Call for papers - Early modern
The subject of this international conference is the participation of women in the development of scientific ideas from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. It welcomes reflections on women’s intellectual contributions to the creation of the « Republic of Letters », and how female curiosity was connected to the development of a new rationality that opened new paths towards modern science, while simultaneously being stimulated by the marvellous and the strange, as was manifest in the creation of scientific cabinets and collections of rare objects. It aims at encouraging reflections on the concept of female scientific curiosity. This will allow us to discuss the construction of a female subjectivity emerged from new approaches towards collections of naturalia.

By the same token, the issue is also interested in perspectives on ambiguity as a cultural phenomenon in its historical situatedness and political dimensions.

The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference
The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

Of pictures and what they think
Ce séminaire veut en premier lieu se montrer digne de ce mot sur lequel on passe d’ordinaire trop rapidement : il aimerait contribuer à ensemencer. Il tourne autour des deux mots grecs de logos et eikôn, le verbe et l’image pour employer une fois des traductions reçues et commodes. Cela dit on a depuis longtemps renoncé à traduire effectivement le premier, au-delà du prologue de Jean, et il sera plus prudent de faire de même pour le second, sans l’assimiler trop vite à ce latin image qu’il conviendra lui-même de démêler.

Transcendental spectator experience
Que dire des œuvres qui radicalisent l’idéalité du point de vue jusqu’à en faire une impossibilité empirique ? La perspective de la Renaissance permet des points de vue tellement surplombants que l’être humain ne peut les atteindre. Toutefois, ce qu’on a pu appeler la « perspective inversée », et plus généralement l’esthétique iconique, appellent aussi un point de vue bien différent du point de vue empirique, peut-être un point de vue eschatologique, depuis la fin des temps. Dans un autre registre, les nouvelles techniques numériques génératives permettent à présent d’engendrer des œuvres d’une durée infinie. Il n’est résolument pas possible de vivre une expérience spectatorielle de ces œuvres sans, à un moment, ne serait-ce que supposer une dimension transcendantale de sa propre subjectivité. La question est de savoir comment décrire ces expériences paradoxales, à la lisière de l’empirie et du transcendantal justement : l’expérience d’échapper à son propre point de vue, d’avoir à prendre un point de vue – dicté par l’œuvre – dont le spectateur réel est par principe incapable.

Un appel à communication est lancé auprès des chercheurs en design pour participer à la journée d’études Downcycling-Upcycling le 16 avril 2020 à l’université de Strasbourg. Il s'agit de s’emparer de la question du recyclage des déchets plastiques par la figure du maker dont la diversité des manières de faire sont autant de moyens de concevoir et de développer de nouveaux processus que d’entrer en résilience. Cet événement scientifique en design sera également l’occasion d’accueillir des designers et/ou ingénieurs qui exposeront leurs démarches et les réalités de terrain.

Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Schalten und walten. Towards Operative Ontologies
IKKM Biennial Conference 2019
The conference will conclude the IKKM six-year research program on ‘Operative Ontologies’. A term seeming contradictory at first, it assumes that everything that exists is not simply present or given but has been called into being through media and their operations in the most general sense: The ruling (das Walten) of nature as well as the ruling of the social reside under the command of technology, which as increasingly digitized technology is based on switching operations (das Schalten) — e.g. the achievements of bioengineering or the computational models of planet Earth. When embodied operations establish ontological orders and the difference between the ontic and the ontological thus re-enters the ontic, this demands a radical remodeling of ontology. The IKKM Biennial Conference 2019 therefore investigates the given with regard to the procedures through which it has been made possible, produced, set up, brought into the world and called into being — “switched on” — in the first place.

“Unity and Disunity” has been chosen as the main theme for the European Society for the History of Science's conference that will take place in London on September 2018. Within this framework, Trames Arborescentes has decided to participate by proposing a commented panel that will gather four speakers around the subject “Sacred science: Learning from the tree”. This panel traces the arboreal motif through time, using it as a means to reflect on unity and disunity of interaction between science, art and the sacred.

Si le posthumain a fait l’objet d’une riche investigation universitaire ces dernières années, ses liens avec la culture jeune n’ont quant à eux été que peu exploités, alors même que l’un semble nécessairement problématiser l’autre. Après tout, pour reprendre Elaine Ostry, comment et pourquoi user du « moment adolescent » pour devenir humain et interroger son humanité quand les adultes se préparent (et nous préparent) déjà à la posthumanité ? Quelle valeur prend l’âge métamorphique de l’adolescence à l’heure de la fin de l’homme qu’évoque Fukuyama en 2002 dans Our Posthuman Future ?

Si dans son sens ordinaire cette notion semble renvoyer à toute une série de conditions négatives, elle mérite une approche plus approfondie qui prenne en compte la multiplicité de(s) dimensions. L'objectif est donc d'interroger la notion de dépendance en mettant en dialogue plusieurs perspectives, disciplines et méthodologie. Cela dans le but d'ouvrir des pistes de réflexion inédites et des nouvelles approches à la question.

Powers of Imagination. Historical Approach
The concept of imagination is today seen as as a legitimate object of study, having long been discredited by scientific research. However, in modern and contemporary literature, imagination is generally considered in a negative way, as a mental faculty that can cause disease, error, illusion or sin. By cons, its role was very important, because the imagination formed the necessary link between body and soul. So that was the preferred place to act to perform bodily healing as well as spiritual. We would go against this idea of imagination by studying intellectual tradition and alternative and misunderstood practice. Since the XIIth and XIIIth centuries until the early XIXth century, thinkers and practitioners from a diverse set of disciplines, expressing themselves from different institutional positions, supported the idea that imagination has great powers on the body and on the body and mind of others.

Les pays développés, mais aussi émergents, identifient en général le progrès et le développement humains à un mouvement global d’amélioration constante des conditions techniques de production appelées « innovation ». Pour sa première journée d’études doctorales, le LIFAM propose aux doctorants dont les recherches portent sur l’architecture, de s’interroger sur la manière dont ce processus désigné par le terme d’« innovation » questionne l’architecture — au sens large de la pensée et de la pratique du projet architectural, urbain, paysager, et de leurs objets —, et comment à son tour l’architecture peut s’emparer des nouvelles conditions d’activité que l’innovation lui impose.

Form und Leben. Morphologie als Paradigma zwischen Philosophie und Wissenschaft
Tagung des DFG-Netzwerks “Morphologie als Paradigma” in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ZfL Berlin
Die Tagung eröffnet die Forschung zum Begriff der Morphologie im Rahmen des DFG-Netzwerks »Morphologie als Paradigma«. Im Horizont der namensgebenden These werden hier zur ersten Orientierung kultur- und naturphilosophische sowie poetologische und lebenswissenschaftliche Verwendungen von morphologischen Modellen ins Gespräch gebracht. Dabei soll zum einen der Modellfunktion der Morphologie bei Ernst Cassirer, zum anderen der Frage nach Parallelen bis in die moderne funktionsbiologische Disziplin Raum gegeben werden. Letztlich steht damit in kritischer Auseinandersetzung auch zur Debatte, ob hier möglicherweise ein Ansatzpunkt zur Redefinition der Aufgaben und Methoden der Kulturphilosophie liegt.
