Regards croisés sur deux arts industriels (1890-1980)
Cette journée d’études vise à explorer l’histoire croisée de la photographie et du design, autrement dit la rencontre entre ces deux « arts » industriels qui ont à voir avec la série, le multiple et le reproductible depuis la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Malgré un usage de plus en plus massif de la photographie dans le domaine du design au cours du XXe siècle, voire une tyrannie du photographiable, le lien entre photographie et design a été peu historicisé. Si la photographie a pu être tour à tour un moyen d’enregistrement, de contrôle, de distanciation, d’exposition mais aussi de publicité du design, en quoi cet outil a-t-il également pu être un lieu d’expérimentation ?

With one of the largest collections of Russian jewelry art in the world, Fabergé Museum in St. Petersburg considers it its duty to study the topic from all angles and in a broad historical and cultural context. We hope to include in our conference contributions from art historians and critics, museum and archive professionals, collectors, and jewelers. In the period from the early 19th to the early 20th centuries, Russian jewelry art tread the path from the Empire style to Art Nouveau, saw the appearance of a constellation of brilliant jewelers both Russian and foreign, got itself noticed at World’s Fairs, contributed to the revival of old jewelry techniques, and began to be collected by both connoisseurs and museums.

Dans le domaine de la recherche, la question d’un design à la fois comme champ disciplinaire et sujet à interroger, se pose avec acuité. Malgré l’engouement dont il fait l’objet au quotidien, le design – et les domaines rattachés industrie, industrie d’art, artisanat entre autres – reste encore très largement à identifier, explorer et qualifier. La notion est encore difficile à cerner et demande toujours à être définie tant sur le plan historique, esthétique ou encore économique et sociologique. C’est le sens du colloque Stratégies et dispositifs de reconnaissance dans le champ du design et des arts décoratifs.

La Revue d’histoire du XIXe siècle souhaite mettre en lumière à la fois les conditions de dialogue entre archéologues et historiens sur des « territoires » du XIXe siècle et les apports croisés que ces deux disciplines peuvent apporter à notre connaissance du XIXe siècle en essayant de sortir de la compétition ancienne héritée de la Guerre Froide entre l’Occident et le bloc de l’Est et en élargissant les thématiques.

The reticulation of the world 2: art technology and textiles
La journée d’étude « La réticulation du monde (2) – art, technologie, textile) » est le second volet d’un projet pluriannuel initié en 2014 par les écoles d’art du NPDC et Le Fresnoy. Cette seconde journée a pour fonction de proposer un approfondissement de la problématique du « réseau » à travers son paradigme initial : le textile. Elle trouve son ancrage dans l’histoire du terme même de « réseau » qui désigne à l’origine un filet (« résueil » est un filet de pêche ; « résille » est un tissu à larges mailles qui couvre initialement le visage) ; mais aussi dans l’histoire de la région qui fut, de la fin du XVIIIe siècle à la première moitié du XXe siècle, un haut lieu de la production textile.

Fabrications: Designing for Silk in the Eighteenth Century
Joubert de la Hiberderie’s Le Dessinateur d’étoffes d’or, d’argent, et de soie (1765) was the first book to be published on textile design in Europe. In preparation for the publication of an English translation and critical edition of the text this one day conference calls for papers that will analyse, critique, contextualise, review or otherwise engage with the Le dessinateur in the light of its themes: production, design, technology, education, botany and art. Joubert’s manual argues for both a liberal and a technological education for the ideal designer. Such a person must, he argues, have detailed knowledge of the materials, technologies and traditions of patterned silk in order successfully to propose new designs; he or she must also have taste and an eye for beauty, which call, he says, for travel in order to see both the beauties of nature and those of art gathered in the gardens and galleries of Paris and the île de France.

Les envers de l’obsolète : reformulations et réappropriations des paysages post-industriels
Au moment où il est question de ré-industrialisation comme une possible sortie de crise, nos anciens paysages industriels laissés pour la plupart à l’abandon refont surface. État d’urgence, utopie ou blessure ouverte, bien qu’esthétiquement souvent semblables, ces zones aujourd’hui appelées post-industrielles content tout autant l’histoire de la fin du rêve capitaliste qu’un récit propre à chaque culture voire à chaque groupe ou corporation fondés autour de ces aires de production. Questionnant la sentence de Vladimir Nabokov, Le futur est tout sauf l’envers de l’obsolète, ce colloque s’intéressera a ce qui est encore en jeu, la limaille en somme, résidu tenace et mémoriel de ces espaces post-industriels.

The progress of perfected industry
Workshops and manufactures in the years between the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire (France 1789 – 1815)
Up until now the revolutionary period has mainly been considered as a period of disruption, especially in the field of luxury industries, which were considered to be at odds with the values of the new emerging social system. It is now possible to show that contrary to this general assumption, continuity can be found in this pivotal period between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The quick re-awakening of the production of luxury goods followed the establishment of the Directoire and its flowering during the Napoleonic years is proof of great flexibility and adjustment to social change and the new paradigms of labor. A number of questions emerge from these observations: what events and changes confronted former royal and later national manufacturers, famous workshops and regional producers in the years between the Ancien Régime and the Bourbon Restoration? In what ways were artists and artisans able to adapt or resign themselves to the new challenges? But also – to what extent did these events stimulate new modes of creativity and production which would have an impact on the development of industrialization in France?

Manufacturers and merchants : making and exporting clocks and other luxury goods in the 18th century
Roger Smith is an independent historian who was educated at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006. He is chiefly interested in the organisation of the manufacture and sale of clocks, watches and related luxury articles in the eighteenth century, including international aspects like the migration of craftsmen. He has done much research into the Anglo-Swiss watchmaking firm of Vulliamy of London, and is currently working on a major study of James Cox and his competitors in the trade in clocks and watches from Western Europe to Asia. As well as publishing extensively on such topics, he has acted as historical adviser to museums and auction houses, including the loan exhibition SingSong, Treasures from the Forbidden City at the Museum Speelklok, Utrecht in 2010-11.

Ces deux journées d’études internationales, mêlant recherches historiques, programmes récemment achevés et projets en cours se proposent d’offrir aux différents acteurs engagés dans la protection des ouvrages défensifs littoraux (chercheurs, architectes, archéologues, paysagistes, élus, collectivités locales, militaires et associations) des schémas généraux de valorisation de sites en réseau dans des conditions de restauration intimement liées au sens et à la fonction de l’architecture militaire tout en tenant compte de leur environnement. -

Between art and industry: The issues of technical training (18th-20th century)
Par-delà les rythmes et voies multiples de l’industrialisation, la question de la formation technique demeure un enjeu fondamental, que l’historiographie est loin d’avoir suffisamment exploré. L’exigence de qualité des produits fournit en particulier, du XVIIIe au XXe siècle, un levier puissant pour la définition et l’organisation de politiques de formation fort variées. Des formations locales cantonnées à l'atelier jusqu’aux grandes écoles d'ingénieurs, la reconnaissance des besoins de formation ne préjuge pas de ses modalités institutionnelles et pédagogiques. La notion de qualité, dont la définition évolutive relève de logiques économiques et juridiques de production et de commercialisation, suppose dès lors d’envisager la pratique artistique comme l’un des fondements de l’innovation industrielle. -

Thinking techniques in the 18th century
Conçue comme une introduction savante à l'exposition « Automates & merveilles » qui ouvrira ses portes le 28 avril au Musée d'art et d'histoire Neuchâtel, cette journée d'études se déroule dans le cadre du projet FNS « Les mécaniciens de l’illusion », recherche dédiée aux célèbres horlogers et mécaniciens Pierre et Henry-Louis Jaquet-Droz par l’Institut d'histoire de l'art et de muséologie de l'université de Neuchâtel. La rencontre se propose de réunir des spécialistes provenant d'horizons disciplinaires différents, afin de les faire dialoguer autour du sens que la notion de technique a acquis au siècle des Lumières et d’élaborer une réflexion autour des nombreuses déclinaisons dont elle a été l'objet. -

Créée en 1885 à l’initiative conjointe d’Etienne Mimard et de Pierre Blachon, la Manufacture française d’armes et de cycles de Saint-Étienne (Manufrance), s’est élevée en l’espace d’un siècle au rang de symbole industriel et commercial de la ville. Entreprise mythique et emblématique, Manufrance sera le sujet d’un colloque international aux débats ouverts et transdisciplinaires, mêlant présentation de films, tables rondes, interventions scientifiques et parcours patrimoniaux. A travers ce colloque international, nous souhaitons faire notre la célèbre devise « bien faire et le faire savoir ». L’Université Jean Monnet lance cet appel à contributions internationales et interdisciplinaires. Une publication est envisagée. Le comité scientifique présidé par Monsieur Pierre Lamard est placé sous la présidence d’honneur de Monsieur Denis Woronoff. -

Demande de vitesse, politiques d'accroissement de la vitesse ferroviaire, représentations de la vitesse et de son impact sur l'organisation des territoires sont les thèmes qu'abordera cette journée ouverte à tous sur inscription préalable sur le site.
