Call for papers - Early modern
Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas
Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom
Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

For its second issue, Regards launches a call for papers for its thematic dossier as well as for its Varia section.

Religious practices, memory and identities in the Greco-Roman world
Les liens du fait religieux avec le social et les conduites de vie constituent, dans les mondes antiques comme pour d’autres périodes de l’histoire, un thème privilégié de l’histoire culturelle. Dans ce domaine, il est possible en particulier de chercher à comprendre dans la diachronie les modalités de l’interaction entre la construction d’identités par les représentations et le jeu des pratiques religieuses, dans une optique d’histoire de la mémoire. Dans un cadre élargi au monde gréco-romain et sur le temps long, il s’agira, selon une démarche visant à aborder les dynamiques rituelles sous l’angle de leurs altérations et restaurations historiques, de scruter les efforts de mémoire dont nos sources - tant littéraires qu’épigraphiques, papyrologiques ou archéologiques - témoignent dans la sphère des pratiques religieuses, en lien avec la construction des identités.

Organisé par des chercheurs en sciences de l’information et de la communication, ce colloque entend avoir sur la question de l’autre et de la diversité une approche transdisciplinaire, en vue de faire se rencontrer des approches issues de toutes cultures et de toutes orientations, pour élaborer une approche aussi riche que possible de l’autre et de la multiplicité des places qu’il occupe dans l’espace public et des images qui y sont données de lui.

The history of fund raising and its uses (19th-21st centuries)
Née dans le sillage du romantisme, la collecte des archives orales se répand en France dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, les efforts ainsi déployés rejoignant ceux des lexicographes du siècle des Lumières qui notaient, au détour de la traduction d’un mot, telles coutume, croyance ou pratique. Président à toutes ces collectes la déploration de mondes en voie de disparition, menacés par l’urbanisation, le désenclavement des campagnes, la scolarisation et l’intrusion de l’écrit. Garder une trace de tous ces « monuments », de toutes ces « survivances » sert alors le projet d’une histoire de l’humanité et d’une élucidation de ses origines, projet commun aux explorateurs, missionnaires et colonisateurs investis outre-mer dans des entreprises ethnographiques.

Ancient worlds and new perspectives
L’unité de recherche ANHIMA (Anthropologie et histoire des mondes antiques) à partir de l’expérience des programmes qui y sont menés, a souhaité, pour ce colloque, situer et rendre visibles les résultats des recherches récentes ; des recherches qui non seulement renouvellent profondément notre connaissance du passé antique, mais qui, en outre, animent notre regard sur la modernité. En effet, aujourd’hui encore, l’Antiquité est souvent mobilisée pour justifier des modèles présentés comme fondateurs de notre vie en commun : la citoyenneté, la relation entre les hommes et les femmes, la sexualité, la relation à la politique et au spectacle, etc. Or, dans ces domaines, les poncifs sont nombreux et révèlent souvent la méconnaissance des résultats de la recherche récente sur l’Antiquité classique.

Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

Water Management in the Mediterranean during the 1st Millennium BC
IIIe symposium international HYDRΩMED
The aim of the meeting is to compare the different modes of adaptation of the Ancient Mediterranean populations to the environmental resources, especially their hydric resources. In a climate marked by unequal distribution of water, the ancient societies, whether Phoenician-Punic, Greek or Etruscan, responded in different ways to the various situations, let alone the hydric crises which may have affected them. The meeting will associate systemic theoretical reflections as well as case studies on ancient sites, to outline the mutations and the permanencies, the possible technological transfers from one society to another. Here, as in other fields of human activity, we shall query the existence of an ancient Mediterranean koine around the knowledge and the technical practices, around the cultural and cultural traditions. The chronology considered runs from the 8th to the 1st century BC, i.e. before the diffusion of the Roman models and techniques.

Πολυμαθία et πολυτροπία in the Antonine period
Apulée de Madaure, « beau philosophe, très éloquent tant dans la langue grecque que la latine » (Apol. 4, 1) a vécu, selon une approximation vraisemblable, entre 125 et 180. Par là, il apparaît comme un acteur éminent de la culture impériale de l’époque antonine. La recherche récente a posé des jalons importants en replaçant l’auteur dans le contexte de la « seconde sophistique », un courant culturel qui s’est surtout exprimé en grec, aux II° et III° siècles. Mais des nuances, des précisions et des compléments restent à apporter : d’autres pistes fécondes sont apparues ou ont été renouvelées très récemment, comme sa proximité intellectuelle et biographique avec Aulu-Gelle, son identité provinciale , son rapport au langage et aux langues , son rapport au platonisme, et son attrait pour la chose religieuse.

La remise du prix Marc de Montalembert 2015 sera effectuée par Philippe Morel, professeur d’histoire d’art moderne et directeur du Centre d’histoire de l’art de la Renaissance à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, membre senior de l’Institut universitaire de France. Le lauréat est Joana Barreto, docteur en histoire de l’art moderne de l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et professeur d’histoire-géographie au lycée des Arènes de Toulouse, pour son projet de recherche « Naples, carrefour artistique entre Occident, Afrique et Orient ».

L'union de l'Heptanèse à la Grèce (1864) : résonances culturelles d'une manœuvre diplomatique
Première expansion territoriale du royaume de Grèce, la concession du protectorat britannique des Sept-Îles en 1864 est liée à l’accession de la famille danoise des Glücksbourg au trône, suite au départ de la dynastie bavaroise. Intégrée sous conditions au canon national grec, la culture ionienne trouve pleinement son sens dans le cadre plus vaste du patrimoine européen. À l’occasion des 150 ans de l’union de l’Heptanèse à la Grèce, ce colloque international se propose de promouvoir un dialogue interdisciplinaire pour réinscrire cet événement dans l’histoire culturelle de l’Europe du Sud-Est et de la Méditerranée orientale.
