Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries
Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles
This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

Sensus fidelium and authorized discourse during late Antiquity
VIIe édition du colloque de patristique et d'histoire ancienne de La Rochelle, le colloque « les Pères de l'Église à l'écoute du peuple » honore une attitude largement interdisciplinaire : il réunit vingt trois spécialistes d'histoire romaine, de littérature grecque et latine, de théologie et de droit canonique autour de l'émergence de la notion de sensus fidelium. Tout au long de l'antiquité tardive, ce sens aiguisé agit au sein des communautés comme un instinct pour repérer l'authenticité de la foi. Comment cette catégorie a-t-elle émergé ? comment les figures d'autorité ecclésiale, les Pères, ont-ils accueilli, consulté, soutenu ou contesté ce flair du peuple ? autant de questions que ce colloque cherchera à approfondir afin de mieux évaluer l'impact de ce sensus fidelium.

An der Studienwoche können junge Historiker und Doktoranden der deutschsprachigen und italienischen Kulturbereiche teilnehmen (Nachwuchswissenschaftler und qualifizierte Studenten in fortgeschrittenen Semestern). Es werden 12 Stipendien in Form einer Reisekostenvergütung (bis höchstens 200 €), freier Unterkunft und Verpflegung gewährt.
