  Call for papers - Middle Ages

  History is a common good

  4th National Conference of the Italian Association of Public History

  In line with the Italian Public History Manifesto, approved after our association’s meeting in Pisa in June 2018, AIPH intends to contribute to the affirmation of a greater awareness of the value of historical knowledge, an essential resource for understanding the present, planning of the future and exercising full citizenship. The 4th AIPH National Conference of Venice-Mestre will create new opportunities for discussion and reflection between those who work with the past. The conference will examine ways in which history is present in society today, from universities to public places, in schools and learning institutions, in high and in popular culture and, finally, in the daily life of our communities.

  Youth and castles

  À partir de sources et de documents de différentes natures, il s'agit de désigner les jeunes occupants des châteaux mais aussi de chercher à cerner les caractéristiques de ces groupes avec un maximum de précision. Le statut et les fonctions : Ceux-ci sont conférés par la naissance, le sexe, la hiérarchie des noblesses et des bourgeoisies vivant au château. Un des axes de recherche de ce colloque se propose de situer ces catégories de jeunes dans leurs rôles auprès des adultes. Les destins : comment se fait l’entrée dans le monde des adultes et quel type d'existence attend ces jeunes au sortir d'une adolescence, réduite au minimum, passée au château ? L’empreinte sur les mémoires : se retrouve ici le problème de la définition de la jeunesse posée en préambule.

  Pour cette seconde édition des Rencontres autour de l'Archéologie Européenne (RAE), professionnels, étudiants et bénévoles en archéologie / histoire de l'art sont invités à se retrouver pour échanger sur le thème « Animation et valorisation en archéologie : à la rencontre des publics ». Outre une discussion sur l'avenir de l'archéologie dans différents pays européens et des impacts à moyen terme en France, les RAE sont également l'occasion de partager des outils utiles pour développer un réseau scientifique et estudiantin à travers l'Europe.

  Cette session sera consacrée aux « déménagements » qui jouaient un rôle majeur dans les relations sociales des peuples celtes : l'éducation des enfants assurée par une famille alliée (fosterage en anglais, pagerie en vieux français), les mariages exogames, les individus se portant caution personnelle pour un tiers, les otages interclaniques et internationaux..., soit une problématique trop rarement explorée jusqu'ici mais pourtant d'un très grand intérêt.

  International Medieval Congress

  Script is not a neutral communication medium. Scripts were particularly used throughout the Middle Ages to stage the idea of Empire, power and domination. The writing has the ability to connote authority and Empire and to inspire respect. On the other hand, the scriptural domain is a world in itself with its coherence and history. The idea of an ‘Empire of letters’ may have emerged within this world too. Both parts of this “empire of letters” are relevant for the palaeographical sessions on the specific thematic strand of ‘Empire’ organised at the International Medieval Congress 2014 in Leeds and sponsored by Apices and Cap Digital.

  Medieval Manuscript Miscellanies: Composition, Authorship, Use

  Case studies on particular medieval manuscript miscellanies written in any language are welcome at the workshop concentrating especially on three aspects: Composition: How do the contents fit together in specific cases? Is there a plan or a reason behind? If so, what does the selection tells about the compiler’s interests? Authorship: To what degree are the miscellany compilers and gatherers authors? Is there a personal touch discernable and interpretable? Use: How were these manuscripts actually used? Can a specific use of a particular miscellany be detected?Please, send a brief (300-400 words) abstract of the proposed 20-minute paper together with information on your affiliation and research interests to Lucie Doležalová at dolezalova@cts.cuni.cz by December 31, 2008.
