Advances and challenges of NLP (Natural Language Processing) for african languages
How far have we come?
This workshop will bring together NTeALan’s large community of members living in Cameroon and abroad, invited researchers, partners and other members of the scientific community. This workshop aims at bringing together professionals, researchers and experts in African languages and Natural Language Processing (NLP), whose research work focuses on machine learning techniques and electronic lexicography applied to NLP and language pedagogy/didactics. We will also discuss the main challenges that arise in this context for the constitution of corpora in African languages. We will define possible directions for future progress.

Dans le contexte général de la crise des idéologies et du manifeste annoncée par Claude Abastado, nous voudrons mettre en lumière les transformations structurelles du genre ainsi que celles des groupes littéraires et artistiques qui l’utilisent et le (re)pensent.

Cave art and world heritage in Sub-Saharan Africa
Le département des Affaires européennes et internationales et la direction générale des patrimoines du ministère de la Culture organisent le 31 mars 2020 à l’Institut national du patrimoine, à Paris, un séminaire international sur l’art rupestre et le patrimoine mondial en Afrique subsaharienne. L’objectif du séminaire sera d’exposer les défis, les enjeux de recherche, de conservation, de protection et de gestion durable des sites que peuvent susciter de tel type de bien. Cette journée sera l’occasion de partager les bonnes pratiques sur ces questions, à travers des cas concrets de biens d’Afrique subsaharienne déjà inscrits sur la liste du patrimoine mondial ou bien sur les listes indicatives.

Il appelle à un débat fécond qui, nourri de positionnements épistémologiques et d’orientations théoriques et méthodologiques de l’heure, éclaire les pratiques d’enseignement-apprentissage et profile des perspectives nouvelles et réalistes qui reposent sur la diversité des contextes camerounais.

The Becoming of Congo: Epistemologies, Practices, and Imaginaries
V International Congo Research Network Congress (15-16 September 2020)
The conference aims to bring together junior and senior scholars across the humanities and social sciences, sharing a common interest in the DRC. It specifically aims to provide space for transdisciplinary and comparative analyses and reflections, within and beyond Congolese Studies. This edition of the Congo Research network (CRN) focuses on the concept of “becoming”: the becoming of research on/around the Congo (new paths and new relations between "knowledges/epistemologies" and agents—academics, artists, writers, cultural operators, journalists and bloggers, activists and others); the becoming of Congolese culture (new places of creation and exhibition, new ways of sharing/transmitting knowledge and cultural practices); the becoming of land and questions of mobility, not only in the Congo, but also in Africa and the world (climate change and social justice).

Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries
Africa 2020
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

Africa 2020: Artistic, digital, and political creation in english-speaking African countries
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. The peer-reviewed journal of Aix-Marseille Université research centre on Anglophone Studies (LERMA), E-rea, has decided to seize the opportunity of Africa 2020 to dedicate a special issue to contemporary artistic, digital, and political creation in English-speaking African countries. Heeding Kenyan political analyst Nanjala Nyabola’s advice to eschew the too reductive ‘Africa rising’ and ‘Africa failing’ narratives in favour of ‘Africa being’ stories, this special issue wishes to focus on “stories reflecting the ambivalence, complexity, challenges and opportunities of African societ[ies] in an increasingly connected world”.

Le groupement d’intérêt scientifique « Études africaines en France » organise ses sixièmes rencontres (REAF). Ces rencontres sont une invitation à dépasser les cloisonnements disciplinaires et institutionnels. Elles offrent l’occasion aux spécialistes issu·e·s de différentes disciplines en sciences humaines et sociales d’échanger autour de thèmes de recherche en commun en confrontant les approches de travail, les périodes historiques, les zones géographiques du continent. En rassemblant des chercheur·e·s d’horizons divers, travaillant en France et partout dans le monde, les REAF constituent également un espace pour améliorer la visibilité des travaux que mènent les chercheur·e·s. Ces rencontres sont ouvertes à toutes formes d'écriture de la recherche.

Le présent projet d’ouvrage, inspiré d’une étude menée par le Ministère de la recherche scientifique et de l’innovation du Cameroun à travers le Centre national d’éducation, entend analyser dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire, les stratégies intelligentes et résilientes de réhabilitation des personnes déplacées rendues vulnérables et vivant dans des environnements et des conditions qui fragilisent considérablement leur participation sociale, culturelle, économique et juridico-politique dans la société camerounaise. Elles doivent intégrer le paradigme selon lequel dans l’idée d’échapper à la pauvreté, les hommes vont à la conquête du pouvoir au moyen d’entreprises rentrant dans le cadre de la violence génératrice de revenus.

6th international conference of the African Discourse network
Dans un contexte d’instantanéité de l’information et de mondialisation des médias, la parole politique en Afrique francophone évolue très rapidement : portée par de nouveaux acteurs, ses fonctionnements discursifs sont souvent inédits. Au confluent des cultures africaines et européennes, voix politiques et voies de diffusion font émerger de nouvelles formes de productions discursives hétérogènes dont l’avenir du continent africain dépendra étroitement. Le réseau Discours d’Afrique propose des regards croisés pour répondre à une question cruciale : quelles approches pour quels corpus ? Toutes les disciplines concernées par le colloque (sciences du langage, sciences de l’information et de la communication, littérature et sciences humaines et sociales) sont donc les bienvenues.

Global Congo - the aesthetics and politics of world literature
Esthétiques et politiques d'une littérature mondiale
In this symposium, we suggest thinking of the Congo as a literary center. First, for the writers of the diaspora: be they in Brussels, in Graz or in Louisiana, the Congo seems to function as a pole of attraction, both textually and physically. A great number of languages intertwine (Chinese is one of them), and contemporary literature attests this cultural richness. Richard Ali A Mutu, for example, writes in Lingala and is translated into English ; Jean Bofane and Fiston Mujila write in French, but their novels are translated in a dozen languages ; JJ Bola writes in English. How does this linguistic parameter influence their writings? How do the writers consider the European languages and the local languages (Lingala, Ciluba, Swahili) ? Is the choice of a language the consequence of a political commitment, or does it emerge from the observation of the plurilingual character of the Congolese society? Moreover, approaching the Congolese literary space in a World Literature perspective requires us to broaden the very notion of “literature”.

This symposium will take stock of the theoretical ambition of this programme, relative to the disciplinary tools available to us today, to disclose, to distinguish and above all to ponder the historical connections established. If the plants, epidemics, commercial goods or written materials are proof of often-forgotten connections, they inform us only indirectly on the intensity and consequences of these economic, political and cultural connections for the societies of Southern, Eastern or Western Africa. Starting from this observation, the historians, archaeologists, linguists, and philologists involved in this release will reflect on multidisciplinary models that go beyond the observation of a connection and switch towards a more integrative concept of “route,” understood, in the broader sense, as a connection in progress. I this respect, the third and final objective of this symposium will stimulate further reflection on the routes that crisscrossed medieval Africa, and the practices, mobilities, and representations that they created.

Organising monastic life in East Africa from late Antiquity to the Middle Ages (Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, 4th-16th century)
Ce séminaire organisé par l’École française de Rome et le Pontificio Istituto Orientale depuis 2018 est dédié à l’étude du monachisme en Afrique orientale de l’Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge. Cette deuxième session est consacrée à la question de l’organisation de la vie monastique en Égypte, Nubie et Éthiopie et privilégie les études de cas. Les rencontres mensuelles entendent mieux identifier et saisir les normes et les modalités pratiques qui régissent l’administration, la gestion, le contrôle et l’aménagement des institutions monastiques. Une attention particulière sera accordée à la vie quotidienne des moines et des moniales en Afrique orientale dont certains aspects demeurent largement méconnus.

The objective of this workshop is to create the conditions for the emergence of a scientific community using digital collaborative tools within Ethiopian studies. There is no need to recall the scientific and technological context in which we live to understand the importance and challenges of this methodological revolution. Many initiatives have emerged over the past two decades, both in terms of the availability of digitized documentation and the tools to use it. After the first experiments, interoperability and sharing have become the key words, and Ethiopian studies must respond to these good practices.

The project “Gangs, Gangsters, and Ganglands: Towards a Global Comparative Ethnography” (GANGS) aims to develop a systematic comparative investigation of global gang dynamics, to better understand why they emerge, how they evolve over time, whether they are associated with particular urban configurations, how and why individuals join gangs, and what impact this has on their potential futures. It draws on ethnographic research carried out in Nicaragua, South Africa, and France, adopting an explicitly tripartite focus on “Gangs”, “Gangsters”, and “Ganglands” in order to better explore the interplay between group, individual, and contextual factors. The first will consider the organisational dynamics of gangs, the second will focus on individual gang members and their trajectories before, during, and after their involvement in a gang, while the third will reflect on the contexts within which gangs emerge and evolve.

Information and communication technologies in West-African transport and exchanges
Les technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC) participent à la révolution numérique qui bouleverse les relations humaines, les échanges commerciaux et les rapports politiques. Elles contribuent à modifier les configurations territoriales et les relations entre les personnes qui y vivent : leurs apllications sont multiples. Contrairement aux préjugés longtemps véhiculés, la révolution numérique est bien en marche en Afrique au Sud du Sahara. Le numérique est donc perçu comme un instrument de développement, de fluidité logistique et d'aménagement des territoires. Cette troisième édition du colloque international Marport ambitionne de poser les questions liées à la diffusion généralisée de l'économie digitale dans le secteur de la logistique.
