Conference, symposium - History
This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

The Smaller European Powers and China in the Cold War, 1949-1989
This international conference aims to examine the policies of the smaller European powers towards China – and vice versa – during the Cold War. Thereby it focuses, on the European side, on both Western and Eastern Europe – regardless of whether a country was part of the NATO or the Warsaw Pact. Meanwhile, on the Chinese side, the conference proposes to include both Chinas, namely the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (RoC). While this should allow for the analysis of different relational constellations, the chronological framework – that ranges from the Communist victory in China in 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989 – should enable us to identify policy shifts and patterns.

The Cold War and Entertainment Television
An essential dimension of the Cold War took place in the realm of ideas and culture. A great deal of work, for example, has been done on cinema, especially with regard to the United States although other nations, both East and West, have received increasing attention. But with certain noteworthy exceptions (primarily in the areas of science fiction and espionage series) relatively little has been done on this subject in relation to television. Yet, television was a technology and popular cultural form that emerged during the Cold War. This project hopes to rectify that absence by providing a forum for examining the impact of the Cold War on entertainment television. We intend to underline the comparative aspect by studying programs from both blocs – without forgetting, of course, the outsize impact of American television.

Common Experiences, Common Desires ? Tracing an Intellectual History between China and Africa

In his 1954 presentation to dignitaries from across Asia and Africa, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai acknowledged the differences between the two cultural spheres; nevertheless, Zhou stressed, a more important factor in all future relations should be the “common experiences and desires” of people from across the two continents to create a new world from the ashes of war and colonialism. Building on Zhou’s insight into commonalities of experience, this presentation will trace the cultural intersections that have existed between China and African since the 1920s.

L’Arabie saoudite est un pays méconnu qui prend aujourd’hui une importance croissante sur la scène internationale. Ce « Café jeunes chercheurs » abordera la question d'une identité saoudienne spécifique, laquelle façonne les perceptions et détermine les stratégies saoudiennes sur le plan interne comme externe. Dans un premier temps, sera questionné la construction de « nouveaux concepts sur l’identité et les valeurs saoudiennes » dans les musées du Royaume depuis 1963. Dans un second temps, sera abordé à la politique étrangère du Royaume, laquelle est déterminée par ses préoccupations sécuritaires.

Sino-African spaces of interaction
Cette seconde journée du séminaire de l'ANR EsCA (Espaces de la culture chinoise en Afrique : diffusion, agencements, interactions), programme étudiant les modalités socio-culturelles d'interaction entre ressortissants chinois et africains, à la fois à l'échelle continentale et au travers de l'analyse de trois pays (Afrique du Sud, Cameroun, Mali) est consacrée à la restitution des premières données de terrain (juillet-décembre 2012) et à leur analyse croisée par des chercheurs européens ou internationaux spécialistes de champs connexes. Trois thématiques principales seront abordées : les constructions et relations entre « élites » chinoises et africaines, les differents espaces du soft power et parmi eux, les appropriations de la médecine chinoise traditionnelle.

South Asia, another name for the Indian Subcontinent, is a recent concept (only about six decades old), forged outside the region in the wake of the establishment of area studies by American universities. While it may be preferred to Indian subcontinent for its political neutrality, it is nonetheless a contested concept, both externally and internally. Whether in South Asia itself or in international institutions or research centres outside the region, there is no general consensus about the countries the concept encompasses: it primarily refers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, as per the definition of the SAARC, which has however included Afghanistan lately (2005) among its members. Some would also include Burma (Myanmar) as it was a province of British India till 1937. Internally, the concept is contested on the political level but in a fairly paradoxical way: on the one hand, as a concept closely associated with India, it is in some contexts rejected by its neighbours; on the other hand, neighbouring countries (especially Nepal and Sri Lanka) have been instrumental in making the concept exist through the creation of journals, associations, and websites that mobilise the term. -

Cette nouvelle journée d'études d'e-LLA s'intéressera aux influences non réciproques qui passent inaperçues, soit qu'elles appartiennent à des genres mineurs, soit que leur furtivité ne leur permette pas de s'inscrire dans la postérité, soit que les créateurs et les penseurs eux-mêmes n'en aient pas conscience. Notre réflexion s'attachera à observer comment la création peut naître de ces influences fugaces, comment ce qui semble inconséquent peut se révéler indispensable dans le processus créatif. -

Challenges, Hopes and Limitations
Dans le cadre du cinquantenaire des décolonisations africaines, la chaire Lucienne-Cnockaert en histoire de l’Europe contemporaine et de l’Afrique organisera les 17-18 novembre 2011 un colloque intitulé « Le Tiers Monde au temps de la décolonisation : enjeux, espoirs et limites ». Ce colloque entend étudier l’ampleur et la complexité des responsabilités et des défis et la diversité des expériences de gestion multiforme de l’indépendance dans les sociétés postcoloniales d’Afrique, d’Amérique latine et d’Asie.In consideration of the fiftieth anniversary of the decolonization of several African countries, the Lucienne-Cnockaert Research Chair in Modern History of European and Africa will be holding a conference entitled Decolonization in the Third World: Challenges, Hopes and Limitations on 17-18 November 2011. This conference will be an opportunity to study the magnitude and complexity of the responsibilities and challenges, and the various administrative paths chosen by the post-colonial societies of Africa, Asia and Latin America. -

L'université d'Oran, Algérie, organise les 29 et 30 Novembre 2008 un colloque international à l'occasion du bicentenaire de l'Émir Abdelkader (1808-2008), sur le thème: « le legs de l'Émir Abdelkader entre particularisme et universalité : approches analytiques ». Cet évènement scientifique à pour but de rassembler un grand nombre d'universitaires de différentes disciplines et d'horizons divers pour procéder, pendant les deux journées que durera le colloque, à une analyse approfondie de l'héritage historique, intellectuel, humaniste, spirituel et moral de ce grand personnage du XIXè siècle.Les langues du colloque sont l'arabe, le français et l'anglais.
