linked to structural differentiations and to find affirmative ways of dealing with difference , diversity and diffraction. The conference is committed to promoting a feminist anti-racist accessible space for all genders.

La période allant de la fin des années 1960 au début des années 1980 est marquée par le militantisme intense et le changement culturel rapide. Tant la « nouvelle gauche » étudiante que la « deuxième vague » féministe ébranlent les certitudes des sociétés occidentales. Mais il est un aspect de ce mouvement de fond qui demeure mal compris: les revendications collectives des minorités nationales.

Languages and nations in the 19th century
La revendication liguistique a été dans l'Europe du XIXe siècle l'élément principal autour duquel se sont mobilisés les groupes nationaux pour obtenir leur indépendance dans la perspective de la création d'États-nations après l'éclatement des anciens empires. Le colloque, qui réunira historiens, juristes, linguistes, germanistes et philosophes, étudiera la dynamique qui s'instaure entre langue et nation d'un point de vue à la fois historique et politique. Au centre de l'intérêt il y aura d'une part l'approche théorique de la question par des hommes politiques et des intellectuels, et d'autre part la situation linguistique et culturelle, ballotée entre les revendications concurrentes des pays voisins et les procédés d'unification des nations européennes.

The conference will examine the cultural history of conservative ideas and movements in Western Europe and the United States between the 1970s and the 1990s. Focusing on cultures of conservatism, the conference will rethink the general contours of conservatism. It will pay close attention to the intersection of culture, politics and economics, in order to broaden our understanding of the processes of change that have unfolded since the 1970s.

On peut dire après-coup – sur le moment, peu s'en sont aperçu – que dans le monde intellectuel finalement assez atone de la fin du XXe siècle, la publication de deux numéros d'une revue éphémère, Tiqqun 1 et Tiqqun 2, aura constitué un événement. Les textes de cette œuvre collective ont en effet revigoré la critique sociale et la pensée politique radicale, ce qui en a fait réfléchir – ou affolé – plus d'un.

The tragic attacks in Paris on 7 January and 13 November 2015 have engendered vivid debates about national identity and national culture in France, and accelerated the promotion of patriotism by the socialist government. At the European level, whereas the death of nations has been predicted along with the triumph of globalisation, nations and nationalism make a spectacular come back in public debates, and put most European left-wing parties in an embarrassing position. In the aftermath of world war two, the Left gradually became suspicious of references to the nation, traditionally associated with rightwing ideologies. Yet in a time of identity debates and persistent collective attachment to nations, patriotism, sovereignty and nationalism are also increasingly used as political arguments.

L'anniversaire du déclenchement du premier conflit mondial a débouché sur des travaux d'importante sur l'Internationale et les internationalismes, notamment socialiste, avant 1914. En revanche, les milieux nationalistes ont été délaissés par la recherche, nonobstant les débats récurrents sur le « fascisme français » et sa « matrice préfasciste » ou des recherches collectives internationales et interdisciplinaires récemment conduites sur les principales figures du nationalisme français (Maurice Barrès, Charles Maurras) et articulées autour de leur influence et de leur rayonnement en Europe et aux Amériques.
