Trans Identities in the French media
Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

Although French woman writer Colette was indifferent to and even critical of the feminist movement of the early 1900s, in the way she lived her life as in her fiction, she exemplified financial and social independence and shame-free sexuality, or what would be call today “gender fluidity”. This international conference will show how Colette represents a vibrant and radical expression of feminism in tune with the #MeToo spirit in today's society

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to BlackCounter-Representations, from 1945 until Today
The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

Dans le cadre du quatre-vingtième anniversaire de la fin de la guerre d'Espagne et du début de la Retirada, cette journée d'études internationale porte sur la/les mémoire(s) des exilés républicains espagnols en France, sur sa/leur transmission ou sa/leur non-transmission, sur les conflits qui peuvent y être associés, et sur la place de l’exil dans la construction identitaire des descendants d’exilés nés en France. L'hybridation culturelle et identitaire, ainsi que le lien entre intime et politique seront au coeur des réflexions proposées.

"Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s
Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives
Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

Expulsions, migrations, mobilités
Ce colloque entend reconsidérer l’histoire de l’Alsace après 1918 à partir de recherches récentes sur son histoire migratoire, qui incluent l’expulsion des Allemands et des Alsaciens germanophiles, les migrations de travail, les déplacements frontaliers, l’accueil de réfugiés dans les années 1930. Ces phénomènes migratoires divers, à différentes échelles, dépassant souvent les frontières de la région comme de la France (puisqu’ils touchèrent le pays de Bade, la Lorraine, la Ruhr, la Belgique) contribuèrent tous à redéfinir la place de l’Alsace dans la Troisième République et ses nouveaux liens à l’espace allemand.

Les intervenant se concentreront sur différentes périodes et situations clés telles que : les réalisateurs sans frontières qui ont travaillé des deux côtés de l’océan atlantique, la période révolutionnaire des années soixante et soixante-dix, les visions des critiques cinématographiques clés et aussi les enjeux contemporains liés à la circulation du cinéma latino-américain en France et du cinéma français en l’Amérique latine.

The history of fund raising and its uses (19th-21st centuries)
Née dans le sillage du romantisme, la collecte des archives orales se répand en France dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, les efforts ainsi déployés rejoignant ceux des lexicographes du siècle des Lumières qui notaient, au détour de la traduction d’un mot, telles coutume, croyance ou pratique. Président à toutes ces collectes la déploration de mondes en voie de disparition, menacés par l’urbanisation, le désenclavement des campagnes, la scolarisation et l’intrusion de l’écrit. Garder une trace de tous ces « monuments », de toutes ces « survivances » sert alors le projet d’une histoire de l’humanité et d’une élucidation de ses origines, projet commun aux explorateurs, missionnaires et colonisateurs investis outre-mer dans des entreprises ethnographiques.

Figures of Ancient Greece in France and Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries
Le présent colloque se propose d’étudier la présence et l’exploitation des figures de la Grèce ancienne en France et en Italie aux XIVe et XVe siècles, et les nouvelles formes d’ « actualité » qu’elles prennent dans les textes, avec l’évolution du regard et de l’interprétation des auteurs, avec aussi les décalages qui existent entre l’Italie et la France. Le corpus d’analyse pourra s’étendre des écritures de l’histoire au sens très large aux traductions / adaptations de textes latins et grecs, aux ouvrages didactiques, à la poésie et au théâtre.

Metz, capital of the Hebrew book, 1764-1870
Ce colloque international a vocation à faire le point sur les spécificités historiques, culturelles, linguistiques, archivistiques de l'impression hébraïque à Metz entre 1764 et 1870. À cette époque en effet, Metz est le principal centre d'impression hébraïque en France. Cette période connaît par ailleurs une évolution importante du judaïsme français, qui se ressent par exemple par la part croissante de textes imprimés tout ou partie en langue française chez les imprimeurs possédant des presses hébraïques. Le colloque est organisé par l'université de Lorraine (Centre écritures) en partenariat avec le Service régional de l'inventaire et les bibliothèques médiathèques de Metz.

By looking closely at the relationship—at times friendly, at times not—between France and England through fashion and textiles between 1700 and 1914, this conference will touch on a number of topics, including: the circulation (lawful or illicit) of knowledge, individuals, and objects; the diffusion – and cross-fertilization – of design models between the two countries via press, engravings, or fashion dolls; the importation of textiles and clothing; the phenomena of copying, espionage, and counterfeits; the pursuit of protectionist policies which aimed to limit imports from the rival nation.

Nous nous limiterons ici aux espaces de la francophonie, qui offrent un vaste champ d’études cohérent, mais cela n’empêchera pas – elle sera bien au contraire encouragée – une mise en perspective grâce à l’étude succincte d’autres aires géographiques et civilisationnelles.
