Ce séminaire poursuit le travail initié en 2019-2020 sur les structurations et recompositions des classes populaires dans le Japon contemporain, analysées à partir d’une enquête ethnographique de cinq ans (2012-2017) dans un quartier populaire de Tokyo. Cette année, un accent particulier sera mis sur les aspects méthodologiques de l’enquête et de sa restitution écrite ou filmique.

The ceremonial banquet - between archaeology and ethnology
International interdisciplinary study day
Les organisateurs appellent les participants à insister sur le contexte du banquet évoqué par chacun et son appréhension directe. L’évolution des pratiques sera mise en avant, si possible sur la longue durée et dans une perspective globale et comparative, ainsi que la circulation des pratiques, leurs adoptions et/ou transformations. Une attention particulière sera accordée au lieu du banquet et ses particularités (sphère publique ou privée, plein air ou intérieur, érection d’un bâtiment particulier, protection éventuelle, accès public ou non), tout comme son insertion dans la temporalité à long et court terme (cycles des cultures ou mythes cosmogoniques par exemple). Les notions de commensalité et d’hospitalité seront également mises en avant, de même que la place des convives et les questions de pouvoir et de hiérarchie, les ingrédients particuliers de ces repas (mets d’exception, boissons fermentées ou alcoolisées), ainsi que les matériaux utilisés (vaisselle, couverts éventuels, utilisation des mains, récipients, chaudrons, matériaux minéraux ou végétaux, etc.).

New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

The French Association into South-East Asia research (Afrase)
Les rencontres de l'Association française pour la recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est (Afrase) 2020 proposent de partager des histoires de familles en Asie du Sud-Est et de s'interroger sur la relation entre récits de soi et récits de parenté, Quelle que soit la nature de la famille alors considérée, famille réelle, étendue, reconstruite ou imaginée. Cet appel concerne tous ceux qui voudraient partager une réflexion sur ces récits, particulièrement sur les formes de ces histoires, leur conservation et leur transmission. Tous les supports de ces récits de famille sont mis à l'honneur, qu'il s'agisse de récits oraux, de textes, de dessins, de photographies ou de films. La question du dialogue au sein des groupes de parenté en Asie du Sud-Est et entre l'Asie et le monde est mise à l'honneur à travers les thèmes de la communication, notamment dans le cadre des réseaux sociaux.

Archaeology and the history taste in Phoenician and Punic societies
Cette école thématique s’inscrit dans le programme de recherche et formation « Archéologie du goût en Méditerranée occidentale dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique ». Elle constitue la première action du programme et fixera les termes, les contours et les enjeux du débat. Pour cela, nous nous interrogerons sur la question du goût dans les sociétés phénicienne et punique, en nous limitant à deux aspects majeurs que sont : le goût comme construction culturelle ; les goûts et les habitudes alimentaires. Ces thèmes seront analysés à travers une approche pluridisciplinaire et comparatiste qui dépasse les frontières entre chronologie, disciplines et cultures différentes. L’objectif de l’École thématique est de croiser les approches disciplinaires, les terrains de recherches, les périodes et les corpus de sources afin de proposer aux jeunes participants une ouverture méthodologique et scientifique autour d’une thématique commune d’étude, et d’en explorer toute la richesse.

L’originalité de ce dossier thématique de la revue Communication (Revue du département d’information et de communication de l’Université Laval), réside dans le choix du sujet principal centré sur l’espace public dans les pays arabophones (autant du Maghreb que d’ailleurs dans le monde) et africains subsahariens. Il s’agit d’un sujet peu étudié par la littérature scientifique en sciences de la communication. Les objectifs du présent appel à articles sont d’interroger la pertinence du concept d’espace public à la lumière des travaux critiques, de privilégier des travaux empiriques ancrés dans des terrains spécifiques (les pays arabophones et africains subsahariens) et de faire émerger de nouveaux objets de recherche ou de nouvelles propositions théoriques. Ce dossier permettra ainsi d’apporter une contribution susceptible d’intéresser les chercheurs travaillant sur les problématiques relatives à l’espace public en sciences humaines et sociales et en sciences de la communication en particulier.

Identities, resistance, horizons (Africa, Asia, America, 19th-21st centuries)
Cette journée d’étude a pour ambition de revenir sur la subjectivation de l’expérience comme soubassement de la preuve et de reconsidérer dans son processus, sa possible charge émancipatoire. En nous fondant sur l’expérience vécue comme accès à un rapport de soi, nous souhaitons réinterroger le caractère construit de l’expérience, la manière pour chacun de structurer la position de « l’autre » face à soi-même. Dans cette confrontation avec l’inconnu s’impose un dialogue de la « résistance » et de « l’émancipation » qui, sous la forme de la subjectivité, se retrouve inséré dans des narrations institutionnelles. Il s’agira ainsi de se garder de l’évidence de l’expérience afin d’interroger les modalités mêmes de son élaboration.

Cette journée portera sur la construction de l’altérité et se propose d’interroger la façon dont se donne à voir l’image de soi et de l’autre —question volontairement large et transdisciplinaire. Convaincus par l’intérêt de l’interdisciplinarité, l’objectif est double. Tout d’abord permettre la création d’un premier espace de dialogue scientifique afin de confronter nos pratiques de jeunes chercheurs, mais également opérer une première mise en relief d’objets de recherche bien souvent construits et discutés en un cadre restreint.

Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East
Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age
The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

Dans toute l’histoire de l’humanité, il y eut des groupes et des individus exceptionnels, élites ou parias, admirés ou méprisés, remarquables et remarqués, doués et maîtrisant un savoir particulier ou simplement à l’écart des groupes sociaux majoritaires. Cette mise en relief ou à l’écart peut être simplement question de personnalité individuelle, et peut aussi provenir du statut et de la morphologie sociale, de circonstances historiques, de circonstances religieuses et symboliques, de circonstances politiques, de circonstances sociales, culturelles et économiques, ou bien de rapports interculturels hiérarchisés. Le sujet est si riche qu’il ne saurait être couvert en l’espace des huit séances du séminaire, aussi faut-il considérer le thème de cette année comme une simple introduction à un ensemble complexe qu’il conviendra d’approfondir par la suite, notamment dans le cadre de futures sessions de ce séminaire.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe
Since the start of the 21st century seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

Theme issue of the journal Études arméniennes contemporaines (EAC n° 8 – Decembre 2017)
The history of the large-scale massacres committed against the Armenians under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, in 1894-1896, is still largely unknown, its sources underutilized or not studied at all. This period of extreme violence, a watershed in the political and social history of the Ottoman Empire, raises many questions about the similarities and differences with the genocidal process of 1915-1916. We invite submissions on a broad range of topics and disciplinary approaches for this special issue. Relevant studies may include chronological analyses of the events of the 1890s themselves, as well as analyses of the consequences of that era of violence up to the present day. At the heart of this issue lies the question of the precedent: what links can be established between the genocide and the mass crimes that preceded it – an issue relevant to the study of other twentieth-century genocides.
