LGBTQIA+ sexualities: subjectivities, movements, languages
LGBTQIA+ studies for contemporary history, having produced a vast amount of researches, are still questioning history and historiography: how can LGBTQIA+ history be written? Does it merely overlap with the history of LGBTQIA+ subjectivities or does it exceed the boundaries of the LGBTQIA+ community? Does it challenge the historical imagination in terms of sources, archives, political and disciplinary boundaries, gender categories? Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea is looking for contributions aimed at investigating these issues.

Versailles
The Myth of Versailles and European Courts, 18th and 19th centuries
This symposium is organised in conjunction with the research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” led by the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. The aim is to analyse the modus operandi of the myth of Versailles in the monarchic Europe of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, taking into account the two contradictory yet complementary elements that characterise the idea of myth: the real and the reconstruction of the real. The focus of this conference will therefore be twofold: understanding how the different aspects specific to the identity of Versailles have fuelled an illusion, but also discerning how this illusion gave rise to other accomplishments, whether architectural, ritual or political.

Ce premier atelier du programme de recherche « Américanisation par les arts ? France – États‑Unis. Échanges et appropriations (1850-2020) » abordera la question des échanges et des appropriations culturelles entre la France et les États-Unis, de manière interdisciplinaire, pour en cerner les effets et les modes opératoires sur l’univers sensible tant des Français que des Nord-Américains à partir de quatre portes d’entrée : le corps (manières de se comporter, place accordée au corps dans la vie quotidienne), la voix (manières de parler, de chanter, vocalités, environnement sonore radiophonique et télévisuel), la langue (manières d’écrire et de penser, représentations), les formes (influence des arts savants et populaires dans l’environnement sonore et visuel quotidien).

Charles Percy Snow (1905-1980), chimiste et romancier britannique, a consacré sa célèbre conférence The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution (Deux cultures et la révolution scientifique, 1959) à l’incompréhension grandissante entre la culture littéraire et la culture scientifique tout en montrant les dangers de cette scission pour le progrès de la civilisation.

La journée d’étude, consacrée aux définitions et redéfinitions des identités des amateurs, est centrée sur les moments de partage entre amateurs et professionnels dans les sciences des années 1850 aux années 1950. À partir d’objets disciplinaires différents (médecine, psychologie, archéologie, astronomie, mycologie), elle aborde : l’effet des transformations juridiques et des découvertes scientifiques sur l’organisation des différentes disciplines et les représentations des acteurs ; la manière dont l’émergence de nouveaux objets d’étude, celle de nouvelles disciplines et le développement de controverses scientifiques redessinent les frontières entre amateurs et professionnels ; la façon dont l’institutionnalisation des réseaux (congrès et instituts) influence les redéfinitions des amateurs par rapport aux professionnels.

The multiple Antiquities of Greek modernity (19th-21st centuries)
Dans un XIXe siècle où la discussion sur les origines nationales bat son plein dans toute l’Europe, les Grecs auraient-ils pu se dispenser d’une instance de légitimation aussi flatteuse et aussi prometteuse que l’Antiquité ? De fait, la Grèce ancienne devient d’emblée, un élément déterminant dans l’élaboration difficultueuse d’une identité néo-hellénique et d’une l’idéologie étatique. Nous voudrions explorer ce retour du passé dans le présent en questionnant la diversité et l’hétérogénéité des « Antiquités » créées et véhiculées aux XIXe et XXe siècles, le contexte (national, culturel, politique) dans lequel les diverses, et souvent contradictoires, représentations de l’Antiquité ont été formulées en interférant les unes avec les autres, les manières dont le contexte dominant de l’histoire nationale a été consolidé ou sapé par d’autres cadres de pensée projetant sur l’Antiquité des demandes alternatives.

The Mediterranean of the artists. A critical modernity, 1880-1945
Prenant le contrepied de l’histoire canonique d’une modernité d’origine essentiellement septentrionale, ce colloque se propose de redessiner une cartographie artistique où le « sud » ne jouerait plus le rôle convenu de la subalternité, mais celui autrement plus stimulant d’une altérité active, dans un espace divers et multipolaire. Les limites chronologiques envisagées – 1880-1945 – tiennent compte de la présence diffuse d’une pensée méditerranéenne des arts, savants ou populaires, fixés sur l’horizon avant-gardiste ou cherchant leur « futuro alle spalle » (Pirani 1998), exaltant un idéal universaliste humaniste ou prêtant allégeance à la troisième voie fantasmée des fascismes. Puisant aux racines d’une culture populaire ou nationale, ces modernités se caractérisent par une volonté de conciliation avec une tradition recomposée.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Zouk : Trajectories, imaginations and perspectives
Dans la Caraïbe et ailleurs, quel impact le zouk a-t-il eu et a-t-il sur les littératures, les arts, les modes de vie, sur l'organisation sociale, les modes de communication, les consciences, les esprits, les imaginaires ? Le zouk a-t-il transformé les sociétés créoles, les sociétés du « sud » culturellement, politiquement, socialement ? Quel est l'impact du zouk sur les productions internationales ? Quand on sait que le zouk en tant que musique populaire, tient le haut du pavé dans la sphère française, en matière de ventes, de certifications, de récompenses et de représentativité nationale, ne peut-on pas l'envisager en Guadeloupe comme en Martinique, comme un moteur de l'économie culturelle et touristique qui permettrait la synergie d'un réseau allant de l'exploitation, via la production (diffusion, édias, internet, métiers des arts, du spectacle et de la scène, de la communication, de l'information...) ?

Criminal complaints in France post-1870
Inventory, problematisation, promoting an unknown corpus
La complainte criminelle – au sens strict du terme, un texte chanté narrant dans un but informatif et/ou édifiant les détails d’un authentique fait divers criminel – s’inscrit dans une histoire longue, depuis les occasionnels du XVIe siècle, jusqu’aux « Canards sanglants » du premier XIXe siècle. Autrefois tiré de l’oubli par des collectionneurs, ou des érudits, ce type d’éphémère est l’objet d’une attention par trop occasionnelle. Trois générations marquent l’historiographie récente des canards criminels. Jean-Pierre Seguin, le pionnier, les a tirés de l’ombre au tournant des années 1960, puis, dans les années 1980, en particulier en Bretagne, la recherche sur les « chansons sur feuilles volantes » a connu un grand succès. Enfin, la mise en ligne récente de la base de données « Complaintes criminelles 1870-1940 » sur le site Criminocorpus ouvre un nouveau chantier visant à interroger les derniers soubresauts de cette forme, des débuts de la IIIe République à la seconde guerre mondiale.

Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art
The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe
Perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)
The “modern” courts in Europe included the institutional, social, societal and cultural aspects concomitant with the political affirmation of personalities emerging, by agreement or through conflict, from communities exercising power together in order to seize authority for their own personal benefit and to develop a range of encomiastic processes for their own person. In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the princely courts in Europe did not confine themselves to one single paradigm. There were as many courts as there were princely houses, as many “national” types, even if some, like the Burgundian court in the 15th century and the courts in northern and central Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, proposed models and exercised influence from one end of Europe to the other, while accommodating indigenous influences.

Dans quelle mesure le fait de les diffuser change-t-il leur définition même ? Ainsi s'engage, au tournant du XIXe siècle, le débat qui contribue à faire des Lumières, dans les deux siècles qui suivent, un héritage multiple et complexe, qu'il est possible d'analyser au prisme des tensions entre pensée et action, idées et réalités, théorie et pratique ou encore forme de gouvernement (Regierungsform) et manière de gouverner (Regierungsart).

What role does migration play in establishing new ways of living and in the organization of societies? Socio-political innovation means the emergence, implementation and dissemination of new social and political practices in different areas of society. The conference aims to identify and analyze such societal transformations, which happen in relation to migration, and to explain their underlying conditions.
