  Summer School - History

  The "Face" of First World War Battlefields and Battles

  The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.

  For an historical anthropology of nature

  Les interrogations sur la nature et l'environnement sont aujourd'hui prégnantes. Elles s'inscrivent désormais pleinement dans les sciences sociales et historiques et invitent à une participation renouvelée des chercheurs au débat public. Ce colloque a l'ambition de nouer ensemble un questionnement historique et anthropologique sur la nature et un questionnement politique sur son devenir contemporain. L'anthropologie historique de la nature dont nous discuterons pendant une journée et demi, avec des historiens, des anthropologues, des sociologues et des historiens de l'art ne vise pas à arrêter des catégories ou à fixer une fois pour toutes les termes du débat. Il s'agit au contraire de tendre quelques lignes de force et de signaler des pistes potentiellement productives pour l’analyse.

  Ways of traveling / ways of knowing the world, 16th - 20th century (2011-2012)

  Séminaire organisé par Marie-Noëlle Bourguet et Isabelle Surun à l'université de Paris 7. Cette année, quelques séances seront communes avec le séminaire « L'épreuve des Indes. Les fabriques impériales de la modernité », organisé par Romain Bertrand et Stéphane Van Damme à Sciences po. Le séminaire est ouvert aux étudiants de master, aux doctorants, aux chercheurs intéressés. Il se tiendra cette année le lundi matin, à 10 heures (séances de 2 ou 3 h.). Sauf indication contraire, les séances ont lieu à l'Université Denis Diderot-Paris 7, UFR GHSS, Dalle des Olympiades, Tour Montréal, 59 rue Nationale, Paris 13e, salle 184.
