Violence in Plato’s philosophy
Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (Special Issue)
The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Shame is a fundamental social emotion in Mediterranean cultures, which (still nowadays) place a strong and structuring value on honour, and ancient literature bears its mark. From the outset, it is also an ambivalent emotion, with contrasting faces, as evidenced by the semantic differences and overlaps of the doublet αἰσχύνη/αἰδώς. The historical field targeted by the scientific committee of the colloquium is broad, where existing studies preferentially focus on archaic poetic texts (Homer, tragic poets) and on classical authors, Plato and especially Aristotle. The conference Shame and Virtue proposes, from and beyond this period, to extend the investigation to Hellenistic schools, the Roman world and ancient Christianity. In this field, which articulates various types of pluralism (historical, political, linguistic, religious), the papers presented will help to explore the ambivalent relationship between shame and virtue in antiquity.ng

Life and Mind. Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy
Despite the interest in exploring Aristotelian themes in contemporary philosophy, there has been no coordinated attempt to survey or integrate the ways in which Aristotle’s approach to understanding life, mind, and the relation between them might inform and enrich our own. The objective of this workshop is to explore the way in which Aristotelian thought can brought to bear on contemporary research on the much-debated issue of the so-called mind-body problem and on its implications for the conceptualization of notions such as that of organism, animal and human perception and action, human moral agency, and the relation between mind and life.

The digital genetic publishing of ancient texts: Cicero's philosophy corpus
Post-doc position
Dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Contenus et corpus numériques » (CORNUM), financé par la région Normandie, l’équipe de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les aires culturelles (ERIAC – université de Rouen Normandie EA 4705) et l’Institut de recherches interdisciplinaires homme et société (IRIHS- FED 4137) recrutent un post-doctorant pour un contrat de 9 mois à partir de l’automne 2019. Le post-doctorant devra assurer l’analyse et l’étude du corpus du sous-projet « Éditions génétiques numériques des textes antiques : le corpus philosophique de Cicéron » (eGesta), sous la direction du Pr. Clara Auvray-Assayas. Il accompagnera également le porteur et les chercheurs de ce sous-projet dans la conception et la réalisation d’une plateforme d’édition scientifique inédite.

Dialogue, dialogism et polyphony
Questions of enunciation in the rhetorical and philosophical texts of Antiquity
Il s’agit, en partant des différentes situations embrassées par la notion de « dialogue » en Grèce et à Rome (modalité discursive, figure du discours produisant un effet, genre littéraire construit à partir de dispositifs de représentation complexes), de s’intéresser plus particulièrement à la distinction entre dialogue et dialogisme. Le corpus envisagé est à la fois celui de la pratique et de la théorie rhétoriques (discours, déclamations, traités) et celui des genres philosophiques qui privilégient le dialogisme (dialogues, lettres, diatribes). La mise en parallèle de ces deux corpus cherche à interroger les phénomènes d'influences réciproques; ainsi entre par exemple les figures rhétoriques du dialogisme et le genre philosophique du dialogue.

Le seul traité antique d’onirocritique préservé dans sa totalité est celui d’Artémidore de Daldis, auteur grec de la fin du IIe siècle de notre ère. Depuis septembre 2007, le groupe Artémidore en a entrepris une nouvelle édition et traduction annotée. En mars 2009, il a organisé une première journée d’études autour de cette oeuvre et de l’interprétation des rêves en général. Celle-ci sera la septième.

Parrhesia (freedom of speech) and conflict of interpretations in diagnosis
Le diagnostic médical est un haut lieu de l'interprétation des signes, avec ses difficultés, ses doutes et ses problèmes. Il doit néanmoins être annoncé, et donc passer par une mise en forme discursive, avec ses enjeux rhétoriques de conviction, et doit faire avec la réaction des patients (ou de leurs proches), leur propre information et leur propre capacité à interpréter à la fois les signes et le discours médical. Nous proposons un colloque autour de ces questions, en évaluant leurs enjeux généraux conceptuels et sociétaux, et en nous focalisant autour de deux exemples répondant à des évolutions contemporaines : le diagnostic en psychiatrie et le diagnostic en génétique. Notre démarche se veut résolument pluridisciplinaire, associant des enseignants-chercheurs de divers horizons (philosophie, histoire, droit, médecine) et des professionnels de la santé et du soin.

The wisdom of Antiquity: the good life, vulnerability and life together
Contemporary reappropriations of ancient philosophy
Vie bonne, vulnérabilité, commun-s sont quelques uns des nouveaux thèmes privilégiés de la philosophie morale, sociale et politique contemporaine. Ce colloque tente de comprendre ce que les philosophes contemporain-e-s empruntent à l’Antiquité, et comment ils et elles travaillent ces thématiques fondatrices de la pensée ancienne, et comment ils et elles en viennent ainsi à poser à nouveaux frais la question de la vie bonne, de la fragilité, du commun. Ces thématiques font en effet l’objet d’une problématisation singulière qui n’est pas la répétition stérile des questionnements des anciens, et qu’il importe d’interroger tout à la fois dans ce qui en fait l’actualité (pourquoi ces questions s’imposent à nous aujourd’hui ?) et dans ce qu’elle révèle d’actualité des anciens (pourquoi la référence aux anciens s’impose-t-elle à nous ?).

Le but de ce séminaire est de rassembler tous les chercheurs travaillant sur l'écriture de l'histoire dans l'Antiquité, qu'ils soient littéraires, historiens, archéologues... Les séances auront lieu une fois par mois, alternativement à Paris (École normale supérieure) et à Lyon (université Lumière Lyon 2). Elles consisteront en une communication de 45 minutes, suivie d'une discussion lancée par un répondant et d'un « goûter » informel. Sont les bienvenus les chercheurs de tous horizons, ainsi que les doctorants et, éventuellement, les étudiants de master.

Dion de Pruse : l'homme, son œuvre et sa postérité
Depuis l'édition de 1893-1896 procurée par Hans von Arnim, de nombreux travaux de recherche ont été consacrés à l'œuvre de Dion de Pruse dans de nombreux champs disciplinaires des sciences de l'Antiquité : histoire des cités grecques à l'époque impériale, religions de l'Antiquité, philosophie gréco-romaine, rhétorique et sophistique grecques d'époque impériale, transmission du texte et fortune. Un rapport critique concernant les travaux publiés sur Dion de 1990 à 2013 sera par ailleurs publié dans Lustrum de 2015. La dernière journée d'études consacrée à Dion, à Oxford en 1999, a permis de faire en partie le point sur trois de ces champs disciplinaires : Dion et les cités de l'Empire gréco-romain, la seconde sophistique et la philosophie.

The Notion of Intelligence in Ancient Greece (nous-noein), from Homer to Platonism
Vol. 16 Methodos (2016)
The aim of this issue of Methodos is to gather contributions of international scholars on the notion of nous-noein in order to reconstruct the history of the terms related to intelligence and its activities. The issue will mainly try to outline the evolution of such terms, from their original perceptual meaning to their conceptual and theoretical scope. Contributions should thus provide materials and analysis to identify the stages and ruptures in the evolution of their use. Additionally, all attempts to trace the technical and cultural transformations which have allowed the passage from the practical understanding of the nous-noein to its more abstract uses are welcome. Papers should by no means be limited to genetic or historical reconstructions; we also welcome any paper bringing some new elements of reflection on the notion of intelligence in the chosen era.

The Wisdom of the Ancients. Jerusalem rediscovers Athens
The German-Jewish Revaluation of Ancient Philosophy
Between 1920 and 1930, a group of young, brilliant Jewish researchers studied in Germany under the direction of Cassirer, Husserl and Heidegger. Leo Strauss, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas, Hannah Arendt, Jacob Klein, Eric Weil, Günther Anders, and others were forced by the advent of Nazism to escape from Germany and to wander around the world. All these thinkers strove to question the historicist assumption, according to which Modernity is to be seen as progress in respect to the Ancient thought. In their studies, they found new ways to listen to the voice of the Ancients, by revaluating them in the context of the crisis of modern thought. Starting from Athens and Jerusalem, the symbolic roots of western culture, these philosophers problematized and revitalized the quarrel between Ancients and Moderns over again.

Séminaire d'études platoniciennes 2015
Comment peut-on répondre à ce qu'est une « vertu », comme Socrate l'exige dans de nombreux dialogues platoniciens, sans savoir comment on peut la « produire » ? Travail d'artisan et entreprise éducative se rejoignent à travers le problème de la production d'un état ou d'une disposition dont il est possible d'éprouver la qualité. Des premiers dialogues dits « socratiques » aux Lois, ce séminaire a pour vocation d'envisager la question de la nature de la vertu à travers le problème de sa production.
