L’omniprésence des images pose au chercheur la question de leur conceptualisation. Le terme recouvre une diversité d’objets menant à des définitions instables et des questionnements mouvants. Une image se définit-elle par ses frontières ? La définition d’une image varie-t-elle en fonction de son médium ? Comment les frontières de l’image visuelle sont-elles interrogées par d’autres pratiques artistiques ? Dans la mesure où les nouvelles technologies peuvent se substituer aux savoir-faire des artistes dans le traitement des matériaux – production d’effets de vraisemblance, altération des impressions visuelles captées sur un support... –, nous proposons de poursuivre le travail de redéfinition de l’art et de ses frontières, auquel nous incite cette malléabilité des images. La relation entre réel et virtuel avec les nouvelles technologies induit-elle une modification anthropologique de notre perception ?

Imagined Identities and Communities in the Late Middle Ages
On December 9 and 10 of this year, the “Cultures i Societats de l'Edat Mitjana” (CiSEM) research group, led by Dr. Antoni Furió, professor of medieval history at the University of Valencia, will hold a conference with the title: Imagined Identities and Imagined Communities in the Late Middle Ages. Far from being strictly contemporary creations, nations, the most elaborated product of imagined communities, had their relevance throughout the medieval centuries. The most recent historiography has tried to establish the mechanisms that contributed to building this type of imaginary in which, according to some anthropologists, sociologists and political scientists, collective identities are taking an increasingly prominent role in international geopolitics. For this reason, this process is presented as a great opportunity to discuss the most recent historiographical contributions, and to try to shed more light on a transcendental historical phenomenon on the evolution of human societies.

Approches historiques et perspectives actuelles
Ce colloque international et transdisciplinaire est sponsorisé par l’Union européenne dans le cadre du projet DIGITENS H2020 (H2020-MSCA-RISE 2018) et a pour objectif de s’interroger sur l’évolution des espaces de sociabilité du long dix-huitième siècle et sur leur persistance à travers les époques. L’analyse de l’interaction entre la sociabilité et l’espace ainsi que des modes de construction des espaces de sociabilité de l’époque moderne à l’époque contemporaine/actuelle permettra une relecture de l’histoire des sociétés européennes et impériales. Cette approche fournira un prisme original et diachronique, permettant une meilleure compréhension de leur héritage, dans la mesure où la sociabilité a contribué à donner un cadre aux interactions sociales des temps modernes et à redéfinir l’organisation spatiale des siècles à venir.

The body in law - doctoral workshops in the history and anthropology of law
Journées doctorales d'histoire et d'anthropologie du droit
Autorisation de la gestation pour autrui (GPA), statut des embryons congelés, réflexion sur l’euthanasie, légalisation de la prostitution, réattribution sexuelle, la question du corps est plus que jamais d’actualité pour le législateur, le juge et le justiciable. L’absence de consensus sur ces questionnements et les débats passionnés qu’entrainent toutes les problématiques liées au corps sont la conséquence directe de la difficulté à définir juridiquement ce concept. Nous allons modestement tenter de faire le point sur le statut juridique du corps. Pour ce faire, nous convierons l’Histoire du Droit, l’Anthropologie juridique, la Philosophie du droit et le droit positif. Surtout, tout au long de ces deux journées, nous nous transporterons en différents lieux et à différentes époques pour, au moyen de ce voyage temporel et spatial, tenter de dessiner une histoire et une géographie de l'appréciation du corps par le droit.

Ce colloque exceptionnel, initié par l’Association des juristes franco-britanniques (AJFB) s’est tenu à tour de rôle à Greenwich (Londres) et à Paris. Afin d’élargir les thèmes d’actualité traditionnellement abordés entre les juristes de la Marine nationale et de la Royal Navy, avec le concours de l’AJFB, les organisateurs ont souhaité cette année aborder les nouveaux défis maritimes européens, que constituent la lutte contre le terrorisme d’une part, et les conséquences du Brexit d’autre part.

Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Race and Class in Britain and America, 17th-19th centuries
This conference will question how developing discourses of race came to structure the societies of Britain and America in the early modern period. It hopes to explore the way discourses of race and class interacted with each other, and how the vocabulary of social strata overlapped with the language of race. How were the bodies and minds of the upper ranks considered to differ from those of other people during these periods? How important indeed was the idea of the physical body in rank distinction, and how did this square with the notions of pure blood that underpinned both “race” and hereditary privilege? In what ways were some groups “naturally” privileged or “naturally” excluded? Were social minorities like indigents or women marginalized or stigmatized similarly to Africans or Native Americans?

Abortion in the British Isles, France and North America (Canada, USA), 19th-21st centuries
L’année 2018 marque le cinquantenaire de l’entrée en vigueur en Grande-Bretagne de la Loi relative à l’interruption volontaire de grossesse (IVG) le 27 avril 1968 (adoptée en 1967), l’anniversaire des 45 ans, aux États-Unis, de l’arrêt de la Cour suprême Roe vs. Wade du 22 janvier 1973, ainsi que le 25e anniversaire de l’arrêt de la Cour suprême du Canada mettant fin à des conditions très restrictives d’IVG (R. v. Morgentaler). Un référendum sur l’abrogation de l’Article 8 de la Constitution de la République d’Irlande sera également organisé en 2018 et pourrait mener à une dépénalisation de l’avortement en Irlande. Par ailleurs, le parlement britannique a décidé en juillet 2017 d’autoriser les femmes en Irlande du Nord (où la Loi relative à l’IVG britannique ne s’applique pas) à procéder à une IVG sur le sol de la Grande-Bretagne et à faire prendre en charge leurs frais médicaux (ce qui n’était pas le cas jusque-là). Un état des lieux sera donc le bienvenu afin d’apprécier en France et à l’échelle internationale (Royaume-Uni, Irlande, Amérique du Nord) l’histoire et l’évolution de l’IVG.

Le colloque « San-Te », organisé dans le cadre du programme de recherche LIFE, ambitionne de contribuer à nourrir ces débats en interrogeant les enjeux complexes liés à la santé et au bien-être en milieu urbain et les manières dont ils sont pris en compte dans les politiques et l’action publiques.

The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages
Rolls were used in all aspects of medieval society. Key areas in which rolls were utilized include administration, genealogies, poetry, liturgy and heraldry. Despite the significance of the roll as a form for medieval writing culture, it has not received as much attention in respect to its significance. The international conference The Roll in Western Europe in the Late Middle Ages focuses on the materiality and the praxeology of late medieval rolls (1200 – 1500), particularly in England and France. The presentations deal with questions regarding the purpose and function of the rolls, the advantages and disadvantages of the roll form and why it was preferred for certain texts over other forms, such as the codex.

Music criticism in the Anglophone world
What are the forms, genres, and styles of music criticism? Who writes music criticism? What role have musicians and composers played (and continue to play) in music criticism? And what is the role of non-musician writers? And how do cultural institutions, such as universities, newspapers, specialized or non-specialized magazines, figure in music criticism, as opposed to non-institutional channels? What does “classical” music criticism and popular music criticism have in common? How, conversely, do they differ? These are some of the questions that will be debated in this international conference, the last in a series of colloquiums that were initiated in 2013 on various aspects of music criticism. Twelve papers—seven in English, five in French—will be presented in the three sessions of this conference, with participants from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States.

Construction, influence, evolution
The gathering organised at Ariano Irpino will examine in particular the historiographical constructions developed since the 17th century by looking at the place of the "Normans" in the "national story" of each country. It will also evaluate their influence on our knowledge of the history of the Norman worlds. What axioms have influenced the historiographical debates? Beyond their identification and classification, it is also important to understand their genealogy, their implications, their pervasiveness, their rejection and their deconstruction. The colloquium will also look to explore the orientation of a history of the Norman worlds developed from questions that go beyond national boundaries, schools and academic traditions.

Practices and images of peace in times of war (1914-1918)
Ce colloque international vise à éclairer les moments de paix, encore peu étudiés, dans le quotidien des combattants sur le front occidental (permissions, théâtre, sport, etc.). Il étudiera également la manière dont certains combattants revendiquent une « paix immédiate » ou « à tout prix » ou imaginent la paix future afin « d’empêcher à tout jamais que pareil carnage puisse se reproduire » (Le Poilu, 10 mars 1915). La pensée et l’attitude des milieux pacifistes en temps de guerre seront également discutées, ainsi que les tentatives infructueuses de paix négociée en 1917. « Paix par la victoire », « paix de compromis » ou « paix blanche », la paix constitue en effet le principal horizon d’attente des sociétés en guerre.
Le présent colloque, organisé par Stéphane Tison (Université du Maine) et Jean-Michel Guieu (Université Paris-1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) souhaite donc interroger la fonction et la place de l’imaginaire et des pratiques de la paix en temps de guerre, ce qui subsiste du temps de paix, nourrit l’espoir ou la conflictualité.

On 18 September 2014, precisely seventeen years after agreeing by a very considerable majority (74.3%) to the British Government’s proposal to set up in Edinburgh a Parliament with legislative powers in areas such as education and health care, Scottish voters said "No" by a majority of 55,3% to the question posed by the Scottish Government, namely “Should Scotland be an independent country?”
