The circulation, distribution, and reproduction of images and texts in periodicals at the turn of the century (1870-1930)

La fin du XIX^e siècle peut être considérée comme l’achèvement d’un ensemble de processus de systématisation et de rationalisation des techniques de production et de diffusion de l’imprimé : au niveau technique, la mise au point des procédés de reproduction photomécanique rendant possible la reproduction à faible coût et sans perte d’information des images et des textes ; au niveau rhétorique, le journalisme valorise des formes simples, directes, qui augmentent l’efficacité communicationnelle. La question que souhaite soulever ce colloque est celle de la pertinence de l’application de la notion de viralité à la culture (et plus particulièrement la culture de la presse) au tournant des XIX^e et XX^e siècles.

ddh20 : Data and Digital Humanities 2020

The digital humanities offer a particularly rich research field of studies for data processing, apart from those of the hard sciences and the social sciences. Indeed, the humanities are rarely subject to privacy principles (privacy by design, GDPR…) that affect most social science works and are not just about digital or binary data. Moreover, in DH the data pre-exist and are most often already known if they are not collected and formalized. In this specific context, we propose in this track to question the practices resulting from the constitution of corpus and uses of data in humanities.

Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

Inspired by the success of the first Art Markets Summer School held in Lyon in June 2019, a second edition of this unique research, training and networking experience will take place in July 2020 in Belgium. A team of international experts from relevant fields such art history, economics, sociology, finance and digital humanities will engage with participants with an academic or professional interest in the global art market. An exciting program combining lectures, workshops and field trips will familiarize the participants with the nature and structure of the art market system. Attention will be given to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the various actors in the art market and the available methodological tools to study this fascinating yet complex phenomenon. This immersive experience will inspire and shape new interdisciplinary thinking about the emergence, history and dynamics of art markets around the world.

Pagaille est une revue numérique biannuelle indépendante de littératures et médias comparés, fondée par des chercheuses et chercheurs en littératures comparées. Elle a pour objectif de promouvoir l’approche comparatiste dans le champ des sciences humaines et sociales. Comme son nom l’indique, la revue entend explorer des champs particulièrement riches de la recherche actuelle, des espaces intellectuels en pagaille au sein desquels le comparatisme entend se frayer un chemin et apporter un éclairage spécifique. À ce titre, les démarches inter-, intra-, et transmédiales ont toute leur place dans la revue. Le second numéro de la revue est consacré à la question des humanités numériques.

Ancient and contemporary press in the digital age

Médias 19 – Numapresse congress

Le projet scientifique franco-québécois Médias 19, articulé autour de la plateforme numérique www.medias19.org, a été le cadre de développement d’une réflexion, depuis 2011, sur les pratiques journalistiques au XIX^e siècle, sur la valorisation et l’analyse des corpus, ainsi que sur l’étude du développement de la culture médiatique dans l’espace francophone. Depuis 2017, le projet scientifique international Numapresse , ambitionne de proposer une nouvelle histoire culturelle et littéraire de la presse française, du XIX^e siècle à nos jours, en mobilisant les grands corpus de presse numérisés et les nouveaux outils de text et data mining. Ce congrès, organisé est l’occasion de convier les chercheurs à faire état de la recherche actuelle.

Translating E-Lit?

International Conference (Jan. 16 and 17, 2020, Paris 8 University, France)

The main focus of this conference will be translation as process, rather than as a mere product, which will prompt us to apprehend translated works as belonging to one or several networks, contexts and translational cultures. In short, translation is a concept that throws new light onto the exchanges and differences pertaining to contemporary digital literary culture. Contemporary digital literary culture mobilizes multiple operations: it involves translation across languages, but includes circulations characteristic of other translational issues at large: exchanges between interfaces, media, codes, institutions, cultural perspectives, artistic and archiving practices. In turn, digital forms of textuality share a certain number of aspects within ubiquitous environments, which means that translational processes will lead us to consider creative practices that stand beyond the traditional field of literature.

En novembre 2018 s’est tenu à Toulouse (Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès et partenaires) le colloque international CinéDesign 2, deuxième événement organisé par le groupe de recherche CinéDesign. Depuis 2016, le groupe propose des événements d’échange et de travail autour des disciplines du cinéma et du design, et a organisé dans cette optique une première journée d’étude en 2016, suivie d’une publication rapidement parue en 2017. Suite au colloque de 2018, nous ne souhaitons pas seulement réaliser des actes conventionnels, mais ambitionnons de rassembler une publication de recherche et un complément encyclopédique inventoriant objets impossibles, impensables et à penser, entre design et cinéma. Il s’agit donc d’actes du colloque, mais aussi d’une publication qui s’ouvre à d’autres contributions, y compris de chercheur/se/s n’ayant pas participé à l’événement.

Two postdoc research grants

Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.
