Censorship and blind spots: the BBC’s silences
The BBC's reputation for impartiality and independence is one of the cornerstones of its value system, which also underpins its self-declared mission to "inform, educate, and entertain". However, these values have constantly been redefined as several forms of censorship and self-censorship have been applied in the context of conflict with political or economic powers. This means that the role and independence of the BBC as a public service needs to be questioned and the grey areas and silences of the BBC from its creation in 1922 to the beginning of its digital era in 1995 need to be the objects of inquiry.

Founding, selecting, defending: how to make democracy survive (1918-1960)?
Ce colloque international s’inscrit dans le projet de formation-recherche « Quelle démocratie ? La réflexion sur la crise, la modernisation et les limites de la démocratie en Allemagne, en France, en Angleterre et en Europe centrale entre 1919 et 1939 ». Ce projet pluridisciplinaire propose de revenir sur les réflexions autour de la démocratie de l’entre-deux-guerres en s’intéressant particulièrement aux discours critiques et aux projets de réformes issus du camp démocratique au sens large. Sa démarche consiste à insérer ces discours dans leurs contextes historique, idéologique et socio-culturel, tout en s’intéressant également à leur impact sur la vie politique et sociale de l’époque. Dans la logique de ce projet, ce colloque portera sur la question de l’enracinement démocratique, c’est-à-dire sur la question des moyens à mettre en œuvre pour faire survivre une démocratie en milieu (potentiellement) hostile.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

Organised jointly by the MIMMOC (Université de Poitiers) and the CECILLE (Université de Lille), the conference will also adopt a comparative approach and we welcome submissions focused on the upper chambers of different countries.

Socio-Political Discourses in Art as a Tool and Framework for Institutions
Les présentations des participants inviteront à réfléchir à l’intersection entre l’intégration des minorités au sein de la société britannique sous le prisme de l’art, qu’ils soient populaires ou impulsés par les pouvoirs publics et à nous interroger sur l’analyse filmique des minorités en compagnie de spécialistes tels que Rosalind Galt et Karl Schoonover. Nous nous efforcerons de comprendre dans quelle mesure la culture et les arts peuvent servir un processus social d’intégration et d’inclusion des minorités, ou au contraire essentialisent les différences de l’autre. Les propositions pourront éventuellement s’intéresser aux dimensions culturelles, socio-économiques et politiques de cette intersection complexe.

Society, culture, community in the United Kingdom (1970-79)
This two-day conference focusing on British society of the 1970s seeks to enlarge and to alter perspectives on the period. The intention is to examine the dynamic of contradiction, inventiveness and tensions that is at work. The intention of the conference-organizers is to circumvent and thus question any “teleological” or linear reading of the period in terms of the necessary “coming of Thatcherism” in the United Kingdom, where the politics and culture of the period are read as so many symptoms or omens of the 1979 election result. The aim is to focus on the plurality of conflicting possibilities evident in the period, and therefore on the contingency of outcomes.

Gender, Women and the Conservative Party, 1880s to the Present
This two-day international conference explores the relationship between women and conservatism since the late 19th century. In the media frenzy and the re-enactment of the visceral political divisions of the 1980s that greeted the death of Margaret Thatcher in April, 2013, it soon became clear that Britain’s first woman Prime Minister was being portrayed as an aberrant figure who had emerged from a party of men. It appeared that the media and the public had not been well enough served by academics in making sense of and contextualizing the Thatcher phenomenon and, more broadly, the paradoxical sexual politics of the Right.

Womanhood and the "Woman Problem" in the interwar period

L’historiographie britannique a longtemps accrédité l’idée d’un « recul » dans les avancées du mouvement féministe dans les années d’entre-deux guerres, plus spécifiquement et paradoxalement après la loi sur le droit de vote des femmes en 1928 : il y aurait eu un « backlash » contre le féminisme et la décennie des années trente marquerait un repli sur un féminisme dit domestique, c’est-à-dire une valorisation de la femme dans ses fonctions maternelles et domestiques. Il s’agit d’établir un regard croisé sur la construction de la condition et de la citoyenneté féminine dans les deux pays, et de mettre en perspective critique l’idée d’un « backlash » et d’un « woman problem » comme grilles de lecture pour comprendre la condition sociale et politique des femmes pendant les années 1930.

Il s'agit d'une journée d'études organisée par le département de musique de l'université d'Evry-val-d'Essonne et le laboratoire de recherche RASM (Recherche art spectacle musique). La matinée sera consacrée à l’étude du cadre historique et social des années 1960 en Grande-Bretagne ; l’après-midi, les interventions porteront sur les aspects spécifiquement musicaux (influences, techniques d’enregistrement et de composition, etc.). Governance and Public Policies in the Contemporary United Kingdom
The purpose of this conference is to study the notion of governance in a specific time and space context: the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2014. The evolution of governance in British public policies will be questioned. Participants will be invited to rethink the transformations of public and State action, especially in the sectors that have been reformed (health, housing, education, energy and urban policy), faced with the imperatives of “devolution”, pressure from international trade dynamics, and the growing influence of the European Union and intergovernmental agencies. The forthcoming general elections provide an opportunity to take stock of the research on public policy management in the field of British studies.

The British Experience (1919 1984)
Alors qu’historiens de l’Empire et spécialistes d’histoire ouvrière se sont longtemps ignorés, le moment semble venu (si l’on en croit Bernard Porter ou Catherine Hall) d’une « histoire sociale de l’Empire » et donc, pourquoi pas, d’une « histoire sociale de la décolonisation » – dont Frederick Cooper, les « subalternistes », Stuart Ward ou encore Andrew Thompson ont déjà tracé la voie. Dans l’historiographie de la décolonisation britannique, le monde du travail n’apparaît en effet souvent qu’à l’arrière-plan, les premiers rôles étant réservés aux « grands hommes » – hommes d’État métropolitains et élites indigènes en particulier. C’est ce relatif oubli des masses laborieuses (de leur vécu, de leurs initiatives, de leurs organisations) et du rôle des « sans voix » dans la dissolution de l’Empire britannique que notre journée d’études voudrait contribuer à réparer.

L'axe de recherche « Nation et mondialisation » a notamment privilégié un programme pluridisciplinaire relatif à l’analyse des élites. D’un point de vue politologique, il concerne l’analyse comparative des représentants politiques au sein des démocraties européennes et d’autre part celle de la symbolique, appréhendée notamment du point de vue des rituels politiques. Dans une perspective davantage sociologique, il ambitionne de favoriser le développement d’études comparatives autour de la question de la distinction élitiste, y compris avec le concours d’historiens ou d’anthropologues susceptibles d’introduire, pertinemment, des dimensions temporelles et culturelles.
