  New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan

  In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

  Commentaries on Ibn Sīnā’s Qaṣīdat al-nafs

  Two postdoc research grants

  Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.

  This afternoon event in Bath (United Kingdom) is aimed at postgraduate students and early career academics interested in Chinese art, whether as a career or as a source for their research. The afternoon will start with a visit to the Museum of East Asian Art Bath. Then three leading professionals in Chinese art in the United Kingdom will give a talk and questions/answers. A workshop will then invite participants to reflect on and prepare for a career related to the arts of China.

  Tools, methods, corpus: the modelisation of data in the humanities and social sciences

  Study day on web data and the humanities and social sciences

  L’objectif de cette journée détude est de réunir des laboratoires de recherche et des institutions engagés la dynamique du web sémantique pour la structuration et la diffusion de leurs travaux. En s’appuyant sur le traitement de corpus particuliers, dans le contexte de démarches scientifiques spécifiques, cette rencontre sera l’occasion d’échanger autour de la mise en œuvre des standards et des outils du web de données : choix des ontologies, utilisation de notices et de vocabulaires d’autorité, alignement sur des jeux de données de référence. L'USR InVisu a pour vocation de contribuer à la réflexion méthodologique en histoire de l’art par l’expérimentation des nouvelles technologies de l’information. Elle est engagée dans l'élaboration d’un référentiel sur les monuments du Caire, destiné à être diffusé selon les standards du web sémantique.

Le stage est financé par la COST ACTION IS 1005 Medieval Europe. Medieval Cultures and Technological Resources, et organisé en collaboration avec Biblissima  (Campus Condorcet).
