It focuses on the polysemous and discussed term ‘border’. For its fifth issue, the authors are invited to write on the theme “Edges of gender”.

Medieval literary seminar
Beaucoup d’œuvres médiévales nous sont parvenues inachevées, pour ne citer que les exemples notoires du Conte du graal, du Tristan de Béroul ou du Roman de la rose de Guillaume de Lorris. Au-delà des raisons accidentelles – mort de l’auteur, lacune de la tradition manuscrite – difficilement mesurables, on questionnera la pertinence de la notion d’achèvement pour les œuvres médiévales. Comment pense-t-on, au Moyen Âge, la fin d’une œuvre ? Cette dernière doit-t-elle nécessairement aboutir à une forme close qui seule achèverait de lui donner un sens ? Est-ce l’achèvement, le fait de mener l’œuvre à chief, de lui donner par-là une forme de couronnement, qui fait l’œuvre ? La question de l’achèvement de l’œuvre soulève celle de l’achèvement du sens.On envisagera les œuvres inachevées –ou supposées telles– qui travaillent sans fin « l’impossibilité d’en finir », et la question des continuations qui les prolongent. Laisser inachevé, donc, pour pouvoir toujours recommencer. S’interrompre, s’arrêter de dire pour laisser la place au « contre-dit ». À l’inverse, comment clore ? Comment mettre un terme à l’écriture, sortir de l’œuvre ?

Disguise, dressing-up and transformations
Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Proof: procedures, protocols, processes
Pour la quatrième année consécutive, l’Association des doctorants du Centre d’études supérieures de la Renaissance (ADCESR) organise à Tours ses rencontres doctorales pluridisciplinaires. Cette année les journées d’étude porteront sur le thème de la preuve à la Renaissance. La notion de preuve a surtout été thématisée par les historiens du droit et des sciences. Un effort de formalisation des protocoles s’observe en effet à la Renaissance, à travers la multiplication des traités juridiques cherchant à régler l’usage des modi probationum comme dans la métamorphose du statut de l’observation dans les sciences physiques et la médecine. Les discussions autour de l’écriture de la preuve s’inscrivent ainsi dans un ensemble de pratiques professionnelles et institutionnelles qu’il s’agira de mettre en lumière. Le cadre pluridisciplinaire de cette journée d’étude offre l’occasion d’élargir l’examen à l’ensemble des champs du savoir et de la pratique, afin d’analyser la preuve et les modes de son établissement.

For this special issue of Vox medii aevi, dedicated to the modern interpretations of medieval humour, comedy, and laughter, we invite original research addressing the subjects of perception and appropriateness of laughter in the eyes of the church and lay authors and authorities; laughter as a form of mystical experience; ritualized laughter; laughter as a didactic weapon; laughter as an instrument of social control; and gendered experiences of laughter.

S’inscrivant dans le sillage des réflexions menées au sein de son équipe d’accueil, la dixième journée des doctorants d’Ameriber (Université Bordeaux Montaigne) invitera les participants à s'interroger sur la notion d’autorité et sur son rapport à la transmission dans une période allant du Moyen Âge à nos jours. La journée d’étude entend réfléchir, dans une perspective diachronique et interdisciplinaire, sur l’autorité considérée à la fois comme condition et comme objet de la transmission. Parce qu’elle offre un reflet de la société dans laquelle elle se manifeste, nous tenterons de saisir la dynamique de l’autorité, ses formes, ses effets et ses limites. Nous interrogerons les mécanismes et les stratégies par lesquels s’acquiert, voire se construit, l’autorité et chercherons à saisir son rôle ainsi que celui de sa transmission dans des aires culturelles et géographiques variées.

Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

A handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches
On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages
The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Cette perfection du monde, inséparable de sa clôture et de son intégrité, semble aussi avoir été pensée comme principe de la création humaine. Partant de réflexions sur le haut Moyen Âge, l’objectif de cette journée d’étude sera de suivre la pertinence, la survivance et peut-être l’effacement et le remplacement de ce schéma de pensée sur toute la période médiévale.

Visibility of religious difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean
Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies, nº 7 (2020)
The goal of this volume is to show ways in which religion marked a perceptible difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. Considering visibility in the wider sense of the word -also including acoustic perception and other aspects that would differentiate them- religion made people either from their own will or under external coercion- visible within medieval societies. The tension between visibility through othering or self-labelling, and invisibility through cultural assimilation was a constant in the complex medieval cities and rural areas. It also carried on beyond the medieval period, sometimes reproducing previous problems, sometimes in the shape of new challenges. How did these dynamics play out? Can common patterns be found? What caused them to come into play? Where do we observe compliance or reluctance towards the aforementioned normative orders? Do we see spatial manifestations of these tensions? These (and other) questions may be addressed in case studies from different geographic areas and time periods.

Guido delle Colonne and his Reception in Medieval Europe
Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae has been a phenomenal success since its composition at the end of the 13th century. Nevertheless, academic studies remain limited and questions remain open about the author himself (judge, historian and poet?), about his sources – including the essential Trojan novel in verse by Benoît de Saint Maure –, about the construction and style of his work and about its intents in a particularly troubled period. While significant progress has been made in recent years, studies are far from being exhaustive and the case deserve to be considered anew. Historia's interest lies in particular in the translations, adaptations and summaries it generated throughout Europe until the 17th century. This international conference aims thus to shed new lights on the original text as well as on the diversity of its appropriations, between filiation and emancipation. In this regard, the spectacular diffusion has contributed to strenghten a Trojan European literature.

Faisant suite aux colloques consacrés aux thèmes du « témoignage » (octobre 2016), de la « tempérance » (mars 2018) et de l’« apostolat » (février 2019) dans le christianisme, l’Institut d’Étude des Faits Religieux (IEFR) consacrera son prochain colloque au thème de la « charité » (chrétienne, musulmane, juive ou laïque), de la Bible à jours. L’objet du présent colloque sera de mettre en évidence les différentes manières de comprendre le terme « charité », ses pratiques et ses usages variés, dans les champs de l’argumentation et de la recherche.
