Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960
Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

The Ancient and the New Silk Roads: Discourse and Knowledge
Les Routes de la Soie (et du Corridor) constituent un des plus importants réseaux de communication et de développement humain au monde. Ces routes ont depuis toujours participé à la connexion de plusieurs espaces, régions, pays, continents et à la construction d’anciennes et nouvelles civilisations et sociétés. S’étendant de l’Extrême-Orient, au Proche-Orient et au Moyen-Orient jusqu’en Afrique et en Europe, notamment méditerranéenne, ces routes continuent de fournir de considérables efforts pour rapprocher l’Orient et l’Occident, l’Est et l’Ouest et même le Nord et le Sud avec leurs multiples stratégies de développement et d’ouverture sur de nouveaux horizons, cultures, empires (chinois, romain, arabe, musulman, etc.) et espaces depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours. Ce rapprochement a commencé par le commerce à courte puis à longue distance avec la circulation des matériaux, des biens et des marchandises de valeur (porcelaine, thé, épices, soie, etc.), tout en conduisant aussi à la circulation des idées, des savoirs et savoir-faire dans différents domaines (sciences, littérature, architecture, urbanisme, économie, etc.).

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

The Fabergé Museum in Saint Petersburg owns the world's largest collection of works by Carl Fabergé, including nine of the famous imperial easter eggs, and aims to become the main international platform for the study of the art and life of the famous jeweler. In this year marking the 170th anniversary of Carl Fabergé, the museum dedicated its annual academic conference to Carl Fabergé, his firm's activities in Russia and abroad, its place within Russian culture as well as to Fabergé's influence on modern and contemporary jeweler’s art.

Within the rapidly expanding area of research on food and foodways, the medieval eastern Mediterranean is still very much an unexplored area. The aim of the POMEDOR project (People, Pottery and Food in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean) was to explore this new field in a multidisciplinary way and to stimulate further research.

The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989
This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

Transnational History and Japan
L'histoire globale ou transnationale est aujourd'hui une des branches les plus fécondes des recherches historiques. Cependant, l'histoire transnationale est encore centrée sur le monde atlantique. L'exclusion de l'Asie de l'Est, et en particulier du Japon, montre des lacunes flagrantes. Sur ce marché international des idées, le Japon a joué un rôle déterminant en tant que preneur, mais également en tant que producteur de connaissances transnationales. En retour, les pays occidentaux ont étudié les modèles japonais de mobilisation nationale, de même que d'autres pays d'Asie le feront plus tard au cours du XXème siècle.

Rethinking the Family in Medieval Egypt
Special issue of Annales islamologiques 47
L’ambition de ce dossier est d’inviter à repenser l’histoire de la famille dans l’Islam médiéval. En limitant les contributions à l’Égypte, on entend profiter d’une configuration documentaire exceptionnelle pour favoriser la contextualisation d’un objet trop souvent envisagé comme une évidence, égale et semblable d’une époque à l’autre. On abordera par exemple l’histoire de la parenté et de la formation du groupe familial ; l’histoire de l’héritage, des normes légales et des pratiques sociales en matière patrimoniale, mais aussi des autres formes de transmission familiale (des biens, des pratiques, des savoirs) ; l’histoire de l’éducation, de l’apprentissage et plus largement celle de l’enfance ; l’histoire des rôles sociaux au sein de la famille et de leurs représentations collectives. Les propositions sont à envoyer avant le 30 novembre 2011. Une table ronde réunira les auteurs à Montpellier en mai 2012.
